Northampton wasn't a top ten inclusion, and Provincetown was actually mired
in the bottom ten! Oh, what the hell? Here are the Top Ten Cities for
Lesbians, according to Girlfriends magazine:
1) Austin, TX
2) Tampa, FL
3) Atlanta, GA
4) Kansas City, MO
5) Philadelphia, PA
6) Baltimore, MD
7) Columbia, SC
8) Columbus, OH
9) Buffalo, NY
10) Houston, TX

Subject: 10 worst, World AIDS Day
Regarding the best cities in the U.S. for lesbians, the worst cities,
according to "The Wisconsin Light" newspaper, which lists Girlfriends
magazine as its source are:
Laguna Beach, CA
Oak Park, IL
Jackson, MS
Charlottesville, VA
P-Town, MA
Mobile, AL
Asbury Park, NJ
Stamford, CN
Aspen, CO
Urbana, IL
I think I took notice of these primarily because my hometown, Mobile AL,
is among the ten worst. Having lived there for 18 of my 19 years, I can
vouch for this one.
Home of "America's Junior Miss," the "Azalea Trail Maids" (you saw them
in the Macy's Day Parade- the ones in huge lacy pastel Southern Belle
dresses) and the "good woman" (i.e. one who stays home with the kids and
cooks steak and potatoes for her "man"), Mobile is *not* a friendly place
for wimmin to be "un-ladylike."
So where did I move? Ashland, WI- home of the Jaime Nabozny case...
Perhaps you heard of it- while in school at Ashland High School (or was
it Middle School??) Jaime, a gay man, was beat up, urinated on, and
mock-raped multiple times by his male classmates. When he went to the
administrators, they told him and his family that since he was gay, he
would have to expect that, because "Boys will be boys."
Jaime just settled the case out of court, receiving 900,000 dollars in
compensation.
I'm not having much luck finding queer-friendly cities.

Today (December 1) is World AIDS Day. As you go about your way, remember
that approximately six people in the world are infected with HIV every
minute.* Think of it in these terms- in the twenty minutes it takes to
read your daily Melissa Etheridge Mailing List Digest, 120 people around
the world have been infected by HIV. Try to think of the names of 120
people you love or are close to... then try to imagine how you would feel
if even one of these people became infected with HIV. Unfortunately, many
of us on the list already know how that feels.
Today, remember someone who has died with AIDS. Then go celebrate life
with someone who is living with HIV/AIDS. Mother Jones (1830-1930, United
Mine Worker and labor organiser) once said, "Pray for the dead and fight
like hell for the living." One of the best ways to fight like hell is to
educate. Help be a cure for HIV/AIDS. Learn all that you can about
HIV/AIDS, then tell someone else.

Hello everybody,
Today I feel like many people feel I think.
It's world aids day (1st of december) and it's an important day.
Let's stick together in the battle against aids.
Remember all the people who suffer from aids or being HIV infected!
Let's remember the people who died of aids in the past also!
I think it's good we have a day like today on wich we can actually
show together that we think about you!
I got a package from a listmember with Queen tapes I requested and
ironically enough I got them Yesterday.
We will never forget you, Freddy!

I don't know how I can explain my feelings but I hope nobody is angry I

Here are the lyrics for "The Letter U" that Melissa did for Sesame Street:
Is it so hard
To Understand I love U
'Cause no other letter
Looks and sounds like U do
Oh I love your "uh" sound
And have I ever told U
That I'd be Upset
If U left the alphabet
That's why I hold U
Hold U
Like I do
U stand for Understanding
For Up and Undemanding
And you stand for Underwear
For Ugly and Unfair
And I don't know any letter
Who makes the "uh" sound better
Than the letter U
I love the "uh" sound
Of the letter U
Ooh and I want the "uh" sound
Of the letter U
Oh I need the "uh" sound
Of the letter U
That's why I ache
That's why I ache
I ache
Oh I ache
Just to hold U
Hold U
Like I do
No one else begins Uptown
No one starts off Upside-down
No one else begins Unable,
Uncertain or Unstable
No one else can spell a
A neat word like Umbrella
Like the way U do
Like the way U do
Nobody makes the "uh" sound
Like the way U do
Oh gimme that "uh" sound
C'mon
Like the way U do
Like the way U do

Couple of amusing notes from my Turkey-day travels... I was driving in
lower Michigan (I think I was going north on M-60 in the vicinity of
Cassopolis, if anybody cares) and did a double take when I saw this *HUGE*
sign that said MLE in big letters. Then I noticed that below the MLE it
said "Michigan Livestock Exchange." Hee!
I was lucky enough to go to Windham Hill's "Winter Solstice Concert" in
Kalamazoo, Michigan over the weekend. Tuck & Patti did one song which was
introduced as being written by 4 people (including Jim Carrey[sp?], the
actor, who evidently is also a songwriter) and one of the names mentioned
was John Shanks. Anybody know for sure if this is the same John Shanks?
The song is on the one Tuck & Patti CD I don't have, I guess, so I don't
know the title for sure-- might be something like "Let's Bring Heaven Down
Here." Very nice song.
Totally NMEC, Mom and I were in a consignment shop (her big hobby-- she
loves going to consignment shops & thrift shops) and I found, of all
things, a pair of black leather pants. In more or less my size (which is
pretty amazing since I'm 5'1" and rather not skinny). For $7.50. Yes, they
came home with me. Where in the world I will ever *wear* black leather
pants, I have absolutely no idea-- I told Mom the only occasion I could
imagine wearing them was to a Melissa concert and she won't be back here
for quite a while!
I hope everyone who may have been traveling this weekend arrives where
they're going safe and sound.

depends on what week you are visting and the experience. I seen many people

that just won't stop having fun!!
As for the other places on the list, I really con't say. I been through
Stamford and didn't really notice. As for Asbury Park, there isn't a hell of
alot going on there anyway except Bruce Springsteen doing benefits to help
urban growth in the city. The motels and hotels along the beach are deserted
and abandoned. And the downtown strip is just as bad! It is ashame to desert
a beach resort that has had its heyday.

