Well, *my* favorite interpretation is that it's about MLE's first (and
only?) um.. "experience" with a man, which would explain why the kiss is so
unusual. The "we ALL wanted this" I interpret as refering to society as a
whole, basically MLE is saying "look, you all want me to be straight, to do
this, so look, here I'm doing it -- there, are you satisfied?!?!". And I
say it's MLE in the taxi, and the guy (who she sarcastically calls her
"baby") inside the house, drawing the shades.

ELLEN DEGENERES ("Ellen") is going to "come out" on her April 30 show
with the help of OPRAH, who will play the part of her therapist.(Enquirer)
Thoughts:
1) That sounds like a boring way to declare you're a lesbian to me. I have a
better idea for a more interesting plot: set up an episode where Ellen is
dating Lou Diamond Phillips. Then, after sleeping with him, show Ellen becoming
more and more dissatisfied. Then, finally, have special guest star Melissa
Etheridge enter the scene and sweep Ellen off her feet. I like the idea, but do
you think people would find such a storyline believable?
2) If the whole lesbian thing doesn't work out, do you think in a few months
from now Ellen could do a "Dallas" scene where she wakes up to find a guy in
the shower and realizes the last few months have been just a beautiful lesbian
dream?

Hey Shirl, I don't think John *answered* your question....I wanna know too!

So...Shirl.....the Curl Girl....what's this "quiet & reserved" crap anyway?
You're not foolin' *anybody,* missy! ;) Ha! Methinks you're most likely
partying down with your new electronics AND your toasts with Ms. Stewart!!
Speaking of which, Rebecca Barrick & I initiated the very first

Aaron Morrison staggered my perceptions and punctured by

Wow...WOW!!! Ya know, as much as we beat this horse to death during last
year's formal debate, I don't recall ever reading or even entertaining THIS
possibility!! Now, I think this
theory of yours, Aaron, holds a lot of promise...certainly a lot of merit!
And it is *completely* in tandem with Melissa's rare comments about AUK and
her conspicuously persistent refusal to discuss it! Imagine if she ever
dropped something on her image like "BTW, I had a thing with a man and just
wanted to share it in detail with you"!!
I'm gonna quote Joyce Luck's excerpt of an interview that triggered the
whole big '96 debate....underscoring the fact that *Melissa* started this
darn thing with her own coyness about it!! I think it fits Aaron's theory
(quoted here without permission from Ms. Luck, so please send all royalties
which you may gain directly to Joyce ):

Subject: An Unusual Kiss
Howdy, folks,
Came across this snippet in a Q and A type of interview published in the
November 3, 1995 issue of *The Album Network.* Don't recall seeing it
here....the the entire article is on pages 24 and 25.
Q: Those of us who have followed you from day one know that there's a certain
part of you in every one of your songs, so what are we to make of the song,
"Unusual Kiss?"
A: Well, I'll tell you what. With this album I'm going to start something
new where I say, "Yes, each of these songs is a part of me, each of these
songs comes from a real honest place, but I'm not gonna tell you what it's
about. There's just too bright of a light shown upon my personal life that
it's like, 'Uh-uh...you have to guess from now on.'"
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Q: [What is] your biggest secret?
A: I don't have any. I guess "Unusual Kiss" is my biggest secret, now. I
mean, there are aspects that I have tried to . . . you just don't want
everybody knowing everything about you. I have to keep some things private,
but there isn't any terribly horrible, big secret that I've got. I'm just
not that good at hiding things.
ACK! I was *not* curious about this song AT ALL until
now. Drat! What a *&^%$^& tease!
Later,
Joyce
---------<>---------
Hmm....I really have to ponder this whole notion
now that Aaron's so succinctly brought it up. It's an incredibly common and
extant reality that lesbians have or have had sexual experiences with men,
so it sure wouldn't surprise me if MLE's got hers but doesn't want to
discuss them with the world at large.
OK, humor me here...I just gotta throw in one of my favorite posts of all
time, and it's on this subject of AUK...I remember how hard I laughed when I
first read this one (and am I terribly surprised?...It's from our very own
*rhonnda*! )

