This quote came up from one of my other lists I thought you might find it
interesting.
"I have never seen, in the 20 years that I have been in this
business, lawyers from the network so involved in the project.
They were there every day dictating how and when we could touch,
hug, hold hands, and kiss each other. It became so frustrating,
because I couldn't figure out why I couldn't show how much my
character needed and leaned on Colleen's character. People who
are in love with each other touch when they are in pain."
--Actress Valerie Bertinelli to The Advocate on the filming of
the TV movie 'Two Mothers for Zachary' in which she plays a
lesbian who loses custody of her son to her own mother. The
movie, based on the real-life Sharon Bottoms case, airs on ABC
Sept. 22.

Well when you look at the track record that this list has for putting people
together, it's really quite amazing. I only know of a few romantic couplings
personally, but I've heard of more through others on the list...not to mention
the fabulous friendships that I *know* have been established. Ahhhh, love is

It's not a very complicated thing to set up a list and administer it using

I'd be happy to get it started if they're enough interest. Those of you

Hi all,
Thanks everyone for keeping up to date on when Melissa is going to be on
Rosie... (10/14) just to reiterate.
I was just watching E! At the tale end I caught something about Melissa
and her Joplin Movie. They did say that she will be doing the part, but
another Joplin movie is in the works...this other one is being endorsed by
the Joplin family and is starring the girl from "I Shot Andy Warhol." I
can't remember her name and I believe that is the title of the film..I
have never seen it.
I also saw that Ellen is on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. The
magazine's title is GAY TV...sonething like, should Ellen join 22 other
gay and lesbian characters? Something like that... I didn't get to look
at it for very long. I'll have to go buy one.
Geez, I feel like gossip central.

Hi y'all out there...
Just reading the Melbourne daily newspaper, the Herald-Sun today and noticed a
headline that caught my interest..."Wagga Creates a Stir in Kansas". Dateline:
Leavenworth.
We all know the significance of Leavenworth as Mel's birthplace. In fact, I
believe
I have read stories here on the List in the past, detailing pilgrimages by the
faithful to Leavenworth, the only city in the world to recongnise Melissa
Etheridge Day.
Sorry...I digress. OK. well, apparently, Leavenworth, Kansas, has an Australian
sister city -- which one?, I hear you all ask....Wagga, or as they refer to it
over
there, Wagga Wagga.
Apparently, recently the Leavenworth city managers decided to name a new
road currently under construction after their sister city, but
the locals aren't happy with the idea, 'cause they say Wagga Wagga Drive
"sounds funny", to quote local resident Richard Layton Etheridge
City manger Phil Urban Etheridge conceded, saying that no matter what, they
had to take into consideration the feelings of the people who pay the
bills...all the
residents of Leavenworth. Afterall, the new road is 5 kilometres in length and
is
costing the townsfolk some $14 million.
Now, I don't want to rub it in, or anything, but we appear a little less
threatened
by funny sounding names here in Australia, because Wagga Wagga already has
two streets named after their fair sister -- Leavenworth Drive and Kansas Drive
.....and are already planning their next leap in urban town planning,....You
can

Subject: "Up Close"; NTG single
For those who weren't able to hear the "Up Close" radio broadcast
featuring MLE, you didn't miss much. Lots of commercials, a bunch of album
tracks, a little conversation (nothing we haven't heard a few times
already), and one live track (SF-- I believe it was the performance on the
DWS cd-single; this is one of my favorite live tracks actually). Part 2
is scheduled to air next week.
Picked up the NTG cd-single today; I actually like the solo acoustic
version of NTG. Nice to hear it stripped down and a bit more subtle.
Gives it quite a different flavor.
(NMEC: I also picked up Carrie Newcomer's new CD; if you like Mary-Chapin
Carpenter, definitely check this out. Carrie has an absolutely gorgeous
voice, similar style to MCC, and really nice songwriting-- plus, she lives
around here, and judging from the couple of times I've said hello to her &
the general "word on the street," she's an incredibly nice person.
Jennifer Kimball, from The Story, sings harmony on several tracks.)

Did anyone happen to tape _Two Mothers for Zachary_? I anted to watch it,

LOUSY!! If anyone taped it, I'd be willing to pay for a copy of it. I

Here's a side note for anyone interested.... Peggy Orenstein, the author
of _Young Women, Self Esteem, and the Confidence Gap_ will be speaking on
USD's campus. this is what was written in the flyer:
"Orenstein reveals that even girls who place a premium on academic
excellence are debilitated by a profound lack of confidence in themselves,
their appearance, and their abilities, and the female students learn these
lessons of silence and self-doubt in their schools. Orenstein explores
the social forces in effect in our schools and looks for clues as to how
we can alter this troubling reality. Orenstien will be speaking on
Thursday evening [Oct 10th] at 8:oo pm in the [Coyote Student Center.]"
Also featured at the Thirteenth Annual Women's Research Conference will be
the Neon Girls. "Christy Simpson and Joan Driskill are Kansas City
singer/songwriters with an acoustic folk sound and a mix of riotously
irreverent, deeply passionate and socially relevant material. The Girls
released their second recording in 1995 and were highlighted on the Kansas

