The poll states that 72% of adults would not be offended if a TV show's lead character were gay. But 40% of 1,003 adults polled believe Ellen would lose viewers if it happens on that show (margin of error 3.1 percentage points). I think it's very funny how easy it is for some people in this country to assume that money is the answer to all things good and evil and that it naturally offers a grandiose supply of every comfort, desire and pleasure place we could want for, including a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP. Geez! Wake up and smell the real world PALEEZZ!! Support and love are the true foundations of what a healthy adult relationship is all about. NOT about how many toys you had as a child, whether you were driven to school in a jaguar, where you lived, or even whether you went to a community college or Harvard. Sure, there are diff. social classes, sure there are diff. levels of education, but PLEASE don't preach that without the best of these things one can't function as well in an adult relationship because THEN I must ask, "If I weren't able to afford a computer in my home, or hadn't graduated with honors from college, would I be any less able to love my husband? or FUNCTION in society as you say?" Besides, last I checked, all of my very rich friends were so insecure they couldn't even tie their own shoes without daddy's approval, or they were being disowned because they didn't date a certain TYPE, I mean come on. I don't post often, but I think I'm going to burst if I don't tell someone about this show. Just got back from seeing MLE in Milwaukee. It was the best show I've ever seen in my life (2nd time seeing her). Melissa was her usual, put-on-a-helluva-show-for-'em self. The Bradley Center was only maybe 1/3 full, Melissa said early on, "so you must be the people who couldn't get tickets to Bruce's show." Unbeknownst to me (I had driven up from Chicago to see her) Springsteen was playing at another venue tonight as well. But I guess he must've finished early (more on that later....) Y'all know the set list by now; the order's a bit different for the second leg of the tour, but the songs are the same. Our seats were about halfway back on the main floor -- right next to the "satellite stage." Thanks to you all, I'd been warned ahead of time, so we were right on top of it by the time she got back there to rip into the second part of the show. (Quick fashion report: black t-shirt, faded denim w/purple velvet swirly designs, the ubiquitous black pants and fake-snakeskin Doc Martens) Shook John's hand as he came on. I'm normally a somewhat reserved person, but when it comes to MLE concerts, I have no shame. I screamed and danced and generally went nuts the whole time. I still can't believe I was literally a foot from her. Hell, we could read the little tape on the back of the Ovations that said "Main" and F.O.H (what does that mean??) I shook ME's hand as she left, and I got a guitar pick!! After they got back to the main stage and she finished up her first encore (LTWID, of course) she went to introduce the next song (I'm sorry, I really don't remember what she said, I was too in awe) and the next thing I know, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN is on stage with her and they're singing Pink Cadillac. I saw Melissa and Bruce sing together, LIVE!!! I'm still trying to get over this one, folks. Was anyone else there?? I didn't see any bowling shirts. OK, I'll shut up now. For those of you who aren't familiar with Much Music's (Canada's version of MTV) programming, "Spotlight" is a half-hour focus on an artist's videos. For the more prominent artists, the coverage is spread over two days. As far as I can tell, this is the FIRST TIME Melissa has had *two* spotlights! Anyway.............. Tailgate report--Good time was had by all. Most of us met as planned (Kelley, where were you?), I think we had about 15 people show up. Pictures should be available soon. Concert report--Did I hear someone say this woman can *Rock*? St. Louis was blown away. Melissa came on stage about 8:10, and continued for (about) 3 hours. My MEIN tickets were in row 22, but when she went to the back stage, I went up to the front and staked a claim at the stage. Through the show, she talked about her St. Louis connections--her dad was from here, and they came "to the big city" a lot to see her relatives. She told us that if people here said they were related to her, they probably are. She also kept us updated on the baseball game (which, when St. Louis is winning, is always good for a five minute ovation), and talked about how her dad had tried out for the Cardinals (ok, St. Louis is very much a baseball town, and this kind of stuff goes over really well). Obligatory fashion report--blue denim shirt over a black t-shirt, and