Today is the day that Mel arrives (Yipee!) and our itinerary for this week
(evenings) is as follows for those who wish to join in (please e-mail me
privately for further details or directions to any of the locations).
Monday - J.R. (my Jeep) takes the stage for a driving tour of the Windy city
and then off to our welcoming dinner in Greek town, The Parthenon (314 S.
Halsted) - OPA!!!! (mandatory Mean Earthlings/People Suck toast).
Tuesday - Chicago-style pizza/Sam Adams party at the Lone Wrangler's beach
front condo, with a special viewing of a 1993 MLE concert in Germany (Thank
you oh so much John, and yes, Shirl, it just won't be the same as that first
viewing with you and SueD, I miss you too ;] ).
Wednesday - Gunther Murphy's (1653 W. Belmont) for the Cornbugs/Julips (for
those of you in Chicago, this is a local favorite, Cathy Richardson's, side
band/project with members of her band, as well as members of The Insiders).
Thursday - Our farewell party :( starting at Bub City for dinner then off to
either Paris Dance (1122 W. Montrose) or Winners (4530 N. Lincoln) for the
final Mean Earthlings/People Suck toasts (SueD, Patti, Shirl and any others,
I'm counting on those cyber/phone toasts).
I guess in keeping up with the Stormy Leather BAB tour, I should keep a
time slot allotted for a trip to The Pleasure Chest, an establishment that
would definitely give Stormy Leather a run for the money. Hope to see some
of you this week.

Subject: *etheridge* Look what ABC is doing
ABC is expected to announce March 5 that it will go forward with an
episode of "Ellen'' in which the lead character reveals she's a lesbian. The
outing of Ellen Morgan, played by Ellen DeGeneres, will air on April 30, as
previously reported here.
Final casting wasn't complete Friday, but sources say Oprah Winfrey
will play the thearapist to who Ellen admits her homosexuality.
Producers of the series submitted the script to show producer Disney
two weeks ago and it was then turned in to ABC for approval.
With the telecast, "Ellen' will become the first network television
program with a lesbian lead character.
No dummies, ABC is airing the show in the first week of the May
seeps, a gquarterly ratings period used to set future advertising rates.
Even though ratings for the show should soar, ABC's decision to move
forward with the storyline will likely cause some advertisers to drop out of
the program, fearing a backlash from consurmers and conservative watchdogs.
The issue of Elleln Morgan's sexual orientation has been percolating
the past few months since word leaked out that DeGeneres and show producers
were hoping to convince the network to allow them to make the revelation.

I caught on CNN last night while flipping channels a short blurb on a gay
and lesbian awards ceremony (which I forget the name), where Ellen gave KD
Lang an "passionate kiss" at the podium. And that was all they mentioned
about the awards. The piece lasted about 10 seconds.
That just seems like it was an "unfair" coverage to only talk about that
particular segment (which I have to admit *is* interesting) but to ONLY
present that part doesn't seem to portray a very good image... to a random
uneducated heterosexual.
Just a thought.

I'm amused by the term 'leaked'... I suspect the entire topic has been
carefully orchestrated, though perhaps that's just a reflection of my
cynical view of the entertainment 'biz'... :)
For those of you following *all* the tangents of this story... several
U.S. newspapers today printed a photo (from AP wire services) of Ellen
Degeneres and k d lang kissing, in what one newspaper called a 'full
passionate embrace'... there was no explanation of the *context* of the
kiss, though it appears to be at the podium in front of some significant
event, probably related to the 10-second CNN clip of the awards show which
Roger Zender wrote about today.