Hey all...
Thought I'd delurk for a moment ...
I agree with Francie...that P-town is a very welcoming place for lesbians and
lesbian owned businesses. It has always been my experience while enjoying
the "element" that the town is a very lesbian friendly zone!! I also agree
that it is more so during certain times of the year...like womens week...for
example. A very FUN place indeed...very quaint...very artistic...and JUST
RIGHT! If anyone wants to spend time in P-town and wants a really NICE
place to stay...the White Horse Inn on Commercial Street is the perfect
place. They have "suites" there that are like little apartments that have
separate entrances... the "rents" are relatively cheap ...and its just
wonderful with its view of the ocean. Anyway...its MY favorite place and hopefully it will become
one of yours too.
As for the other places on the list, I too have been throughStamford (while
living in NY state) and did notice that many of the people I came in contact
with were a bit on the homophobic side. Hartford, on the other hand was quite
the opposite. As for Asbury Park, (NJ) I agree, there isn't a hell of alot
going on there. Bruce Springsteen used to hang at the STONE PONY ... BUT
there was a bar right across the street called THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT that
was frequented by many more lesbians than the town of Asbury park could
handle!! The place was a real rat trap...a true dive! Not many good words
to say about the place except it was a place in NJ to go! Don't know whether
it still exists or not. By now, it should have been condemned! But
anyway...it was a bit frightening to go there knowing of the incidents of
bashing that occurred there (just outside the bar or in the parking area
between the Stone Pony and the Owl)...most unreported. The place used to be
nicknamed "the death bar"...for one reason or another....none of which were
amusing.
Anyway...just my words of experience...don't know much about the other towns
listed...but heard on one of Melissa's bootleged tapes of the Biloxi Concert
('94 ?) that there were an awful lot of non-homophobic Melissa followers from
Mobile Alabama. What can I say...eh??
Take care all...hope your Thanksgiving Day was filled with love and
stuffing!!

Subject: Houston concert
It has taken me almost two weeks to come down off of my cloud after seeing
Melissa, and all I can say is...Y-E-E-H-A-W ! ! ! (That was *just* for you
Renee, even tho we don't say that here in Texas...but I'm not originally
*from* Texas ;-) ). Anyway, what an amazing performance! Here's how it
went, from my POV, at the Houston show.
Laurel valet parked at The Summit, and she and Angela were escorted through
the back stage where Melissa's dressing room was, and where the crew had
just finished eating. This was because Angela just had knee surgery, and
had to hobble on crutches, so she got a little VIP treatment. ;-) So...we
arrived, donning our purple shirts, and began to scan the crowd.
We had 7th row center floor seats, obtained with a little luck from TM.
But, I pretty much abandoned our little group right from the start, and
bolted to the front to meet some other listers...Diane and Karen, (wearing
purple shirts), Dan, Loretta, and some other people who did the Texas tour.
As the lights went out, I happened to be standing in the first row as ME
came onto the stage. I was paralyzed, and knew that I would *never* make it
back to the 7th row. (No, 7th row was just *not* good enough for me!!
) Then, after the first two songs, someone came over to claim their
seat, so I merely moved to the center aisle, about two rows back. Security
didn't seem to have much of a problem with this, (as long as I didn't block
the aisle), so, I stayed there for the rest of the set at the main stage.
Oh, I was directly in line from Melissa when she did her *thing* with the
guitar during SL. Woohooo!!!
Fashion report...black leather pants, silver shiny shirt with black swirls,
over a black t-shirt. On this night in Texas, Melissa had on her black Dr.
Martens. Guess she didn't expect to be wearing a cowboy hat during SP, that
someone had thrown on stage, or she may have decided to go with the cowboy
boots, like she did in Austin and Dallas. (She even acquired somewhat of a
Texas accent with that hat on, but she never said, "yeehaw," once...imagine
that ;-) ).
When ICHBY began to play, I made my way back to the small stage, only to
find that it was pretty crowded. I got close enough, (maybe about 15 feet
away from her mic stand), to see Melissa's *dental* work during NS, AAG,
and ATWTH. (She did not do AIH or YIA). The other two songs, (Resist and
LMG), she sang from the other side of the stage.
While at the small stage, I tried *really* hard to get a pick...I even
brought my own, and asked John to trade me for one of his. He looked at me
and just smiled, but I think he was a little pre-occupied watching this
girl, close by, unbuttoning her shirt. He gave away 5 picks,
but I didn't get one. I missed getting Kenny's drum stick
by five people away, and Melissa's pick by three people away. AARRRGGHH!!!
(Way to go Patti, on getting Melissa's pick in
Austin.)
At this point, I went over to row 7 to say a quick hello to everyone, then
continued on to the front. I decided to stand behind the first row of
chairs, dead center, in line with Melissa's mic. The crowd had already
moved to the stage, but I decided that the view from here was *much* better
than standing squashed up to the stage. I was in heaven. I stood on my
chair a couple of times to turn around to see Laurel, Ang, Terri, and
Jonti. Then, as I stood on my chair alone...(the rest of the crowd on the
floor), Melissa looked *right* at me, giving the peace sign, and sang the
line..."This war is over, I'm coming home." Angie nearly fell over, when
she saw Melissa singing to me! It was pretty cool.
I didn't get to shake her hand, because there were too many people crunched
up there. The girl who had unbuttoned her shirt earlier, was now trying to
climb onto the stage in nothing but her bra...(I think she threw her shirt
on the stage). She grabbed Melissa's leg, and then security pulled her off.
Melissa didn't miss a beat, tho.
The show ended, and the crowd dispersed. We hung around the stage for
awhile, and I was determined to get something ... maybe hoping to find a
set list. Instead, I was handed one of Melissa's cups of water, (off of the
drum platform), that she had been drinking from. I guess they heard how we
*love* our water here in Houston ;-) . I
passed the cup around to our group, and we all had a sip. One of the guys
in the crew also handed me a pick...one of those with Melissa's sig on one
side, and the logo on the other. I was happy now.
So, that is my story. We left via the backstage door, past the dressing
room, hoping to see anyone from the band, but, no such luck. Now, I wish
that I had made it to the other Texas concerts...or at least to Dallas,
because I heard that that was the best of the three Texas shows. Guess
it'll be a looong time until we experience one of her live performances
again. Oh well, I'll just keep replaying it over and over in my mind.
:-)))))) Okay, back to lurkdom.
(Hey Diane, did you get any good pictures?? How about a trade?
Or Patti?? E-mail me).

Hey folks!
As i read the entries regarding past concerts i've noticed that no one has
mentioned anything about Mel's concert in El Paso last week. Could it be
that there's no on this list from the tip of Texas?
It goes without saying that Melissa rocked--for three hours! It was a
great intimate concert with all 3,000 of us screaming fans. The kicker was
when she sang the last few verses of "Nowhere to go" in what she dubbed a
"world premier" in Spanish. She drove the crowd wild. i for one had no
idea she had released that particular song in Spanish--needless to say i'm
going to run out and buy as soon as some cash flow comes in.
That's it for my concert report from "Out in the west Texas town of El

Well, since she sang the words to the letter U to the tune of LTWID,
perhaps it would work better to show the signs/lit words/whatever, while
and or after she does LTWID. It is her first encore, usually sung afte
YLS. I wonder what she would think if she came out on stage (in a
darkened arena, of course) with that sign glowing in the dark.
I think it might just catch her attention...