Subject: Ellen and some MEC and Rosie
Hey y'all!
This may have been posted already. If so, well you've already read
this much you might as well read the rest.
In the Friday, Sept. 27 edition of the USA Today - there is a snippet
about a poll that Entertainment Weekly will release this week. The
poll states that 72% of adults would not be offended if a TV show's
lead character were gay. But 40% of 1,003 adults polled believe
Ellen would lose viewers if it happens on that show (margin of error
3.1 percentage points).
Now for MEC - someone mentioned that ME will be on Rosie in October.
Where did you get this date? On Rosie's show one day last week, she
was telling about the big name musical guests booked for her show and
Melissa wasn't mentioned. Those that were mentioned were Wynonna
Judd, Garth Brooks, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, and
(yesyesyesyesyesyes - YES!) REBA! Not only will Reba AND Elton be on
the show...they'll be on the same week! YEAH!!!!!! I have to
commend and thank Rosie for bringing so many musical acts to the show
from such a wide range of backgrounds. Thanks to her, I now have
several new artists to listen to...like Ann Nesby and Billy Porter.
Okay...that is all for now. Hope you all have a wonderful Hump Day!
I should have known it would be rainy and cool today, because that's
just the way this week is going - badly!

Did anyone catch Amanda Marshall on Good Morning America last week? She did
a great job. She looked a little tired actually (10 months of touring will
do that to ya', I personally know) but vocally, she ruled! I really dig
Birmingham, boy. I finally caught the BMSW duet on VH-1 w/Joan. I tell you
ME's people must be in good with the folks at VH-1, she's CONSTANTLY being
recognized on that channel. I think it's great!
My final .02 is on a recent dispute I read on this post dated (9/26)
regarding Class, Education, and Healthy Relationships. I think it's very
funny how easy it is for some people in this country to assume that money is
the answer to all things good and evil and that it naturally offers a
grandiose supply of every comfort, desire and pleasure place we could want
for, including a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP. Geez! Wake up and smell the real
world PALEEZZ!! Support and love are the true foundations of what a healthy
adult relationship is all about. NOT about how many toys you had as a
child, whether you were driven to school in a jaguar, where you lived, or
even whether you went to a community college or Harvard. Sure, there are
diff. social classes, sure there are diff. levels of education, but PLEASE
don't preach that without the best of these things one can't function as
well in an adult relationship because THEN I must ask, "If I weren't able to
afford a computer in my home, or hadn't graduated with honors from college,
would I be any less able to love my husband? or FUNCTION in society as you
say?"
Besides, last I checked, all of my very rich friends were so insecure they
couldn't even tie their own shoes without daddy's approval, or they were
being disowned because they didn't date a certain TYPE, I mean come on.
Does that make for a healthy spirit and/or soul to you? Think about it.

German TV station Bayern 3 is going to show a rerun of "Live
aus dem Schlachthof" with MLE and the Jeff Healey Band in the
night from next Tuesday to Wednesday. To be exact, that's
9 October 1996,
0:00 to 0:45 Central European Time
(or 8 October, 23:00 in the UK, Ireland etc.). If you have a
satellite dish for the Astra system, you can receive Bayern 3
at 11 141 MHz, horizontal polarization (audio subcarriers
7.02 and 7.20 MHz).
Enjoy,

Hey ME fans! I'm a college student who loves ME's music and have
been on the receiving end of the Mailing List for quite some time now. I
live in the northern corner of Alabama and the last time my friends and I
were fortunate enough to see Melissa was on July 1 of 1995! I know
there's obviously some tour going on now, and I'm a member of MEIN, but I
haven't heard of anything in the southeast region. If there's anyone out
there that knows some info, PLEASE pass it on! Also, if there's anyone
reading who's from the Atlanta area, please give me a buzz because I'm
looking at doing my internship there and would like to make some
connections before I come that way. Would love to hear from you all!

Yes we did meet and Vanessa is a sweetie gals! Definately one to grab a

was in the midst of becoming very unattached not to mention way to shy

Subject: BRUCE!!!
I don't post often, but I think I'm going to burst if I don't tell someone
about this show. Just got back from seeing MLE in Milwaukee. It was the
best show I've ever seen in my life (2nd time seeing her). Melissa was her
usual, put-on-a-helluva-show-for-'em self.
The Bradley Center was only maybe 1/3 full, Melissa said early on, "so
you must be the people who couldn't get tickets to Bruce's show."
Unbeknownst to me (I had driven up from Chicago to see her) Springsteen was
playing at another venue tonight as well. But I guess he must've finished
early (more on that later....)
Y'all know the set list by now; the order's a bit different for the second
leg of the tour, but the songs are the same. Our seats were about halfway back
on the main floor -- right next to the "satellite stage." Thanks to you all,
I'd been warned ahead of time, so we were right on top of it by the time she
got back there to rip into the second part of the show. (Quick fashion report:
black t-shirt, faded denim w/purple velvet swirly designs, the ubiquitous black
pants and fake-snakeskin Doc Martens) Shook John's hand as he came on. I'm
normally a somewhat reserved person, but when it comes to MLE concerts, I have
no shame. I screamed and danced and generally went nuts the whole time.
I still can't believe I was literally a foot from her. Hell, we could read the
little tape on the back of the Ovations that said "Main" and F.O.H (what does
that mean??) I shook ME's hand as she left, and I got a guitar pick!!
After they got back to the main stage and she finished up her first
encore (LTWID, of course) she went to introduce the next song (I'm sorry, I
really don't remember what she said, I was too in awe) and the next thing I
know, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN is on stage with her and they're singing Pink
Cadillac. I saw Melissa and Bruce sing together, LIVE!!! I'm still trying to
get over this one, folks. Was anyone else there?? I didn't see any bowling
shirts.
OK, I'll shut up now. Just one more thing, does Kenny remind anyone else
of Liberty DeVito, Billy Joel's drummer, or is it just me?
Take care all,
Kate