LOL! The only reason my 'BAB tour' gets any attention has nothing to do
with *me*, and everything to do with *location*... San Francisco offers
something for everyone's tastes... the fact that we visit leather shops
and 'toy' stores is just coincidental... :)
Patty continued:
>We'll do our best to keep you "amused"
Since I'm a Chicago native, I know the city has much to offer (besides
extreme weather), and having met Patty (what a sweetheart!), I'm sure
she knows what to include in an entertaining tour... even Susie Bright
(at whose feet I have twice knelt ) was impressed with what Chicago
has to offer.
Patty added:

Misleading? You mean Mel is *not* quiet, reserved, shy, demure, etc???
Gee! She always seems quiet, reserved, etc to me... even when she's in
my apartment wrestling with a certain BABer (who I will *not* name ).
----
Shirl added to the subject of tours and such:
>Nothing like a tour starting at Stormy Leather, John did you ever get
>that frequent buyer card completely punched?
LOL! Yes, though my frequent buyer card is not for Stormy Leather, as
it only sells leatherwear for women... not much there for men unless you
include the saddles, bridles/bits, and riding crops .
My frequent-buyer card is for the *second* stop on the BAB tour... a store
called Good Vibrations. You only get frequent-buyer points for purchasing
*certain* items. :)
----
Patti Fink asked me about frequent-buyer credits:

I wish! If they gave me credit for all the business I've brought them
I wouldn't have to buy anything from them for years... last time I went
there (by myself), one of the clerks asked "John, when are you going to
bring us more women?"
Re: the "ever-changing entourage of women" comment...
Gee... what must y'all be thinking... we have over two dozen MLE-listers
living in the Bay Area who have delurked enough to ask to be included in
BAB tours/parties/newsletter/etc... I'm the only guy in the bunch .
It's a tough job but somebody has to do it .

Hi,
Did you all see the photo of kd and Ellen in today's USA today? If you
didn't here is the quote under the picture to give you an idea.
"Ellen DeGeneres passionately kissed k.d. lang after giving an award at
Saturday night's L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center's Women's Night. The lengthy
embrace between the openly gay singer and the TV actress comes as reports
are surfacing that DeGeneres' TV character will come out of the closet as a
gay person this spring"
It's kind of like peeking in at a very private moment.
I can't buy the guy idea of AUK. Melissa has said in several interviews
that she was very promiscuous in her early twenties with a lot of
girlfriends. I also don't see the secrecy in her and Julie's first kiss or
night together. Wouldn't it be interesting between feedings that she is
reading all this speculation and ROTFL.

>The VH1 Weekly Program Schedule - all times are Eastern/Pacific Time

>airing any day of the week!
btw, the VH1 site is rather misleading. i checked "TV week", the
weekly insert included with the sunday s.f chronicle, and all of the
times listed on VH1's site do not match "TV week". you have to bump
everything back 3 hours. so, IOW...
Saturday, March 8th - for BAB'ers (and i'm assuming all other west
coasters, too):
6:30 AM - 7:00 AM Pop-Up Video #11
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM All-Star Garage Band Jam for City of Hope
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Garage Band Heroes Hour 1
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Garage Band Heroes Hour 2
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM All-Star Garage Band Jam for City of Hope
3:30 PM - 4:00 PM Pop-Up Video #6
the VH1 listing in the "TV week" grid ends at 6 pm (and i think most
bay area cable systems end their VH1 broadcasts at 4 pm anyway), so i
can't confirm the rest of the times. please check your local
listings to be sure.
if i recall correctly, i believe that the VH1 site said that the
All-Star Garage Band is being shown a few times on march 9th, too.
btw, the billboard article excerpt that i posted a few weeks ago
about this all star garage band also said that it was going to be
simulcast on the radio. anyone hear anything further about that?

during the day so she can tape it! :-)

We are invinsible when youth is our friend. No flood or wind or dark of

Okay, y'all- I just ran downstairs and bought a USA Today and there's
no picture of Ellen and kd. What gives? Is it a regional thing or
something? There *is* an article about Ellen's "coming out" in it,
but it just has a couple of generic pictures of her. Maybe it's a

It's okay to print stuff about the Oklahoma bombing and Timothy

and all that stuff, but 2 women kissing? Forget it- it's just too
inflammatory! :-p
So, here's my next question- Where on the Net can I go to see this