black stretch knit (?) pants (I touched them and still don't have a clue). She was definitely not having a bad hair day--she looked great. Shanks was in my face a lot more than Melissa, but I did get to shake both their hands. I didn't get any guitar picks, 'though. I can't wait to get to Chicago next week to see her again--the only problem is.....how will I know of any lister get togethers if I don't have access to my e-mail????? I must say, it's usually the Americans who are game enough to try it, and too stubborn to admit it's the foulest thing they've ever put on their toast :D One time we had 3 young men from Kentucky, one of whom thought the vegemite was Nutella, and very enthusiastically spread it on his toast. You can just imagine the expression on hisface ;-) I gave him credit, as he ate it all, and you wouldn't even see ME eating toast with THAT much vegemite on it!!! Couldn't help but give the poor guy hell for the rest of the day. Over the course of the year, we ended up going to a number of other concerts together -- MLE (31 January), Joan Osborne, Nathalie Merchant, Alanis Morrissette, Tracy Chapman, k d lang, Ani di Franco, MLE (with Bryan Adams), Dar Williams, and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. Well, you can guess the rest. We found out that we had a lot in common beyond shared musical tastes, and, to paraphrase Emily,"that was the beginning of the rest of our lives". Those listers who made it to the January list gathering might remember that Sarah was married at the time. After getting a call on the big white clue-phone, Sarah realised that there might be a connection between her undying passion for MLE, problems in her marriage, and some related issues. After several months of soul-searching, she and Gordon (who's a great guy, actually) split up, and are in the process of getting divorced. It hasn't been an easy or painless decision, but it seems to be the right one. Now we're sharing a postal code (NW3) and a CD collection. No cats so far, though. :( Just another illustration of how powerful this list is in providing somewhere for people to meet & get to know each other. I forget the name of it but it was done on the OXY label and is from her VH-I duets show. The quality and look of the CD looks almost better than something than Island would put out!! One mistake on the CD is that for "St. Theresa" they called it "Sing to Lisa." The inside cover is really cool as well, there are some neat pictures of ME and some cool quotes. Sometime when I get a chance, I'll post the quotes. I also in France I got a cool Maxi-Single of YLS w/ a couple live tracks. Then I also got a bootleg at the CD store that I work at here called "She's the Boss" which is from her MTV unplugged album. This sounds pretty good. Got home last night at 1:00 but was still so wound up I didn't drift off until after 2:00. Then I had to be up at 5:30 because of an 8am class,....and....well....my students told me I'm rather babbling today. But!!! I made it to the front row last night and Melissa touched my hand at the end of the concert!! That was kind of cool. I really liked how she makes a point of getting to *everybody* in the front row.....people behind me were pushing forward, cramming several of us into a bank of speakers...and Melissa was saying gently, "Wait. Wait. Wait," letting people know that she would get to them. Lessee...the set list has been posted a zillion times and was the same, except for the fact that here, Melissa added Mercedes Benz during her set on the small stage in the back. As usual in Columbus, that was a great treat. Melissa was in an excellent mood! It was her cameraman's birthday, so she made a point of wishing him a happy birthday...um.....she told a great Leavenworth story about Shriner's Park being so poorly lit, ahem, that it was the perfect setting for young romance, etc. Melissa also made a comment about OSU being a great football team this year, but since I went to Penn State, I will not comment upon this at this time. Melissa was just really *up* and this was reflected in her performance. The person I was with insisted it topped her show at Polaris in Columbus last year, and I am inclined to agree (much to my surprise, because I'm not a huge fan of much of the material on YLS). And I saw Melissa at the Fleet Center in August and was kind of let down then. But really she came alive last night...but perhaps things just seemed so much more intense because I was able to get so close this time around. See, I started off the concert right by accident in the 5th row meeting up with some MElisters (hi, Sue! Hi, Michelle!); my MEIN tickets had me in the 15th row. (Not too bad, anyway). But since I was there in the 5th row, and there were some empty seats, I just went back to the 15th row, grabbed the