YES! YES! YES!
If I were stuck on a desert island with only one album it would be
Joni Mitchell's 1971 release "BLUE"... a friend recently said to me:
>This album cannot be recommended too strongly! This is one of the few

After resisting years of requests to publish a 'best of' compilation,
Joni is finally releasing a 2-CD compilation next Tuesday, Oct 8 (in
the U.S. I don't know release dates elsewhere).
There is a Joni web-page at:

She will also be appearing on Rosie O'Donnell's show 'sometime in October'.

Re: the recent comments about Carrie Newcomer...
Catch her live if you can... she's touring heavily through December, and
Jennifer Kimball (formerly with Jonatha Brooke of the STORY) is performing
with Carrie through mid-October... in fact, catch any of these three women
live... all are excellent singers and songwriters... and for those of you
who are used to large arena shows, the intimacy of small venues will be a
refreshing change.

Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA--PLEASE READ
Hi, all!
As has been announced, I'm going to attempt to keep the
peace as list flame moderator in MLE-Town. Some of you
may cheer and toast me with kamikazes, some of you may
wish me well, some of you may even cry...and the rest of
you probably just don't give a hell. Whatever your feelings,
I'm here to serve and serve I shall. I'll not even bother to
deem myself, "Deb's Replacement," as that would not be fair
to Deb or to myself--no one can replace Deb and I don't feel
like even trying to live up to her rep! I would like to take the
opportunity to publicly thank Deb for all of her hard work and
patience--her participation on the administrative level will be
*sorely* missed. I'd also like to thank everyone who
has sent support my way thus far...we'll see how you feel in
a few weeks! I will not be donning Deb's leather gear,
as it's been donated the Hard Rock Cafe (she will, however,
loan me leather wrist cuffs and/or a whip when/if needed). I
will most certainly wear clothing during the administration of
my official duties, though it's not yet been determined
exactly what I'll wear. It's very possible that I will see some
things differently than did Deb, but the rules will remain the
same and things should remain business as usual.
As far as general posting guidelines, you all probably know
them but I'll go over them just the same.
1) As has always been the case, cross posting from other
lists or newsgroups is a no-no and can merit a warning upon
repeated offense or if the material is extremely offensive in
nature. [**Exception: Cross-posts are allowed if they pertain
to the topic at hand, as we've seen in the past few weeks
with the gay parenting and Ellen issues.** When
cross-posting occurs under this exception I will send a
reminder of the guidelines to the sender as a technicality
only--no warning will be given.]
2) Posting of private e-mail w/o the consent of the originator
is considered poor netiquette It's also not acceptable fare for
this list and offenders will be issued a warning.
3) CHAIN LETTERS, GET-RICH-QUICK SCHEMES AND
'URBAN LEGENDS' ARE GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE
REMOVAL FROM THIS LIST! This is stated in the FAQ that
we all received when we first subscribed. This includes
posts about 'Killer Computer Viruses', little boys who want
post-cards, etc. As I do not have the ability to sub or unsub,
removal based on this offense will be entirely up to the list
owners.
4) Personal pot-shots and flames will not be tolerated on this
list. Spirited discussion and mature debate is welcome and
disagreements may be voiced, but direct attacks on each
other will simply not fly. Thinly veiled attacks against one
another (ie--"You know who") will also be grounds for me to
issue a warning. If you feel that you simply *must* give
someone a piece of your mind, give it to them off-list.
**I will not be responsible for off-list feuding. If you become
involved in an argument off-list, whether or not you are the
perpetrator, there is absolutely nothing I can do to resolve the
issue. If you feel strongly enough about something that
someone from this list has written to you through private mail
with regard to list material (if the situation turns into
harassment, threats, etc), I will read a complaint, but I will
not intervene. If you feel threatened or someone will just not
leave you alone, you must take it up with the offender's
provider. A person's off-list actions will have no bearing upon
their list status, unless it comes to my attention that a
person or persons are harassing or threatening people off-list
on a regular basis. If this situation ever occurs, the matter
will be forwarded to the list owners for their review.
5) As far as finger-pointing among listers...this, too, is a
no-no. I won't take kindly to people writing to me and telling
me that what someone else said offended them and that they
think a warning should be issued. If you are offended enough
to think a person should get a warning, then I suggest that
you take it up with them through private mail. Remember--
I'm subscribed to the same list that everyone sees. If things
start to get rough, I'll intervene and attempt to keep things
civil.
**Administrative warnings/suspensions will never be made
public--no exceptions.
6) This is not the MLE Info-Only list. NMEC is allowable as
long as it's in good taste and follows the guidelines set forth
for MLE-related posts. NMEC is a big part of what makes
this list 'family' to a great number of people. I will, however,
reserve the right to ask that any topic (MEC or NMEC) be
discontinued if it is apparent that the participants are allowing
things to get out of hand (ie--flame wars erupting every other
post).
For now, I will send a majority of ADMIN posts from this
address ([email protected]). However, on weekends and
in the evening, if I see a need to send ADMIN messages or
posts, I'll send them from my AOL account
([email protected]). I'll try not to be too confusing
where this is concerned.
I think that just about does it for now. :-) If anything comes
to me at a later date, I'll post it. In closing, I'd just like to say
that I think we all make up a mature, diverse, friendly, safe
place in which to share our differences and similarities--the
biggest of which is our mutual admiration for Melissa
Etheridge. I've not encountered any other list or newsgroup
that is as pleasant to participate in as MLether. Thanks in
advance for helping myself and all other listers to keep it that
way! :-)