Subject: LAst show/Necklaces::Update #2
Hey All!
There have been several wonderful suggestions made about how to pull off
our gift to Melissa at the last concert.
Several folks have pointed out that ATWTH is performed at the small stage
and thus, it might not be the most opportune time to try to reveal the
letters. Instead, presenting the letters, as SueD (who will *be there*)
mightily put it:
"in the darkened arena, as she comes on to do the encore of LTWID
(fits in nicely with the "U" punning)...it just might catch her
attention!"
Can you picture it???? I can!!!
Thanks also to the bunches of you who also suggested to present the
message sometime during LTWID. Seems like the plan!!!!!!!
Also, those of you who indicated that you will be there, I will put you in
touch with SueD so we can start solidifying logisitics!
-=-=-=-=-
As far as news on the necklaces...
SueD also pointed out that the necklaces have to be "cracked" to light up
and that this might be difficult to do if the letters are preassembled.
I agree that this might be a problem depending upon the size of the
letters. If they are not too big, the person in each section in charge of
the letter might have enough time to do it before the band returns to
encore. Sue's *other* suggestion, however, might be even more fitting..
Why not try to spell out the letters in battery-operated Xmas lights
(I did not even know these existed but given the Season, I might have more
luck finding them than I have so for the GITD Necklaces =}
I think it is a great idea. And also, when I first pictured it, I
imagined getting the letters pretty big so that we could display them
around the arena at about 1st-tier level...but perhaps, in the interest of
time and moolah, we might keep the letters to a manageable size and try to
display them relatively close to the stage (all those Travel Package &
MEIN folks, are you up for something like this?)
Anyways, Sue has graciously offered to hunt her area for those battery
operated lights...I will do the same here, although they can be assembled
anywhere just as long as they wind up front and center => Those of you
who offered to be sponsors, please hang in there and between me and Sue,
we'll let you know what the next step is!
Cheers Listers!
Thanks to everyone who loves her LTWID!!!!!
More soon,

I don`t know if John wrote this song but he writes many and so I would guess
that this is the same John Shanks.
Once he told me a very neat storry from the Woodstock Festival. He wrote that
song for Joe Cocker and Cocker put it on one of his CD`s and when he ran into
Joe`s manager during the festival he talked to him and asked him what Cocker
thought of his song. The manager was like: "uhh, you are John Shanks, you
must meet Joe !!" John told me that he was so excited when this guy "pulled"
him to Joe Cockers dressing room. Joe must have been very nice and happy to
meet John and be able to thank him in person for his job on that song.
He told John that he was going to play that song during his show and if he
would like to be next to the stage when he performs.
It must have been a great moment for John because Joe Cocker pulled him onto
the stage while he and his band played the song John wrote.
John said that he had in this moment tears in his eyes while he stood right
next to the singing Joe Cocker, infront of this huge audience.
This song is on one of Cocker`s albums but I don`t remember the name.
We still need the adress of a Lister who is willing to help for the LA-show.
Bye, bye

Hi Patty,
>>2 . What CD single has Melissa singing with Brian Adams?
I don't know what's gone wrong with my first mail. So once again.
The new CD of Brian Adams called STAR. There are 4 tracks on it.
"Its only love" is the song with Melissa.
The CD is from A&G Records /582027-2/LC0485.
So buy and enjoy it :-)
Special thanks to Kiva who has given me the courage to write my first mail

I hope so..) to this wonderful list. I always need a little kick to do

So that`s enough for today. Back to translate the DIGEST.

Subject: MLE in Albuquerque
I haven't seen any concert reviews of the albuquerque show, but I didn't
go through my digests thoroughly, so my apologies if the following is
redundant. It's a little long, so feel free to skip it.
She came out and sang a song (can't remember which)...oh yeah,
the one with the mango line. Then she mentioned how it was a special
night (being that it was Thanksgiving Eve) and that it felt more like a
Friday night than a Wednesday night...probably because nobody worked the
following day...unless you work at a 7-Eleven...then she apologized to
those who fell into that category.
Then she told the crowd about how she was talking to a local DJ
before the show and that he went to school with her, and he brought his
old yearbook for her to sign. She went on and on, and was telling Shanks
that even he hasn't seen that picture (9th grade, I think), so he asked the
guy (his name was Mark) to come up to the stage, if he could, and bring
up the yearbook. Seconds later, he brings the yearbook to her, and she
shows Shanks, and he starts cracking up. The camera guys got a close-up
of the picture, so the whole crowd could see it too. (She's gotten MUCH
better looking). Here's my favorite part: She mentioned that she had
signed his yearbook(back then) with some cheesey line and how she remembered having a crush on him, and then she
said that maybe he had something to do with how she is now!
That cracked my ass up!!
Let's see....what else...oh, she said "okay...true story..." then
proceeded to tell the crowd how she remembered Albuquerque from way back
then when she was headed for LA from Leavenworth. One of her stops was
in ABQ, and that she asked where she could find a happening club, and
when she got there, it just wasn't the kind of club she had in mind, and
a lady bartender went up to her and said "you don't look like you want to
be here...let me tell you where you want to be" After the crowd stops
yelling and screaming from the goofy grin she had on her face, she said
that she was given directions to go down some road until you see a
place with no signs...just a blue light over the door. Crowd goes wild
again, and she says "So you see, Albuquerque, I remember you guys all the
time when I'm writing" I personally didn't believe her. How many other
cities has she told that story to? She also mentioned the restaurant
behind the bowling alley where they served the best Mexican food.
She sang the last verse of Nowhere to Go in Spanish, as she did
at the Las Cruces show. She did a good job..I was impressed.
I think that's about it as far as her in-between-songs chatting
goes. I did happen to obtain a Melissa pick. I haven't seen anyone
mention this one, but the one I have has Melissa written on one side, but
it's in kids' writing, and the E is backwards, and on the other side is a
stork with his wings spread with a package in his beak. Perhaps on his
way to deliver a baby. ;) Wanna know how I got the pick?
See, what happened was, I flashed her my breasts whilst at the
front of the stage, and she was so stunned because surely she's never seen
anything like them, that she dropped her pick (dropped her guitar too,
but I couldn't snatch that one), fell over backwards, and took a
30-minute intermission so as to gain composure once again.
Okay, so maybe the last paragraph was a figment of my
imagination, but everything beforehand is true from what I can remember.
Unfortunately, she didn't have any ME Turkeys for sale, but a good time
was had regardless.

Subject: LEGENDS: Janis Joplin (NMEC)
Hi All,
Well the VH-1 "Legends" series kicked off
with a show about Janis Joplin, narrated by
Kris Kristoferson.
Besides the narration by Kristoferson, Janis'
sister Laura read from letters by Janis which
was kind of interesting. These were some of
the same letters from which she wrote her book.
Many of the clips were from the film, "Janis"
and no song was sung completely through
which was disappointing. But I did enjoy the
clips from that Railroad Tour with the Grateful
Dead and others across Canada.
There were alot of still photos and a few sound
clips but nothing extraordinary and much was stuff
I had seen before. Although nicely put together it
just made me wonder what VH-1 could really find
if they dug deeper into that archive of theirs. I've
always wanted to see that German TV concert
she did in 1970.
Anyway, between this show and the three "Archive"
shows VH-1 aired of her with Dick Cavett before, I'm
quite happy to have filled up almost two hours of
commercial-free Janis video.
Thank You VH-1!!!!!