Please

Subject: *etheridge* Missing E shots
Well, Patti has been prolific of late, now she has broken down and confessed
her fondness for cyber(anything) including shots.
>Wow....never thought I'd end up as this year's poster child for "Friends
>Don't Let Friends Drink and Type"!
If I harken back to the night of the Dallas concert, I do remember a certain
voiceless fan kicking up her heels to the tune of "Lets Give Them Something
to Type About". So....you should have some practice on that ratty little
keyboard of yours.
As to shots, I'm glad you resurrected the Missing E shot. Our barkeep
friends must think we have deserted them. Never fear, this might take some
creative drinking, er, um I meant thinking (yeah, thats it). The Baileys
sounds good, cold coffee....hmmm, hidden under a layer of Baileys it just
might be drinkable (but it still makes me shudder). Although not
specifically mentioned in any songs, we know that Our Lady has a fondness for
Tequila. But then again, that deserves a special place in our hearts for the
traditional Mean People Suck Toasts. No gin, no gin, no gin. Just have the
bottle sitting on the side. Throw something red in there to represent
Strawberry wine...mangos we reserve for more, shall we say, hedonistic
pursuits:)
And, congrats go out to our not so shy and demure girl Shirl. She has title
to the infamous Z car now. Can't wait to go topless in that again. Now she
has promised to put a rainbow Melissa symbol on the bumper and I've been
egging her into a vanity plate with SHYNDMUR or DEMURE1. That way we can
spot her in all 50 states and Canada too. Phone shots tonight are definitely
in order. Lets all raise a glass of my favorite poison, Sauza Conmemorativo
(yup, the spelling is right, took it right off the bottle perched invitingly
next to me).
Before I snag Patti's title of cybershot typist, I'm outta here.
Enjoy all, SueD

Good morning, all!
I'm sorry (though not surprised) to say that America Online is having some
mail problems at the time. Consequently, I have been receiving just *some*
of the posts from this list but not all. (It's rather weird to read someone
saying, "in answer to so-and-so's post about blah blah blah"....and I never
got so-and-so's post about blah blah blah.)
Anyway, so if anybody on this list is sending email to people on AOL and the
person has not responded, don't take it personally. Probably they never got
your mail. You might want to try them again....and again....and again....
and again.... ;-)
Ah, a reminder! Let's all not forget Melissa on Vh-1 tonight. It's at 8
(Vh1-o-1) and 8:30 (videos) EST, right?
Later,
Joyce

I wholly disagree with Aaron Morrison's interpretation of AUK. If this
song is so sexual that she and Julie don't wanna talk about it, it has
to be more than sex with a man. No offense intended. But a 3-way is IMHO
more about sex, and less socially acceptable to talk about. And Melissa
did say she "ran the bases" in High school, or jr. high, or something,
and it was no big deal. But when she kissed a woman, she realized
WOW!That's it. (Paraphrasing). I relate, as I did the same thing, was
with a male in high school, peer pressure etc. But when I fell in love
and made love with a woman (can I say that here?), WWWOOOWW!!! Only one
other thing in my life has been so eye opening. And there's no going
back to men, for me, why bother now that I know my true orientation? I
have male friends who I love dearly (is that like saying "some of my
best friends are men?" ;-) ), but I don't wanna have sex with them. Not
even curious, cuz I've been there. -marcy

Hello Melisters!
Just a moment for pondering. I think we all look or a need to head for
higher ground.
Be it from fear of the land beneath our feet slowly slipping away or be
it that a landslide knocks us to our feet.
Higher ground be it by music from our favorite goddess of rock!
Or be it higher ground from cloudwalking and star gazing.
Let us lift up the lost ones who have lost all hope and are fighting
the sadness in their souls. Lift them up to the stars above and give
them a ray of hope in the darkness that surrounds them.
Let us take off the shoes we know so well as comforting and walk in the
shoes of the less fortunate.
Ohio has vast devastation from flooding, Arkansas from tornados and in
my little corner of the world it is the eyes that touch the heart and
soul.
Give today of yourself be it by a greeting, smile or gesture.
Sometimes hope is all there is. Spread the seeds of love and
friendship.
Be thankful for your warmth and the shelter of your homes for there are
those who have not.
Know that we are a family and that we are connected somehow, someway in
the vast spectrum of life and that life is for sharing.
Believe in magic and hope will follow.
And always, yes always, beleive in the music!
Much Warmth,
"POOH"