Hey now, an El Lay girl could get a complex with all that anti-LA talk.
Oh, wait a minute, I don't have *time* to get a complex here in LA: let's
see, VH1 Storytellers a couple of weeks ago, Paula Cole in a couple more,
Melissa Ferrick, Wild Colonials, Phranc, etc. pretty much anytime I'd
like, leggy girls in black leather all over the place, and I've already run
into Ellen once. Yup, LA really sux.
And, as our fearless Margo experienced, where else do ya get fruit with
breakkie?
All in good fun, of course :)

Trace, Melissa`s guitartech puts these tapes on her guitars. She has about 3 or
4 Ovations with her and most of them are tuned different. So Trace puts the
tapes on them to make it easier for him to give Melissa the right guitar to the
right song. He only has this little light and a pocket lamp during a show.
Speaking of Melissa`s guitars, the strings for her guitars are changed at least
once a day (on a showday). Thats really a long job to do, to change 36 or 48
strings of the Ovations and the ones from about three more 6 string guitars.
One Question I have: Who from this list plans to come to the shows in Florida ?
I might come to those shows and now that I never met anyone from this list in
person I would be happy to meet.

I'm writing for a MElister and cyber-friend from Washington state who is
presently in ST Louis for Melissa's shows there (St Louis on Saturday, and
Moline on Sunday).
She left her MEIN confirmation postcard behind in the rush to fly east, so
she's wondering what procedures she needs to follow at WILL CALL to obtain
her tickets already purchased from MEIN.
Has anyone else here experienced the problem of missing MEIN postcards
(lost, delayed in the mail, etc)... do you have suggestions of correct
procedures to follow at WILL CALL to obtain tickets already purchased
via MEIN... does the venue have *names* of purchasers for MEIN tickets,
or do they just have a sales order number to associate tickets with the
original confirmed purchase? Any suggestions?
I have never purchased tickets from MEIN, so I'm unfamiliar with the
entire process. Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Happy Friday fellow groovy listers!
I just called the Gaithersburg Microbrew/Tavern and found out that the
entertainment scheduled for the night of our gathering (Oct. 12) is a band
called, 'Soul Providers.' The person I spoke to said the band plays
alternative and classic rock-type music as well as some orig. songs. So...
that may be a pretty cool added feature to our evening.
Our gathering starts at 4:00pm and Soul Providers take the stage bet. 8:00
& 9:00. We'll definitely have plenty of time to chat before the music
starts kicking.
And Kate, you lucky, lucky lister you, getting to see MLE and Bruce sing
together! Thanks for sharing your story with us.

as a clarification to susan's post, this excerpt is actually from liz
smith, a famous new york gossip columnist whose column is syndicated
in probably hundreds of papers throughout the country. liz also
appears on E!'s "gossip show" with several other gossip columnists,
so perhaps she will mention MLE on this weekend's show.
regardless, it's a big boo-boo, and liz should be getting on her copy
editors' cases for this slip. however, it's not the s.j. mercury's
fault.
>Julie is maybe 30 years old. I don't think Janis was even alive when
>Julie came to be. Bad paper bad bad.
well, julie was alive when janis died, but she was only 4-5 years
old.
in addition, the column is accompanied by a B&C era picture of MLE -
is that the best they could do? liz goes on to say, "The Tri-Star
film will utilize Joplin's own gritty, soaring voice, Taylor not
being much of a singer. But the Paramount pic has power-belter
Etheridge - can't wait to hear her version of 'Piece of My Heart' or
'Me and Bobby McGee.'"
hmm...i'm kind of thinking i need to send liz a tape. :-)

"But Paramount is also on the Joplin beat. The studio is rushing to
complete pre-production on its Janis tale, a rough and ready version with a