friend who was with me, and we charged back up to the 5th row. Eventually the latecomers showed up, but we were all on our feet anyway, so we all just squeezed in amiably and stayed, dancing, where we were. There was only one moment of tension during the concert, when, back at the small stage, one woman attempted to climb onto the stage, but a group of people pulled her back down into the crowd. Then Melissa spotted a guy with one of those disposable cameras near this woman. She took the guy's camera and took a few pictures of the band and then held her arm out, pointing the camera at herself, and took a snap or two. Then she gave the camera back to the guy. He, needless to say, looked pretty excited. (I wonder if those pictures will actually turn out? ) And John Shanks is a big flirt! He was making some great eye contact with an attractive young woman next to me (this was towards the concert's end, when we were in the front, on the right hand side of the stage near where Mark Browne was). Every time John looked at her, she would collapse in giggles against her boyfriend, who was getting just as big a kick out of John's flirtations as she. I have to admit, even though I'm gay, John is really quite an attractive man and looks great in leather pants. At one other point, Melissa was playing around with her cameraman, getting right up in his face and making funny expressions. A woman behind me suddenly yelled: "You ham!" This was rather cute. Well, these are all my memories for now. See, I have babbled on again. Pooh, it was great to meet you....but sorry our tailgate fell through. To explain: we didn't realize the Convention Center had more than one lot. I was in one place; Pooh in another. So, Pooh has a truckload of Jello shots; I have a cooler with a case of beer in my car. There was food (what were the ingredients in those nachos, anyway?) there was fun. There were YLS album flats raffled off (and one of the winners picked her own name . . . hmmm. . . ) and the "Run Baby Run" boot was played ad nauseum (I think someone hit repeat and forgot about it). There were geography lessons mixed with algebra word problems (if you leave Albany at 1:00, travelling east at 55 miles an hour. . .). Pictures were taken and pictures were seen, (cute children in said pictures were ogled). There were discussions of grammar, horoscopes (I found out my sign - I never knew!), and the secret identity of a former MELister was revealed (though I'm not telling!). We found out that I spend a great deal of time near Gwen Shinko's former home, and that Beth Durff *walked* in front of and behind my house and admired it less than a week ago without either of us knowing it! We all marvelled at what a cute couple Gwen and Jen make (and the rhyming names don't hurt). And then, just to cap it all off and make the evening complete, I punched Elaine Naiman in the nose. And that's all true. And it was all over too quickly, with everyone returning to their separate corners of the world. I climbed into my ugly rented family Buick (an appropriate car for a granny, but not a "groovy granny") and followed Beth Durff (who honestly looks just like Ellen DeGeneres with dark hair - not Demi Moore, Gwen!) all the way to Frederick, then proceeded onto I-70, where I promptly blew out a tire on said ugly rental Buick and had to sit on the side of the road frightened of psychopaths until a nice state trooper came to my rescue. (I was never so glad to see a trooper in my rearview mirror!) But that did not sully my memory of a great evening. As I said, a DC Lister New Year's Party is already in the planning stages for my new digs (the yuppie box) in Laurel - (yes, you can come all the way up to Laurel from Virginia!) more on that after I finally move. MEIN provided me with 2nd row center. I was quite pleased to say the least. Being that close was the best part of this show. I've been close but I've never had her head in my face as my hand is on her back until now. But more about that later.... The songs were pretty much the same. All of YLS, CTMW, ITOO, IIWT, SL, AAG, Resist, YIA from YIA, and MMITB, LMG, BMSW and LTWID from the other CDs. The sound was HORRIBLE. That pretty much ruined the show for me. I don't know how it was in back, but in the first few rows, you couldn't hear her voice or 12 string very well. She needs a sound man who understands stadiums. It was very dissappointing and everyone was talking about it. >From YLS, I thought NTG, SP and YLS all were great live. The version of ITOO was outstanding. During LTWID, she came down and leaned into me (and about 100 other people, but I rushed the stage first so I was in front) and I pretty much had the top of her head in my face and my hand on her back and a ton of hands reaching around me grabbing her. It was pretty cool. I thought