All these lefties stories are getting to me-so I will share my own 'lefty'
story. Apparently I was born left handed or was developing lefthandedness as
a preschooler. My parents both
insisted that I not use my left hand. I didn't understand why- I thought
that they considered my left hand to be something bad. (I was glad they
did ignore me using my left foot.) Anyway, their strategy worked and by
kindergarten I was right handed.
Learning to print & write was very difficult and my handwriting was very
messy. It never seemed to occur to the adults that the reason I was having
so much difficulty was because they had made me change hands.
My younger sibblings had it easier. They only tried to influence my
brother by putting everything in his right hand- he dutifully held things in
his right hand but only used what was in his left hand. By the time my
youngest sisters were born my parents had made a complete turn around and
were excited to have another one be left-handed!
I still write and do most tasks right-handed and I have been thinking about
what might happen if I were to change back. Would I be able to maybe draw
like my sister, or just feel better? Could I even really change back as an
adult? Have any of you other ex-lefties thought of changing back?

Although I have actually never visited P-Town, I've heard that it's very
gay *and* lesbian-friendly, cozy and cushy. Ignore that Advocate article,
I say! :-) As for Northampton, I was totally shocked that it wasn't
included in the Top Ten!! I think it landed around #25 or so, where
Seattle happened to be (which I mention 'cause I live there!). It is an
absolutely great town. My only complaint, so to speak, is that it's not
located near water. Nevertheless, it's a niche that really embraces its
lesbians and all broad-minded, educated people!
Also, any town that bottomed out wasn't necessarily "bad." There wasn't
any criteria cited for the list, but for some reason I didn't assume that
those towns were "unlivable" in any way. They had just toppled from
previous glory. . .perhaps the lesbian population had plummeted?

The place we are going is Billy McHales. It's close to I-5, easy to find &
not too far from Tacoma. They also have great food & drinks. We had 20 people
for a pre-concert party last week & it was great. They can set up tables for
a large party if needed & it's just a quick ride down the freeway to the
concert. If you plan to attend, please e-mail me privately & let me know how
many people you will be bringing. We want to have plenty of seats. I can also
provide directions for anyone not familiar with the place. I know some people
might have to work that day but I'd advise getting there around 4:30-5:00. I
know people will be anxious to get down to the T-Dome early to find out what
the MEIN ticket lottery has in store for them. Did I mention this place has
31 different kinds or margaritas? :) Hope to see many of you before the show!

Subject: NMEC: Ptown, rating of towns
A friend of mine sent me that list from Girlfriends magazine. All I can
say is WHAT A CROCK!
My girlfriend noted that the only criteria must have been cost of living
since the top towns all had average apartment rentals at $400.
Ptown is VERY much a lesbian town. I absolutely love it there. I found
it to be very much a mix of women and men--far more so than Key West,
which was way more male oriented. (Btw, thanks to everyone who sent me
info on Key West; we had an **excellent** vacation there!)
Btw, my girlfriend (also a list member) lives in Stamford, CT, which was
rated *very* low on the Girlfriends list. Again, that can only be
because of cost of living. While there isn't much of a gay community
there, there are some things in the Stamford area, including Westchester
County, NY and NYC itself--less than an hour away.

Okay, I held off long enough on this thread...
While in 1st grade learning to write, I couldn't see where I was
writing with my right hand. I would write off the line, a little
slanted. I thought, "golly, I wish I could see where I'm going. I
bet if I use my left hand...." You guessed it, I'm a
righty-turned-lefty, MY CHOICE!!! My mother is the opposite, going
through Catholic schools as others has reported.
I write and eat left handed (although, for anyone who has seen my
handwriting can attest, I don't write very clearly, all Fs in
Handwriting on my report cards). I play softball right handed.
Tennis, I'm right handed but Ping-Pong, I'm lefty. Basketball, I'm
ambidextrous (but not very good anymore because neither hand can
decide which is the dominant and therefore they fight each other in
directing the ball to the hoop).
That's my story, go figure!

I to am new to this list. I just started receiving it 3 days ago. I have
been a Melissa fan since the very first time I heard "Bring Me Some Water"
on my way home to Wisconsin from Michigan when it first started getting play
on the airwaves. I ran right out and bought the CD.
I have found many of the comments in this mailing list very interesting in
the short time I have been reading it, and maybe someone out there can
answer a few questions I have. I thought I saw somewhere on a Melissa web
page "ThunderRoad" mentioned. I would like to know if Melissa has ever done
his song, and if so, is it the same song as my all-time favorite by Bruce
Springsteen?
Likewise, I have heard she does "Maggie-May", is this correct? I find it
such an odd coincidence that these two songs are probably two of my top five
favorite songs of all time. [I am a quadraplegic and use voice recognition
software-I named my computer "Maggie"-so to activate her I have to say "wake
up Maggie"]
I have been attending concerts since 1974. The first one was BTO & Bob
Seger (before his Beautiful Loser album), and I must say that Melissa puts
on one of the best shows I've ever seen. I've seen her twice-1994 at the
Weidner Center in Green Bay, and this last October 1st at the Brown County
Arena in Green Bay. Both shows were excellent. What scares me though, is
this past concert was only about half sold-out. So if by chance you are out
there reading this, Melissa, we want you back in Green Bay.
Anyone know when a new album is due?
Thanks for your responses in advance.

Subject: Review - Salt Lake City concert!
Hello Mel-Fans!
I thought a long time about writing this review to you or not. But I
really want to tell you a little bit about the Salt Lake City concert
from a European point of view. I know a lot of you won't agree with
everything, but it was the experience I made and maybe just the Utah
crowd (mormons) is kind of shy :) Anyway, let's start:
I am originally from Austria and have seen her 3 times before (2
times Germany and 1 time Austria). Every of those concerts were
BRILLIANT and because of that I had HIGH expectations to see Mel
performing in her own country.
It was not a sold out concert, but I guess, there were about 4.000
people there. I had right center, 7th row. The audience was packed
with women, of course. She started with "I really like you" and right
after that song I knew, that this was the LAZIEST audience I've ever
seen. It seems that the Americans "don't know" how to clap their
hands or know the lyrics of the songs. Instead they prefer to sit
(!!), drink their beer and eat popcorn. I was really disappointed -
so was Mel. She really tried her best and played even with extra
enthusiasm. It started to get better at "Bring me some water", which
was way too late.
I was also a little bit disappointed in Mel herself. Her voice was o.
k. (if you think how many concerts she is playing), but I tried to
meet her before the concert (I was the only one there) and the
security was really strict. Fortunately enough I handed a picture to
the tour mananger and after the concert I got it back - signed
especially for me. There was also one scene, were Mel acted like one
of those "Out of Reach" and "Mega-Stars". It was right after she came
back from her second stage. She took the way between the right center
and the side rows, which was quite wide. Also the security used some
rope to make it safer for her. Well, I thought that's my chance to
touch her hand or JUST to look at her. Wrong! There were bodyguards
in front, beside and behind her and she had a black blanket over her
head. It looked so ridiculous that I just could .... smile.
Result: It was a nice evening but not more. Kenny was really
impressive. Good job.
Take care,
Angie