Hi everyone! :)
Boy it's been awhile since I've written! I almost feel like a
lurker!
Anyways, I haven't seen any posts regarding Melissa appearing on Much
Music ever since her "Spotlight" aired on September 18th and 19th.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Much Music's (Canada's
version of MTV) programming, "Spotlight" is a half-hour focus on an artist's
videos. For the more
prominent artists, the coverage is spread over two days. As far as I
can tell, this is the FIRST TIME Melissa has had *two* spotlights!
Wheee! :)
For those interested, the videos shown were:
Like The Way I Do
Bring Me Some Water
*Those two videos made me laugh, because despite the different songs,
the videos are _exactly the same_. Identical background and
everything. The videos must have been shot at the same concert
appearance. Hee hee.
Similar Features
Let Me Go (my favourite. Even in black and white, Melissa is
beautiful, and she looks like she's having a great time!)
2001
I Want To Come Over
Ain't It Heavy (Melissa's smile is infectious. Truly a very casual,
laid back video.)
Come to My Window
I'm the Only One
Nowhere to Go
Very worthwhile. I loved it...I haven't seen many of her videos at
all. Is a video compilation available? Do many other people have
access to her videos? I only see the ones which are currently
popular (ie. Your Little Secret, I Want to Come Over, and now,
Nowhere to Go). That is why her earlier releases were such a joy to
see.
Sigh. I still have not caught a glimpse of the infamous
"whothehellisinthetaxi?" video.
Sincerely,
Lisa J. :)

Maggie was my *first* live face-to-face meeting with another MElister,

At least I didn't mention *where* we met :) And I'm thankful Maggie

Rhondda continued her teasing, writing of our Shawn Colvin show:
>great show! so, how's your head today, john? i think i've managed

LOL! Yes, just a little self-inflicted punishment, folks (I was afraid I
might *enjoy* it too much if Rhondda gave me punishment ). I brought
my recording Walkman to the show... was super discreet about recording
Shawn, making all adjustments and tape changes by touch... but *after*
the show I discovered that in the darkness I had inserted the mike in
the *earphone* jack. As Rhondda can testify, I was more than a little
upset with myself... BTW, the earphone jack is now taped-over.

Does anyone have the updated lister b-day list? The last one I have is from
April 96.
Okay...it's getting closer. Tampa, November 2nd. Who wants to get together
before the show? Who wants to go out after the show? YBOR!! (great place to
party!)
Thanks! :D

I second that!!! I've already heard from Jesse in Tallahassee who is
coming down for the show. Listers have been meeting all over the
country. Looks like Tampa could be the next big shindig. MLE is playing
the Ice Palace, which is our brand new ice hockey arena, and it's huge.
As far as I know, there are still seats left. Any of you BABers want to
check out the *other* Bay area? :)
Also, Tim Dunker, if you're planning on attending the Tampa show, email
me privately. :)

Subject: St. Louis show--WOW
Hi everyone,
I would be such a happy camper today if my computer had not *crashed* in a
big way last night as I signed on to write my review of the show (right now
I'm using a friend's 'puter--don't know where to get mine serviced on a
Sunday). Anyway..............
Tailgate report--Good time was had by all. Most of us met as planned
(Kelley, where were you?), I think we had about 15 people show up. Pictures
should be available soon.
Concert report--Did I hear someone say this woman can *Rock*? St. Louis was
blown away. Melissa came on stage about 8:10, and continued for (about) 3
hours. My MEIN tickets were in row 22, but when she went to the back stage,
I went up to the front and staked a claim at the stage. Through the show,
she talked about her St. Louis connections--her dad was from here, and they
came "to the big city" a lot to see her relatives. She told us that if
people here said they were related to her, they probably are. She also kept
us updated on the baseball game (which, when St. Louis is winning, is always
good for a five minute ovation), and talked about how her dad had tried out
for the Cardinals (ok, St. Louis is very much a baseball town, and this kind
of stuff goes over really well).
Set list--
1. IRLY
2. IIWT
3. IWTCO
4. AUK
5. CTMW
6. NTG
7. SP
8. Change
9. SL
10. ICHBY
11. AIH
12. AAG
13. LMG
14. ATWTH
15. Resist
16. BMSW
17. ITOO
Announcement that the Cardinals won the baseball game :)
18. YLS
19. LTWID
20. TWIO
Her voice stayed strong and was really clear throughout the show. I thought
she looked and sounded rested........I took some pictures from my little
space at the foot of center stage, I don't know if they'll "happen" or not.
Shanks had his guitar/crotch in my face as he did the "extended blues-y
thang" at the end of ITOO. So I used the opportunity to take pictures--not
sure how they'll turn out.
Obligatory fashion report--blue denim shirt over a black t-shirt, and black
stretch knit (?) pants (I touched them and still don't have a clue). She was
definitely not having a bad hair day--she looked great. Shanks was in my
face a lot more than Melissa, but I did get to shake both their hands. I
didn't get any guitar picks, 'though.
I can't wait to get to Chicago next week to see her again--the only problem
is.....how will I know of any lister get togethers if I don't have access to
my e-mail????? Aaaaarrrggghh--I want my computer to be well again soon.
Anyway, talk to y'all later (I hope),
Susie