we are going to distribute it in the US. Maybe for the BAB folks we could
send them all to say, John ? , (big smoochy wave!) and everyone can get them
from there?
Well, this has taken us a bit to get here, but we have a really cool video
as well and are hanging out to return to the US (crossing our fingers for
August). Seriously missing you all. We have also been trying to find an
agent that will handle our bookings etc in the US but we have been doing 4
shows a week over here and have been somewhat busy..mmm.
The official release of the cd here is April 11th and it looks like it will
be released in Europe as well...yahooo....we will also have a visa card
thingy set up soon for people who want to order it online. Okay? Okay.
And might I say, that I am very glad that the favourite list is back up and
running ...missed you guys!

laura (a/k/a [email protected]) asked me to post the following to
the list (and swears that she's gonna have to have the nice men
in white coats come for her tonight if she doesn't get her
computer working soon):
bailey jean: whose egg did she come from, melissa's or
julie's? logic would seem to dictate julie, but in that case
in the HIGHLY UNLIKELY (of course) event melissa
and julie were to go their separate ways, melissa would
have little, if any, legal rights of custody for bailey jean.
if julie's, melissa would have no physical role in b.j.'s
creation (which is perfectly fine, since she's going to
have a very large physical role in her upbringing).
just a thought to throw out here.
get back on line soon laura!

Aaack!! :-) Just a friendly reminder that including files of this
sort at the end of list posts can prove to be a nuisance for
some folks. As John Juan said, most of us end up with
'alphabet soup' that takes a while to download and then pull
up to read...and it can really play havoc with already large
digests.
Thanks!

Hi,
I took a little peek at the GLAAD site and they had several pages on the
"Women's Night"
One page was the winners of the auction. Melissa's autographed guitar went
for $15,025.00.
WOW! By the way, did anyone find a page on the net that had the picture of
kd and Ellen
kissing. I did a little searching, but couldn't find it anywhere.
Has anyone ever seen a video of the 1993 Voter's for Choice concert where
Melissa sang Pink Cadillac with Mary Chapin Carpenter? That would be a
real treat to see.

POP-ping in for a question or 2...
i know that VH1 replayed an interview with MLE last night and then
did a half hour video show. so, for those of us who are
VH1-in-the-evening-hours-impaired, what interview did they show and
what videos did they play? anything older than YIA?
p.s. now that the list is back up, i'll be continuing my YCSWID tour

downtime, and except for some fine tuning, they're mostly finished.
i'll be posting the rest of them every few days or so, so as not to
tax your patience. stay tuned for the sacramento report...

This hour was a bit of a disappointment. They played the VH1-to-One
interview in the first half hour. The second half was six (?) videos.
All from YIA and YLS.
Let's see... there was CTMW, YLS, IIWT, IWTCO, NTG (at least I finally
got a clean version of this) and oh yeah, they showed ITOO from
Storytellers. Think that's it.
Can't wait to read the reports!

Ellen did get moved to Tuesdays at 8:30, however only for two months.
I believe the coming out episode will be the first week that Ellen returns

Evenin', Melisters,
First off, a BIG BIG thank you to all the wonderful people who helped me
out on my last paper...the 'Homophobia and Society' one. Just got it back
today, and guess who got an **A**!?! All the suggestions really helped
get me on the right track, narrow down my focus, and organize my thoughts.
My second, and final term paper is due this Monday, so I thought I'd throw
the topic out there and see if I could spark anyone's interest...maybe
end up with a few suggestions...it sure worked last time!
The topic I'm focusing on this time is: The incidence of lesbian/gay male
parenting, and the primary concerns the homosexual person (or couple)
typically has in parenting a child.
I know it's not a *directly* related MLE topic...but definitely a
topic which has been given more attention lately, with the recent arrival
of little Bailey Jean!
Again, any input or suggestions would be more than welcome. I've got three
days to organize this mess of ideas in my head, and actually put it down
in writing :)
thanks so much,
becca.