the songlist was dissapointing. You would think she would throw the long time fans at least one rarely sung old song like PP or LSD. YLS is not a strong enough CD to sing every song from it and she's kidding herself if she thinks it is. The big successful stadium acts I've seen the last few years sing about 1/2 to 2/3 of their new CD but also add alot of old stuff. It was the most pure rock show I've seen her do. Very few slow songs and YIA was the only one done acoustically. Kenny Arnoff (sp) is an incredible addition to the band and I would be quite happy to be carried off stage by both him and Shanks and..... :-) ME looked great. Leather pants, black tshirt and blue jean shirt over the t-shirt. She looks like she's gained a little weight but I'm sure the road isn't the best for eating well. Her smile thoughout the show was very real, though she didn't seem to interact as much with the fans as she used to. She ignored things that people brought to her on stage. She used to always acknowledge gifts. The Tribune reported that she is definately playing Joplin in a movie to be made next summer. Also, I heard that in Milwakee, Bruce joined her onstage and they did Pink Cadillac. I hadn't heard that here. I've been looking forward to this since I first hear that Rosie was going to have a show, how frustrating! -- Deb \\ [email protected] \\ http://www.clark.net/pub/indigo ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 10:21:01 -0400 From: "A.D.Eder" Subject: toledo concert report hello to all, just thought i would de-lurk to report on the ME toledo concert, that was sunday oct 13....IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!!!! my second time seeing ME and it was as good as good gets....her voice was so strong, so sensual, her music so full of passion...every moment was totally captivating! it was a very small venue, maybe about 1500 people, at the univ of toledo, no doubt i was one of her oldest fans there....actually drove an hour and a half from michigan...but it was a good crowd, totally into her! the song list was the same as has been mentioned for other recent concerts, but i must say...when she did "silent legacy"...and went down on that guitar...wow....i melted...and IWTCO....words fail to decribe how sexy she does that....and then there was a blues tune that was tough as hell...each song was done with her exquisite intensity...playing for 2 and a half hours...fashion report...black pants, black t-shirt, blue denim shirt over the t......the whole band was fantastic each being superb at their craft.....could have listened for at least two more hours...it's "never enough"..ME also did the small back stage thing for 4 songs...the whole band on this tiny little platform...just totally great...did 2 encores...LTWID, then TWIO...she had to be totally wiped out, what a woman!!!!!what an artist, so professional, so incredibly great....it was wonderful....once again...i willl never be the same...WOW! and that's it in a nutshell...peace...andrea ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Oct 1996 10:55:29 -0400 From: KELLY CONROY Subject: Re: MLETHER Digest - 12 Oct 1996 to 13 Oct 1996 To all of the gals who went to the gathering- You were such an inspiration to me. From the quilt to the momentous evening candlelight vigil, to the taste of DC to the crowds! God, what an incredible amount of support and love and positiveness. I, unfortunately, was unable to get to DC to see the quilt 8-( But, I had a good weekend with my ex-ex. I think it is now safe to say that I have a PIP again! Couple of questions/comments. First, the single by Bryan Adams with Melissa - is this the same song that he did back in the 80s with Tina Turner? If so, I don't know why he is rereleasing it but at least Melissa can do it justice. (not many people can take Tina's place!) Next, about the xfiles cd - personally, I wouldn't waste money on it. I love the show, but am not impressed with the 'soundtrack' - the only song worth listening to is the one by PM Dawn - in my opinion! Finally, how many of you have seen the new look for Reba McEntire? Didn't like it at first, but it has grown on me. Love the new song though! She did a pretty good job of covering all of the highlights, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents... Tracey did do the macarena - a seated version - several times....but she was just too darned fast to be documented on film. Yes, there were geography lessons mixed with algebra word problems (if you leave Albany at 1:00, travelling east at 55 miles an hour. . .). BUT if we can't pass an *English* test, how do you think we did on the other problems? Weirdest moment: I was in Pittsburgh a week ago on business, but I also did some sightseeing. Now wait - that's not the weird part okay? I'm getting to that part...