Hi to everyone!!
Yes, Cindy will be in Orlando for 8 days, arriving on 21 November'96. First
time for me
in Orlando and I was hoping if anyone could tell me about a good place to buy
Melissa
posters and/or other merchandise in Orlando, as they are virtually impossible to
buy in
New Zealand, and my bedroom is in extreme need of an update where mural
decorations are
concerned (Brad Pitt lost his touch quite a while ago ;-)
I'll be going to Disneyworld and all the other touristie places, so if anyone
knows of a
good place quite close to Disneyworld and all, it would save me alot of time
getting
lost.
>From Orlando I'll be flying out to Holland, so I don't know if there's any
Dutchies on
the list, but I'd love some recommendations on night clubs in Amsterdam and some
other
hot spots that aren't to be missed.
Due to a few minor problems with my connection to the list, I haven't been able
to send
any post to the list, but I have to respond to the vegemite saga, being a Kiwi
and all
(originally I'm actually Dutch, but that's not the point). Anyway, I work in a
Bed and
Breakfast hotel in Auckland (Aspen Lodge, if anyone's thinking of visiting New
Zealand
;-), and naturally vegemite is put on the tables each morning. I must say, it's
usually
the Americans who are game enough to try it, and too stubborn to admit it's the
foulest
thing they've ever put on their toast :D
One time we had 3 young men from Kentucky, one of whom thought the vegemite was
Nutella,
and very enthusiastically spread it on his toast. You can just imagine the
expression
on hisface ;-) I gave him credit, as he ate it all, and you wouldn't even see
ME
eating toast with THAT much vegemite on it!!! Couldn't help but give the poor
guy hell
for the rest of the day. For those of you who live in Orlando, I'd be more than
happy
to bring over a big jar of vegemite so you can taste what all the fuss is about.
Have a lurvely day!!

Hey, my goof was an accident pure and simple - and I dare anyone to find
another grammatical error in my list posts, either before that silly remark
or since.
If there is a bad grammar trend being started, i don't think that I can be
given credit for starting it, I have seen far worse gaffs than my two letter
one, or Beth's, for that matter. One day, I'm going to play the nit-picker
and start posting snippy comments whenever I see one of these errors,
though, to be dead honest, sometimes that would require quoting a whole post!

Nope, I'm in no corners, and if I were, you could only join me by invitation

"Though she fills major concert halls everywhere, writes stunningly
beautiful rock compositions, and speaks out for a variety of causes,
Etheridge remains at heart an unpretentious gal from the Midwest."

Subject: Songs that provok
A while ago somebody asked which song of ME has a special meaning, well a
lot of songs have a special meaning to me. But the one with that special
ring is "The letting go". I was in a straight relationsip for 7 years, (yes
was, not anymore) while in the (at that moment )back of my head I knew it
was wrong.
At some point I finally addmitted to myself that I'm atrackted to women and
I knew I had to let my ex go. Although I knew that that was the right thing
to do, I couldn't do it and I was very scared. So i put a ME cd in and at
that moment "The letting go" was playing, and I listened to the song very
carefully. At that moment, with that song, I simply knew it was time to just
quit the relationship, and to choose for my feelings. To me that is what the
song is all about.

Subject: NMEC - The List
Here's a story that the MLE list members might find interesting.
One year ago, on 12 October 1995 I posted:
> I shall delurk briefly to post the following, from today's
> (12/10/95) _Independent_:
>
> "Melissa Etheridge's talents as a singer-songwriter have been
> clear ever since her 1988 debut album hit the platinum mark, and
> since then, she has cemented her status as one of America's top
> performers. Her latest album, _Your Little Secret_ released on
> 13 Nov, features the same musicians who have backed Etheridge on
> stage since the release of her last album, _Yes I Am_. Melissa
> will be giving an exclusive showcase concert at Dingwall's,
> Camden Lock, London NW1, to promote the new album."
That post got a response from right down the hall here at LBS from
another list-member, Sarah L. Although Sarah & I had never met, her
enthusiasm for MLE persuaded me to give her my extra free ticket,
and we went to the concert on 16 October.
Over the course of the year, we ended up going to a number of other
concerts together -- MLE (31 January), Joan Osborne, Nathalie
Merchant, Alanis Morrissette, Tracy Chapman, k d lang, Ani di
Franco, MLE (with Bryan Adams), Dar Williams, and Mary-Chapin
Carpenter.
Well, you can guess the rest. We found out that we had a lot in
common beyond shared musical tastes, and, to paraphrase Emily,"that
was the beginning of the rest of our lives".
Those listers who made it to the January list gathering might
remember that Sarah was married at the time. After getting a call
on the big white clue-phone, Sarah realised that there might be a
connection between her undying passion for MLE, problems in her
marriage, and some related issues. After several months of
soul-searching, she and Gordon (who's a great guy, actually) split
up, and are in the process of getting divorced. It hasn't been an
easy or painless decision, but it seems to be the right one.
Now we're sharing a postal code (NW3) and a CD collection. No cats
so far, though. :(
Just another illustration of how powerful this list is in providing
somewhere for people to meet & get to know each other. Thanks, Dave &
Glenna, for being such wonderful list-owners; Deb & Jen for being
such great (past and future) flame monitors, and to all the regular &
irregular contributors to the list, those who we've met in person,
corresponded with, or just read on the list.
Best to everyone,
Sarah L. & Kate

On mine, the AM/FM switch, the CRO2/MTL switch, and, of course, the operation
light, are taped over, all from similar experiences. :)
Tori got us tickets to Shawn's free show in DC; I think it's incredibly cool
that she's doing a free tour, I've never heard of such a thing (true shows,
not in-store appearances). And the new album is outstanding!