Subject: El Paso is in TEXAS!
Looks like i'm going to have to take matters into my own hands! i let it
slide a week ago when i was at the concert here in El Paso, *TX* but then
i get on this list and read that our friend from Albq. NM thinks that Mel
was in Las Cruces! Granted, Las Cruces, NM is about a 45 min. drive from
El Paso, but it's not in Texas--it's in New Mexico--two totally different
states!
i'll have you know that some people were so offened that the concert
t-shirts said El Paso, NM that they didn't buy them. The promoters of the
tour should have double checked their geographic locations. It may not
seem like a big deal to you, but when you get passed over time and time
again, it starts to insult people more than upset them.
Melissa did mention however, that when she was last in El Paso (`89) she
bought herself the best pair of boots she ever owned (El Paso is popular
for our boots) and she wore them everywhere. Then after a concert in
Dublin, Ireland, she left them behind!
The confusion between Las Cruces and El Paso is understandable. Melissa
was in Las Cruces two years ago-so we didn't have to wait that long. No
one seems to understand that when a concert comes to El Paso or Las Cruces
that they are in fact two different locations. In fact, El Pasoans pack
Las Cruces concerts--we're twice as big than the small city of Las Cruces.
Oh well. That's all the steam i have to blow off. Thanks for reading my
rambling.
Ciao!

It's been quite awhile since I've done this, but I believe this is how:
use: [ -b +- square_root(b^2-4ac) ] / 2a
for an equation that is written in the form of
ax^2 + bx + c = 0
So, x^2 - 6x + 21 = 0 --> a=1, b=-6, c=21
Plug these into the above formula, and you get:
3 +- 2*square_root(-3)
a +- b*i
I forget how to write square_root(-3) in terms of i... is it "3i" ??
Hope this helps.

Anybody out there a photographer??
I took about 20 pictures at the Memphis show of Melissa and the band with
a (f*****' cheap) disposable camera--when I got my pictures back from
development, there were only 2 pictures of the concert in the envelope...
on 1, it was just about pitch black... and the other was fine, but so far
away... probably one of the first pictures I took (being nervous with the
camera and all). Wondering where the other pictures were, I looked at my
negatives--ALL OF THEM WERE COMPLETELY TRANSPARENT!! Does anybody know
if this was due to a faulty disposable camera, or what exactly the reason
is why one concert picture came out fine, but all the rest didn't even
take??
Sorry to those who wanted pictures of that concert--I would've been more
than glad to make copies and send 'em out to ya, but believe me--> nobody
is as upset as me who thought she had a couple dozen pics of the greatest

sounds like a faulty camera. the transparent exposures (is there absolutely
noth9ng there) are unexposed. teh one that is pitch back would be where it
got stock. souinds like somehow the film wasnt connect to the
sprockets well and never advanced when you turned the little advance
wheel. though, disposables would probably not have *great* results
anyway since they have a little plastic lens and the flash will only
cover maybe 20 feet. transparent negs suggest unexposed film so it
sounds like a camera problem.

As mentioned before, Mel rocked for close to three hours (here in El Paso)
on a Tuesday night. i for one had to go to class the next day (and take a
test at that!) but i stayed till those house lights came back on--and so
did most of those 3,000 people.
We had some pretty lame people at the show, but now i'm finding that it
happens at some other concerts too. however, _no one_ on the floor sat
down for a moment. i have to admit, i was a bit tired and sat through a
couple of songs, but my lover danced enough for both of us! It's a drag
when people don't know how to behave properly at a concert.
As for those of you still counting the days to see her and each other--all
i can say is have fun and i wish i could be part of the festivities.

The current issue of the Las Vegas Bugle (a local 'lesbian and gay news'
paper) provides the following description of Melissa's 'Las Vegas' show:
Melissa at Buffalo Bill's Star of the Desert Arena, Dec 10, 7:30pm
Buffalo Bills Resort and Casino is located 35 minutes south of Las Vegas
at Primm Nevada, off interstate 15, at the Nevada/California border.

Like several other people on this list, I discovered Joan Osborne through
her DUETS performance with Melissa, and I have spent months searching for
her early work on the 'Womanly Hips' and 'Blue Gorilla' labels, without
success... until now... Joan has re-released her early work on Mercury,
entitled 'Joan Osborne: Early Recordings'. These songs are mostly live
performances in a New York club called Delta 88, and most of the songs
are her own work, though she *does* perform an interesting cover of a
Captain Beefheart(!) tune.
----
Several new list-members have asked for copies of various Melissa videos,
including Storytellers, DUETS, Sesame Street, etc... *after* the year-end
holidays (sometime in early January) I will announce to the list another
Melissa video compilation, similar to Elise's two-tape compilation from
last year... this idea was suggested to me by Joyce Luck, and she has
offered to provide me with some of the material for this new compilation.
It will include Storytellers, Sesame Street (Joyce, I finally got to see
it on local TV and I now have a great master copy), DUETS, and thanks to
a wonderful Canadian list-member I will also include the great MuchMusic
two-part Melissa presentation (one of the best Melissa compilations I've
ever seen)... plus some other material I have in my collection... her 1988
Letterman debut, her appearance with Julie on Rosie O'Donnell's Stand-Up
Spotlight, and more.
Later this month I will post a complete list of the proposed compilation.
And for those who missed Elise's compilation last year, I will be offering
copies of that as well... stay tuned for more info.

In less than two weeks we will be enjoying Melissa's performance at the
Cow Palace in San Francisco (mooo!). We are expecting several visiting
list-members from out-of-town, and as usual, the 'Bay Area Bunch' wants
to have a BAB gathering for those who visit our beautiful Bay Area.
I know at least two-dozen BABsters from this list, and most of us have
attended various parties/tours/etc for list-visitors during the last year.
If you are planning to visit, and want to be included in any BAB plans,
please contact me via private email. If you are a San Francisco Bay Area
resident (that's from Monterey to Santa Rosa to Sacramento, inclusive)
and you are *not* yet on my BAB-list (and you want to be included in our
BAB-gatherings), please contact me via private email.
We are also looking forward to the return of Shirl, and some other visitors
during the week before New Years... I am planning several events, including
another party at my place.