Ellen DeGeneres will get a little help from her out-of-the-closet friends
when her character comes out as a lesbian. *TV Guide* reports that
singer and new mom Melissa Etheridge and recent Grammy winner k.d.
lang -- both leaders in the gay community -- will guest star on the
long-awaited, one-hour, very special coming-out episode of the ABC
sitcom "Ellen", which is set to air on April 30. The plan is for Etheridge to
perform with DeGeneres in the opening sequence of the show, which
changes from week to week. Lang will perform in the background
during a scene shot at Little Frida's, a popular lesbian coffeehouse in Los
Angeles. Etheridge and lang will join previously announced guest stars
Oprah Winfrey, who will play the therapist to whom DeGeneres's
character comes out to, and Laura Dern, who will play Ellen's love

Subject: *etheridge* YCSWID tour - 12/18 sacramento show
*tour recap*
the merry band of MLE fans (tim, jib, and rhondda) were halfway done
with their obsessive west coast tour, reaching this pinnacle after
attending the san francisco show the night before.
*morning*
we're getting a little too used to sleeping in. or was it just me who was
relishing every last second of shut-eye that i was getting in my very own
bed?
i was a little busy calling some friends to tell them about the wonderful
san francisco show the night before. i also made a point of calling
annalisa, the KFOG DJ who had given me the front row seats, to thank
her for the wonderful seats and compliment KFOG for sponsoring a
great show. i told her that the SF show was actually the 4th show i'd
seen on the tour, and that i was following MLE for the rest of her west
coast tour. she said, "oh, my god! well, i'm so glad that you won the
tickets!"
john called and told me that allison wanted to go to the leno show with
us. he gave me her phone numbers, so we left messages everywhere
and waited for her to return our call.
since she had never been to SF before, jib and i decided to hang out in
the city before heading to the sacramento show that evening. tim
decided to go to the arco arena right away, because he was going to
talk to MLE before the show started. we were very happy that he was
finally getting a chance to visit with MLE.
as we were running around getting ready, i popped the Much Music
SnowJob tape (which i'd received in a recent trade - thanks, cindy!) into
the VCR. i hadn't had a chance to watch it yet, although what i did see
was wonderful (i was in and out of the living room). what a great place
for a concert! got a quick glimpse of the back of joyce's and linda's
bowling shirts.
allison called back just before we left, so we traded physical
descriptions and made plans for meeting at the NBC studios for the leno
show taping on thursday afternoon.
*record store shopping*
jib mainly wanted to hit up some record stores before driving up to
sacramento, so i took her to my favorite local indie store on the
peninsula. damn! we almost had to rent a moving van to truck out all of
the loot that jib bought! how much MLE, pretenders, and bangles/hoffs
stuff does one need anyway?! ;-)
*on the way to SF*
we listened to KFOG on the way up to SF, just in case they said anything
about the concert. sure enough, they came through - fairly soon, they
played BMSW and IWTCO from the cow palace show. wow! it sounded
wonderful...and the crowd was really into BMSW. :-)
jib wanted to get some pictures of the cow palace as we drove
by (it's right off the 101), so she leaped into the back seat and got her
camera out of the trunk (quite a tricky maneuver). good thing i was
driving at the time!
i told jib to get ready to take more pictures, because the spectacular SF
skyline appears right after going around this stretch of 101 called
"hospital curve" (SF general hospital is right next to the freeway). there
wasn't a cloud in the sky, so the view was picture perfect.
*SF*
there wasn't really any time to do serious touristy-type activities,
especially considering that jib really just wanted to go to a few record
stores. i told her that we MUST drive over the golden gate bridge in the
very least, which we could do easily enough on the way to the show
later that afternoon.
we went to a couple of record stores on market street, near the castro.
i found a couple of copies of the 2001 promo, so i bought both of them. i
also bought the european version of U2's "boy" album on vinyl (the