Shirl, Shirl, Shirl, given up on the jeep thing???? Serves them right for
making you wait so long. BTW Honda just did their Canadian launch of THEIR
SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) I worked on the launch here in Banff. They are
to date only made with right hand drive, but when they are manufactured in
the US you might want to look into trading up. Its a mighty nice looking
vehicle complete with a cooler in the back and a picnic table that comes out
of the floor. Let me tell you that cooler can a hold a good supply of your
FAVORITE refreshments, ;->
The vehicle is called the CR-V and is definnately compatable in the looks
department to any of the Jeeps on the market today.
AND Shirl, you didn't need the Honda to make you a chic Magnet ;->

Hello everyone,
I forgot to post yesterday about Shawn's appearance on Rosie yesterday. She
was great! She sang "get out of my house" and was incredible. When Rosie
talked to her, Rosie went on and on about how much she loved her music.
Thank you to the people on this list who recommended her music to me because
i had never heard of Shawn Colvin before. Just as a reminder, Shawn is on
Letterman on Friday night.
Also, Lou Diamond Phillips made an appearance on Rosie to because of
International Child's Day (or something like that). It was nothing special,
just humorous to me because whenever i see LDP, i think of MLE and JC.
Anyways, enjoy ellen on Leno tonight everyone.

Well, *this* is a little embarrassing. It was, in fact, in my datebook.
However, since that day was also Philly's Coming Out Day Block Party and
I was out registering voters and hanging out all day, I never actually
CHECKED my datebook. So I have no idea what happened. The info came
from the Philly Inquirer (TV section, I think, but may have been
someplace else). So, if I misled anyone here, please accept my apologies
- didn't mean to get your hopes up. Sorry bout that!

it's not that john didn't know what he was doing - we thought we
*were* early! it's just that we had to spend 20 minutes or so trying
to find parking in north beach, one of the most difficult places to
park in the city. oh, and then once we found a space and was backing
into it, some guy tried to tell us that the spot was his - funny, but
i didn't think that if you park your truck in the bus stop with your
hazards on and you're across the street from your truck when the spot
opens up, that means you were reserving the spot for yourself.
we had to write down the guy's license plate number just in case he
decided to vandalize my car (it was fine). after walking to the
venue and trying in vain to find 2 seats to sit at (general
admission), the show started about 2 minutes later. no time left to
fiddle with teeny weeny controls...

Finally this snippet from the 10/6/96 Sunday Patriot News, Harrisburg, PA.:
Final Notes On Summer Concerts:
At varying times from May to early August it was the summer of '66, '76, or
'86 - Rod Stewart; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Chicago; Styx; Kansas; The Monkees;
Meat Loaf (sic) and James Taylor made their way to Chocolatetown. Then in mid-
August it was back to the future, or at least the present, with Phish, Hootie
and the Blowfish, the H.O.R.D.E. tour, Alanis Morissette, Melissa Etheridge and
the Dave Matthews Band all performing at the stadium or the pavilion. In all,
Hershey hosted 15 shows...(stuff deleted) ...here is our take on the season that
was:
Best Performance Of The Summer:
Melissa Etheridge led the pack by meeting the audience halfway. Midway into her
sassy set at the pavilion, Etheridge pranced out into the crowd, setting up shop
for a while on a stage on top of the stunned folks in the general admission
area.
Ok, this was way to lengthy so that's all folks...
P.S. to the Houstonians - just rec'd an announcement about Melissa's Texas
tour package... How'd you *babes* like to play hostess to a PA yankee on
November 18th?

Hello everyone,
It's been a while since I've been on the list, I went to France this
summer and am now just getting back on in time to see Melissa in concert
on Sunday!!!! For those who don't know, and I'm sure they are few, she is
playing in Toledo, OH.
So how many people from the list are going? I feel like I am the only
Melissa fan in NW OH, especially male. Please let me know that i'm not
all alone.
Also, I wanted to let everyone know that when I was in France, I got
this awesome bootleg of ME. I forget the name of it but it was done on
the OXY label and is from her VH-I duets show. The quality and look of
the CD looks almost better than something than Island would put out!!
One mistake on the CD is that for "St. Theresa" they called it "Sing to
Lisa." The inside cover is really cool as well, there are some neat
pictures of ME and some cool quotes. Sometime when I get a chance, I'll
post the quotes.
I also in France I got a cool Maxi-Single of YLS w/ a couple live
tracks. Then I also got a bootleg at the CD store that I work at here
called "She's the Boss" which is from her MTV unplugged album. This
sounds pretty good.
Well that's enough for one post, I'm just really happy to be back!