I apologize to all those to whom I owe email... life has been full of

Special note to Angie ... glad to see you're still
on the list, but sorry you could only see a show in Salt Lake City... if
you join us in San Francisco I can guarantee you will see a much different
audience than the one you saw in Salt Lake.

However.... there may be one slight (okay more than slight) problem....
Poor Colleen fell off a ladder while she and Linda were doing something in

go before she was ready, thinking she was closer to the ground than she
was, and landing in an odd position. (Let's just leave the story at

Anyway, Colleen chipped a bone in her ankle and tore some tendons. (OUCH!!)

I am wearing my black "MEET ME IN THE BACK" Melissa Etheridge shirt.
Just had to say that -- so no one says, "Hey what does this have to do
with Melissa?" Absolutely nothing. Oh, did you see Melissa on ELLEN
the other night. It was a very subtle move on Ellen's part. I
couldn't believe that look on Melissa's face.
Well, it's true. I met Ellen for a weekend in Paris ... all
happenstance of course. She saw me from a distance and had to meet
me. I could understand. I mean, I like me, in fact I like talking to
me -- now, I try to do THAT only in the chatrooms. Although, I've
banned myself from several chatrooms. I hate those OPs ... but I love
being an OP. I mean when you ever in life get the chance to kick
people out of the rooms. Anyway, since I was slightly hungry, I
decided to eat ... not Ellen, but her food. Yes, she took me out to
lunch. Ellen's maxed out on her cards ... so I had to pay.
I told her to wash the dishes or something. Well, after she broke a
setting of eight, we were thrown into the street. Ellen stared into
my face ... I thought I had something hanging out of my nose. She
whispered, "Now what?" Of course I took that as a sign that she
thought I was cheap and easy. I was amazed at her psychic ability.
We went back to her room, cause the police thought we were either
loitering or soliciting. Ellen denied selling anything, then she had
the nerve to ask if hawking her book counted. Back to her room, which
was floral ... the lights were dim and MELISSA ETHERIDGE music was
playing in the background -- okay KRISTEN HALL's OUT IN THE COUNTRY
was playing then again it might have been the INDIGO GIRL'S Suicide
Alley -- but maybe it wasn't since I don't belong to the Indigo Girl's
listserv (AND WHY CAN'T THEY PUT A LITTLE "E" AT THE END OF LISTSERV?)
Oh, now I remember, it was Joan Armatrading's Love and Affection was
playing, and I was really getting into the mood. Very romantic ...
until Ellen slyly or shyly asked if I wanted to see her toys. You
might be saying, "NO WAY!." "WAY!!" I say. She said it could be a
lot of fun. Now, being raised guilty and the first to admit that my
hand is usually stuck in the cookie jar. OKAY, I never in my life
played with toys. 'Cept once. And I broke it. It wasn't a very good
model -- and I was new at it. That's another story. Had to ask
Ellen, "Toys?" "Yes." She said, "We can play TROUBLE." Trouble,
wow, now my mind was racing wondering if I should leave or ask for her
autograph or just what does this fantasy imply. I wanted to know her
most sensual fantasy. She left me sitting on the bed, winked and said
she'd be right back. I wondered if I should leave my clothes on ...
or be prepared ... although I was never a girl scout. Mom that though
the girl scouts was originally the HITLER YOUTH -- go figure. Anyway,
she came back wearing -- it was amazing. We played trouble, played it
hard, played it soft, played it fierce, played it gently. We played
it on the floor and on the bed. I think we played it under the bed,
oh and in the shower. Gotta do the shower. Clean is fun. I did get
angry. She would never let me be green, although, she got to be red
and blue. After that she broke out the Monopoly game. Whoa, that was
one long night. The best was BATTLESHIP.

"Judge Puts Same-Sex Marriage Ruling on Hold
The judge who declared Hawaii must allow gay marriages put the ruling on
hold Wednesday while the state appeals. Circuit Judge Kevin Chang agreed with
attorneys for the state that Hawaii would have a dilemma if couples were
allowed to marry and Hawaii's Supreme Court then overturned his ruling, The
Associated Press reported. The stay will remain in effect until the high
court rules, meaning gay couples won't be able to marry in Hawaii for at
least a year, if at all. Deputy Attorney General Rick Eichor said in arguing
for the stay that he will file an appeal within 30 days. That will send the

same-sex marriage is unconstitutional unless the state can show a compelling
interest in continuing it."

About those small crowds, I have a theory, my opinion--so take it for what it
is worth.
How many years has Melissa been touring in a row now...like 5? I think for
fans who have been to the shows the last 3-5 years, you've generally seen the
audience get bigger year to year. I think the biggest crowds I've seen here
in DC were at the peak times of Yes I Am (1994 and 1995).
Let's say that Joe Music Fan likes a lot of artists including MLE. He wants
to see MLE in concert and does, but doesn't necessarily need to see her
EVERY YEAR. He sees her, hopefully likes what he sees and hears, and is able
to say "Yes I did (see her)."
My opinion is, there are a lot of music fans out there who like MLE's music
and/or admire her for living HER life and not somone else's, (or whatever
reason they like her) and they go and see her. For them, seeing Melissa once
or twice is enough.
For example, I like Joan Osborne's music. I saw her in concert last year and
enjoyed her music very much. Am I itching to go see her again? Not really.
The CDs are enough for me. I'd rather save my money to go on some crazy
trip to see Melissa. :)
Then there are big fans who will see her anytime, and anywhere, if time and
finances permit. I think we can include a lot if not most of you on that
list!
So don't worry about the small crowds. I think they will build again after
Melissa takes some time off and starves us!

Hi,
And another thing, (disclaimer: I am hardly a poster woman for teetotalling)
BUT...
I *cannot* understand why I see a number of people wasted at concerts.
Especially if someone is a Melissa fan, and they spend all that money for
the tickets and all that energy into the anticipation of seeing her, and then
they get drunk (or stoned) and end up missing a lot of what's going on.
I'm not saying don't have fun or don't unwind, but I don't see what the point
is of getting completely tanked at a show. You knock into other people, and
what a shame...you miss all the details and other "little things" that happen
at the concert, things that you will not see or experience in the same way
again.
Anyway, my .02.