original cover was changed for its U.S. release, because of the fear that
it might appeal to some prurient interests). jib purchased a few
things, too, but it was nothing compared to the haul she had made earlier.
*off to sacramento*
time was fleeting and rush hour was upon us, so we had to head off to
the sacramento show. we drove across the golden gate bridge into
marin county, where we hit some heavy commute traffic. we cut over
from 101 onto Hwy 37, and then connected with I-80. driving to
sacramento from SF usually takes about 2 hours, but it took us a little
longer since we left during rush hour and took a longer route.
as we got closer to sacramento, we hit some more thick fog (shades of
the drive to spokane!). it got worse the closer we got to the arco arena.
it got so bad that we couldn't figure out which way the venue was. we
got directions from somebody at a gas station, and finally found the
arena.
or should i say we found the *parking lot*? in actuality, once we parked
the car, we *still* couldn't see the damn arena through the soupy fog.
we just followed the crowd hoping that we were going in the right
direction, when suddenly the arena appeared! damn, where were they
hiding that thing?
*our seats*
after walking around most of the arena, trying to locate the elusive
will-call window, we picked up our MEIN tickets.
and for those keeping track:
sacramento MEIN seats - 11th row floor
*waiting*
when jib and i got to our seats, we ran into BAB'ers susan and
catherine, who told us that they had seen melanie (another BAB'er)
earlier (sorry we missed you, mel!!). then, tim came up, and he was
absolutely radiant, because he was finally able to talk to MLE before the
show and give her jesse's b-day CD-ROM. he told us how interested
MLE was in the CD-ROM, which was very cool. :-)
*the show*
while the arco arena was the biggest venue we had been to at this point
in the tour (it's even bigger than the cow palace), there were fewer
people in attendance than the SF show. the entire venue was used for
the show, but the whole upper section was curtained off.
7:30 show time, began at 7:45; show ended at 10:40
the 1st set and the encores were the same as the san francisco show.
the differences were the addition of the wild and crazy "John Shanks
Birthday Theme" every other song or so (in the 1st set and the B stage
set), the B stage set, and the addition of a snippet of "Love Me With A
Feeling" near the end of ITOO.
B stage (2nd set):
AIH
MMITB
Happy Birthday (twice)
LMG
ATWTH
Resist
main stage (3rd set):
ITOO/Love Me With A Feeling
*fashion report*
black leather pants, obligatory black T, denim overshirt with appliqued
stars, and black faux snakeskin Docs.
*memorable moments*
what a great show! it ranks very close to the SF show for the best one
of the tour (IMHO). it was john's 35th birthday, so MLE, mark, and kenny
were in the mood to milk this for all it was worth.
during the first mike break (after IWTCO), MLE said, "today is a very
special day. december 18th...is john shanks' birthday!" she then led
mark and kenny through a couple of bars of a fast paced instrumental.
this appeared to take john by surprise - was this MLE's bday present to
john? :-)
i didn't write down every time they did the "John Shanks Birthday
Theme", but they appeared to play it every other song or so during the
1st and 2nd sets. MLE told the audience to keep reminding john that it
was his birthday.
after one of the times the band did the "Birthday Theme", john attempted
to cue the band to do another rendition. MLE shook her head and said,
"nope, only on *my* cue." guess we know who's the boss, huh?
the sacramento show was one of the few times that MLE mentioned a
previous show during a mike break. she talked about how she had
played SF the night before. of course, everything would have been
hunky-dorry if she had just called it "san francisco", but MLE called it
"frisco" , just like she did during the mark and brian show.
*B stage*
i went to the B stage some time during SL, and stood right behind tim,
who was pressed up against the stage. i could see sue d on the other
side of the B stage.
the sacramento show was the first show on the tour where i got to
experience the crush of the crowd at the B stage. it's not a mosh pit
scene, but everyone got real cozy, especially the (inebriated?) woman
who draped her arm around my neck and got just a little *too* friendly for
my tastes - "uh, sorry, but i'm *not* interested. thanks anyway."