The other thing is has she ever had an opening act with her on this

Some one mentioned the other day about the article in the OZ magazine about
LDP comments about melissa...and yes sirree...they certainly are
there...phew...we ran to the magazine rack to read it when I caught sight of
the headline from across the room (Sounds like a really bad romance
novel)..ANYWAY..it has an interview with him talking about how MElissa and
Julie became good FRIENDS and he thought NOTHING of them going out on the
town together ALL the time. THEN, she told him she wanted out because she
didn't LOVE him but someone else. BUT it wasn't until later that he found
out Melissa was the OTHER person. He was SHOCKED. Because he didn't marry a
LESBIAN. And was going to quietly SIT in the corner and get OVER it until
M&J went PUBLIC about it all and suddenly everyone in the school yard was
TAUNTING him about it and saying stuff like 'WOW you must be really BAD in
BED'..and 'DID you know she was GAY' and he took it for AGES and no longer
is going TO. SOOOOOO, he's know giving REALLY bad interviews about it.
(BTW..we put the magazine back) (Must have been GOOD).
And while we are in this capital letter KINDA mood...RUN...DON'T WALK...AS
FAST AS YOU CAN TO THE...(drum roll please) BRAND SPANKING NEW ...
SISTABLUE ... WEB PAGE. (Phew, I'm exhausted)(You know, that really GREAT
duo from Perth??) (DO the words wank wank mean anything here?)
But you can see pictures (wave at us in front of your PC screens) (yeah
right) and download sound from our almost released cd...and well, that's
about it...BORING as hell, but hey...I have hair.
It is at

Yeah, that interview with Lou Diamond Phillips was in very poor taste, but
hey, it was accompanied by a pic of MLE and Julie that I didn't already
have so I could ignore the article and just cut out the picture. I hope
the mag just made up the interview because if poor Lou is really worried
about how Hollywood must all think he's so bad in bed now because he lost
his wife to a lesbian (an absolutely gorgeous one at that) then god help
him....

What a nice post...congratulations to the both of you! Goddess bless the

I haven't had a chance to post here lately, but I was wondering about that
Springsteen show-up a week or so ago..are there tapes floating around of
this? Must have been a great show! Which songs did they do together?
On the Ellen topic.. I can only begin to imagine the pressure she must be
under from the media circus.. I actually feel bad for Ellen. On Leno last
night, Jay set her up to make her big announcement, which they fake-snowed
out..then said: there..now you know..enough already, basically. It was
funny, and I was relieved she didn't dredge up the Lebanese thing again..
Hope she can hang with it..its my favorite show! Whoever that was that
suggested an Ellen mailing list, please let me know if its happening!
Keep those concert reviews coming..they're great!

Subject: Columbus Concert Review
Howdy, all,
I'm pooped! Got home last night at 1:00 but was still so wound up I didn't
drift off until after 2:00. Then I had to be up at 5:30 because of an 8am
class,....and....well....my students told me I'm rather babbling today.
But!!! I made it to the front row last night and Melissa touched my hand at
the end of the concert!! That was kind of cool. I really liked how she
makes a point of getting to *everybody* in the front row.....people behind me
were pushing forward, cramming several of us into a bank of speakers...and
Melissa was saying gently, "Wait. Wait. Wait," letting people know that she
would get to them.
Lessee...the set list has been posted a zillion times and was the same,
except for the fact that here, Melissa added Mercedes Benz during her set on
the small stage in the back. As usual in Columbus, that was a great treat.
Melissa was in an excellent mood! It was her cameraman's birthday, so she
made a point of wishing him a happy birthday...um.....she told a great
Leavenworth story about Shriner's Park being so poorly lit, ahem, that it was
the perfect setting for young romance, etc. Melissa also made a comment
about OSU being a great football team this year, but since I went to Penn
State, I will not comment upon this at this time.
Melissa was just really *up* and this was reflected in her performance. The
person I was with insisted it topped her show at Polaris in Columbus last
year, and I am inclined to agree (much to my surprise, because I'm not a huge
fan of much of the material on YLS). And I saw Melissa at the Fleet Center
in August and was kind of let down then. But really she came alive last
night...but perhaps things just seemed so much more intense because I was
able to get so close this time around.
See, I started off the concert right by accident in the 5th row meeting up
with some MElisters (hi, Sue! Hi, Michelle!); my MEIN tickets had me in the
15th row. (Not too bad, anyway). But since I was there in the 5th row, and
there were some empty seats, I just went back to the 15th row, grabbed the
friend who was with me, and we charged back up to the 5th row. Eventually
the latecomers showed up, but we were all on our feet anyway, so we all just
squeezed in amiably and stayed, dancing, where we were.
There was only one moment of tension during the concert, when, back at the
small stage, one woman attempted to climb onto the stage, but a group of
people pulled her back down into the crowd. Then Melissa spotted a guy with
one of those disposable cameras near this woman. She took the guy's camera
and took a few pictures of the band and then held her arm out, pointing the
camera at herself, and took a snap or two. Then she gave the camera back to
the guy. He, needless to say, looked pretty excited. (I wonder if those
pictures will actually turn out?