her security have been draping her in black since at least the YIA

either earlier this year or late last year about how MLE's been
stalked by someone (maybe more than one?). it's actually kind of sad
that it has reached this point but not too surprising considering

i can understand if people get upset when others around them are

Subject: audience behavior
Yeah, maybe not *all* U.S. audiences are as "lame" as those that made it
to the list recently, but after actually experiencing ME in concert in
Europe, I have to admit it would be hard to duplicate that sort of
audience involvement over here (I still wish you good luck in your
efforts, though, Tim :-) ). And it's not because we Yanks are any less
dedicated, or love ME less, or are any less certifiably insane, nope,
it's for one simple reason: reserved seats.
First you have the "natural selection": prospective concert goers in
Europe know that attending a ME concert will involve being on their feet
for 2 1/2 hrs straight, usually occupying about half as much floor space
as their body mass requires. Thus, the ratio of people who really REALLY
like ME tends to be a bit higher than here...
Then you have the fan bonding or lack thereof. To be in halfway decent
proximity to the stage, you better show up no less than 3 -4- hrs before
the doors to the venue open. Plenty of time to coordinate any planned
crowd action, get everyone properly psyched and teach the last few the
lyrics to "The green grass grew all around"
The density factor. Even if you haven't been paying attention to the
goings-on outside, or simply showed up too late, if the audience behind
you decides it's time to "do the wave", you don't have much choice than
go along or risk serious spinal injuries. The audience, willing or not,
almost *has* to react as one. Here, we have way too much "personal
space"
And, of course, venue size. This might sound slightly perverted, but I'd
much rather be in a crowd of 6,000 occupying a room designed for 5,000
than for 15,000....but I'm one of those hoping that this will be the
last U.S. tour featuring 10,000+ venues :-)
All in all, I'm glad that there's going to be a hiatus before the next
European Tour, so I can save up for airfare

Welcome Danielle, to both the list and NH (from another NH inhabitant). There
are more than a few of us from NH; some on the regular list, and more on the
info only list

Hey, that's great that you and your Mom share the same great taste in ME's
music! My Mom likes some of the music I like. I got her hooked on
Mary Chapin Carpenter when I left a tape in her car, but she's not big on
Melissa.

We are from all over... all over the world. There are listers in Canada,
Europe, Australia, New Zealand, US. Hmmmm... South America? Asia? Africa?
I can't recall but I wouldn't be surprised.

I agree completely..I was more than a little concerned about some of the
people I saw at the last MLE concert I attended. As far as I could see,
there weren't a whole lot of designated drivers -- just a lot of people
getting drunk. I love to see people getting into the show, but getting
drunk seems to me to be the best way to miss it.
My .02..now we have almost a nickle :-)

The time that you pick up tickets has nothing to do with what seats
you get. The tickets are in an envelope with your name on it so
they'll be the same tickets at any time of the day. But yes, it is a
lottery.

I was going to write "but do you want to leave the chance of there
being no concert tickets left?". However, that wouldn't be a problem
on this tour.

Proof positive that she doesn't see every review. There are dorkier
pictures of her that have been published.

People can do that without being drunk/stoned. Have you never had the
"good fortune" to be near people who thought they were dancing?

What a shame! People not blocking your view or crashing into you with
their poor attempts at dancing. I know I'm real upset when that doesn't
happen to me.

Hello everyone...
I haven't posted in a while so I thought I'd say hello...
I went to my favorite used record store last night. Breakdown Records in
Bayside, NY. They have a huge selection of live and bootleg CD's from a lot
of people... And they had like 5 or 6 Melissa CD's... can anyone lend me some
money... LOL... Anyways... My friend surprised me and bought me a bootleg CD
before she came over... She had stopped there... The CD is great... The only
thing is, I already have it. Now I know I can go back and exchange it, but I
am kinda broke and well I was a wondering if anyone would like to buy it?
It's called "Run baby run" and it has live songs from an overseas show on the
first leg of her YLS tour... Then it has the VH1 Honors concert songs on
it... It's $25.00... If anyone is interested, please e-mail me privately and
let me know. We;ll work it out... I'm gonna give it a few days and if I can't
sell it, then I'll bring it back... So... Let me know... =)
Happy Chanukkah to everyone, Jewish and not... =) And Happy Holidays, too...
Have a wonderful weekend... =)
Peace,
Kiva

P.S. I know that I owe some of you tapes from a trade... I have been having a

I was very surprised too. L.A. and Montreal were expected. But I thought for
sure that Amsterdam and Chicago would be in there. I've heard her rave about

Hi,
Joyce Stoliar asked which picture Melissa was objecting to. It ran in the
Nov. 14 issue of Rolling Stone, the one with Sheryl Crow on the cover.
There's a review on page 44 of Melissa playing the Target Center (MN) and
right above it is the "dorky" photo. I have to admit, the expression *is*
rather on the dorky side. Melissa sorta looks like she's got...um...an
overbite. And a kind of "what the heck are they doing out there?" look on
her face. Maybe somebody was taking her bra off or something....
I digress.
But Melissa just charmed the socks off of me by writing that letter!

you have ever bethere that is a mighty big tumble) Anyways There were also
many people sitting around me, they weren't eating but I was shot many
negative looks when my friend and I were dancing. Oh well.. I still had a
great time...

"Life Without Secrets : Melissa's music pales beside baby hoopla."
by A. Scharnhorst
Kansas City Star
Melissa Etheridge has always opened herself up for the world to
judge. Her life story is spread out among five albums--all the heartache,
fear, longing, disappointment and anger.
With each new record, the Leavenworth, Kan., native has seen her
following and reputation grow. Her decision four years ago to openly
discuss her homosexuality has done little to daunt that.
What it has done, however, is put her life under a magnifying glass
and establish her as a kind of poster child for the lesbian community.
In the past month, she and her partner, filmmaker Julie Cypher,
have been featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine and on ABC's "20/20."
Both stories have discussed the couple's decision to start a family.
(Cypher is due to have a baby, already named Austin, in January.)
Etheridge also was the featured artist on VH-1's "Storytellers,"
was mentned on the cover of Rolling Stone and was nominated for a VH-1
Fashion Award for the video version of "Your little Secret."
"It's a lot of major national coverage all of a sudden," she says
with a laugh, speaking in that trademark husky lilt.
She breathes a sigh at the mention of how well the "20/20"
interview had gone. "Oh," she pauses. "I'm glad. ...We were scared."
Under the spotlight the woman who shares her soul with the world is
suddenly feeling a little bit nervous. She admits that sharing her life
with her fans in song is one thing, but opening herself up for public
scrutiny is another.
"We've always kind of been in a bubble," she said. "We live in
liberal Los Angeles, and everyone around us is so supportive, and we never
have really been confronted. And with this, we were opening ourselves up
for that...(and) they certainly did confront us."
On the show, Etheridge and Cypher came across as committed, loving
partners who were just concerned about raising a healthy, happy
child--exactly the way they wanted to be presented, Etheridge said.
"We were hoping that we said the right thing, and we didn't get
emotional. We just wanted to be cool."
For everyone but her fans, the hoopla over the baby has
overshadowed Etheridge's music. It can be argued that Etheridge has grown
considerably as a songwriter and vocalist since her first album, but
critics are still taking her to task for her "blue-collar" lyrics and her
straight-ahead rock style.
Etheridge has learned to laugh about it--particularly that Rolling
Stone cover mention that referred to a disappointing concert review.
"What is that all about, huh?" she asks with partly feigned
credulity. She continues, answering her own question. "It's sort of the
good news and the bad news, you know. The good news is, you're known
(enough) that the publishers know that if they put your name on the cover,
they'll sell some magazines. But the bad news is, it's a lukewarm review.
So I don't know. I have to put (on) a positive spin."
The blue-collar references that critics make to the "Your Little
Secret" record are actually descriptions of Leavenworth. Those writers
have taken umbrage with the lines in "Nowhere to Go" that refer to the old
Leavenworth Wal-Mart, the federal penitentiary, Leavenworth's rail yards,
the Veterans Hospital and the Missouri River.
But they're familiar pictures to any kid who grew up in the Midwest
in the 1970s--and the song conveys all-too-familiar feelins for most
small-town teen-agers.
Etheridge's Kansas upbringing was anything but blue-collar. Her
father, who died several years ago, was a high school teacher.
Her mother, who lives in Arkansas, worked at Fort Leavenworth in
the computer simulation war-gaming area, she said.
Etheridge certainly has high-tech fans, some of who gather twice a
week on America Online to discuss her music and her life. One fan has even
put together maps of Leavenworth, pointing out the Wal-mart, the prison and
other landmarks.
Etheridge is honored--but clearly amused--at the thought.
"Poor Leavenworth...They're known for a prison and the most famous
homosexual," she pauses and her voice trails off. "Whatever."
Etheridge's fans seem to feel a particular pride of ownership
where's she is concerned-particularly but not exclusively the lesbian women
who believe that she speaks for them.
During Etheridge's emotionally charged performance last month in
St. Louis, one such fan talked about her disappointment that Cypher and
Etheridge are not discussing the legal and medical details of Cypher's
pregnancy.
But Etheridge sticks by her decision to keep some family matters
private. She thinks she has found a way to please most of her fans without
compromising herself. But other fans...
"It's really difficult because it will never be enough. No matter
what I do. ...Unless I were to go to their house and have dinner with them,
it would never be enough," she said.
"They get frustrated that I speak openly about my relationship, but
I haven't written a song about a woman. There's just no end to it. That's
the way of the world. You have to find your place and say, 'This is where
I am, this is the way I'm going to be.'
"I learned a long time ago (that) I just have to draw my lines and
do what feels right and good for me."

I guess the word i was looking for was "appropriate" behaviour. When
one is at a rock concert, one should be dancing, jumping around--in short
having a good time. Not sitting down and getting upset at others who spent
just as much, if not more money, than they did for dancing. If you want
to sit down sit in your den in front of your television set and watch VH1
or MTV for your concerts, that way people won't be in your way.
And of course, what is appropriate at one concert is inappropriate
at another.

And what does a change in musical style have to do with sexual
orientation? Is Michael Bolton gay because he changed from heavy
metal to shlock? Is Tori Amos gay because she changed from "rock
chick" to what she does now? People like Joni Mitchell, Michelle
Shocked and Joe Jackson must be awfully confused because they change
styles on practically every album.

Subject: Crowds/My First Time...
I was glad that the first several rows were on their feet when I saw her.
Originally I had seats in the bleachers for the YIA tour in Tacoma and I
left my friends and went off to cruise the crowd (couldn't help myself -
there was soooo much to see!!).
When the lights went down and she came on stage I was compelled to go up
closer and did. To my surprise there were three open seats in the second
row left side. I waited for the security dude to look the other way and
when he did I slipped right in. I stood there expecting at any moment to
be kicked out by Mr. Security or the owners of these prime location seats.
Neither happened and I stayed completely captivated by the performance of
this very talented woman!
I kicked myself for never seeing her before - but vowed never to miss
another show. What an experience that was and emotional too... many
memories associated with YIA and all that. I never told my friends where I
went only said I needed to be alone which they understood knowing how
shattered my heart was at the time. So I stood there balling my eyes out
most of the time and gained a new appreciation for Melissa - especially for
her song "Dance Without Sleeping." Can't wait for Friday's show!
It was also so amazing how many old friends I saw there! Folks I hadn't
seen in years. It's funny how some (probably most) of us wymmin start
dating someone, move in together and then lose touch with our friends...
You never see them again until they break up or in some way become single
again - or at a Melissa concert...

I'm new to the list and wanted to introduce myself and ask a few
questions. First my name is Julie Strietelmeier and I'm from
Columbus, IN. I've just recently become a Melissa Etheridge
addict. :-) I attended her concert in Indianapolis this past Oct.
and since then, I've been hooked. Now to the questions:
I've got all ME's american released CDs but I hear there are
imports... where can I buy them?
Does anyone know when/if ME will be on the Rosie O'donnald
show?
...And now for my strangest question: I happened to be watching
VH1's 'Pop up Videos' show and saw a Meatloaf video of "I would
do anything for love". Towards the end of this video, there is a female
singer that is only identified as Ms.Loud. I would bet money that it's
ME. Does anyone know if I'm correct?

female artists...Fiona Apple was super and Tracy Bohomn just rock the 4,000
people who gathered for the electric event!! I saw Tracy back in July on the
Summerland Tour (my job was promoting the tour) and she was good. But I was
just taken back this time!! :-)

Hello, hello!
I'm new to this list, though not new to Melissa, and wanted to introduce
myself.
I also wanted to touch on something, hopefully without starting a flame
war:
At the St. Louis concert, there were a number of women, as there are
with all ME concerts. This is cool. But I was surrounded, in front and
behind, by groups of people talking and carrying on DURING Melissa's
songs and spoken intros - yelling so they could be heard amongst
themselves over the pa.
I drove 5 hours each way to see that concert. I came to hear her. Like
the rest of you, Melissa's music touches me, and some of the songs are
sacred to me, remind me of very special moments in my life. For these
people to be carrying on and talking about irrelevant stuff as though it
was a bar and Melissa wasn't performing live was incredibly vulgar,
self-centered behavior. Their carrying on actually ruined 3 songs for
me, cause I couldn't hear them.
Someone commented that proper behavior for a concert was subjective. I
disagree. What you bought with your 35 bucks is the right to a spot,
sitting unless everyone in front of you is standing, to LISTEN to the
performer. Your right to do as you like stops when you interfere with
someone else's ability to do what people gathered there for in the first
place; No one has the right to disrupt another's ability to
hear/see/enjoy the concert. Such inconsiderate behavior is beyond
belief, especially amongst ME fans. I'd have thought we would be more
sensitive than that.
I HOPE none of you were the ones acting this way. Next time I go, I
guess I'll have to be sure to get front row seats, no matter how much
they cost, so I can get the show.
Now... I'm glad to be here, and glad that, from what I've been told,
this is a good, solid group of ME fans. I've been in MEIN for a while
now, but find them to be just after our money. So... check out my
webpage, and all, and I'll be hearing from ya, talking w/ ya all later.
Keep it precious,
John