at the B stage, the crowd yelled out "happy birthday" to john many times.
after MMITB, the crowd then started singing an impromptu version of
"Happy Birthday" to john. a big cheer went up when we were finished!
well, MLE was so inspired that she had to do her own bluesy version of
HB to john, which we sang along with, too. another big cheer erupted
from the crowd! when she finished the song, she gave john a big kiss
on the mouth.
kenny and i had some great eye contact during the B stage set. i pointed
to him a few times which he appeared to acknowledge ("kenny, you're
the man!" ;-) ). he really seems to enjoy interacting with the crowd so
much when he's playing.
i left the B stage during ATWTH so i could fight my way back to the main
stage in time for the 3rd set and encores.
*3rd set/encores*
i ran into susan and catherine at the main stage. the three of us staked
out a place near MLE's center stage mike.
after the SHANK-tified portion of ITOO (john's blues solo), MLE pulled him
over to her center stage mike, put her arm around his shoulders, and
instead of the joplinesque bit she usually sings at this point, she launched
into a snippet of "Love Me With A Feeling". [i knew i recognized the
song, but i couldn't place who did it at the time. after doing a bit of
searching, i have since discovered that bette midler sings a song called
"Love Me With A Feeling" in "The Rose". could this be the same song? i
haven't listened to the soundtrack in years, so i'm not sure.] MLE did her
usual joplinesque rap after the snippet.
after they finished YLS, MLE and the band did their usual bow to the
audience. then, MLE, mark, and kenny tackled john and gave him a
birthday spanking. :-)
MLE shook both of my hands as she left during TWIO . when kenny left, he gave me a very
strong handshake, and then he tousled my hair! whoa! did he remember
me from the B stage? ;-)
*post-show*
we ran into some guys selling bootleg T-shirts outside the arena, but
they were selling the same ones as the SF show. i finally broke down
and bought one (not the one with the "secret" honolulu show ). jib
and i walked around a bit, but we couldn't find any different ones, so we
decided to leave.
it was still very foggy when we left. we had to drive very slowly on the
access roads from the arena to I-80. in fact, when we stopped to ask a
cop for directions to the freeway, we noticed someone had driven a car
into a ditch (we didn't stop as the car was right by the cop). as we got
closer to the bay area, the fog lifted.
we didn't get home until after 1 am, and we still had to pack up for the
SoCal/AZ portion of the tour. i called john at approximately 2 am after i
was done packing. surprise, surprise, he was still at work. i told
him quickly about the fun-filled sacramento show, and also that i had
gotten in touch with allison. we chatted for about 20 minutes or so
(probably one of our shorter calls ), before i had to hang up and hit
the hay.
jib wanted to get on the road by 7 am or so, so we could drive to LA and
get in line for the leno show by early afternoon (a ticket does not
guarantee you admission). depending on how fast you drive, you can
make it to LA in about 5-6 hours. i set my alarm for 6 am, so we would
have enough time to shower and get out the door.
sheesh...at most, only 3 1/2 hours of sleep - damn, i'm getting too old for
this...
...to be continued...

Hi,
I just saw on Access Hollywood that kd and Melissa are going to be on
Ellen's coming out
show in April. How come MEIN doesn't know about this?
They also showed the video of kd and Ellen kissing. It happened so fast
that I couldn't get my VCR going in time to catch it. DRAT!!
Thanks to all of you that gave me the URL to the Aussie Ellen site.

SPECIAL ONLINE GLAADALERT
KD LANG AND MELISSA ETHERIDGE TO GUEST STAR ON ELLEN
According to sources at Disney, lesbian superstars kd lang and Melissa
Etheridge will join the growing list of big-name celebrities who will guest
star on the April 30 "coming out episode" of ABC's popular sitcom Ellen.
New mom/rocker Etheridge will perform the show's theme song during opening
credits. Lang will play the role of a crooning waitress at "a coffeehouse
frequented by lesbians," according to Disney. The episode will be taped
tomorrow, March 7.
This star-studded cast, which also includes Oprah Winfrey and Laura Dern,
is expected to draw a larger-than-usual audience, which will, in turn,
increase its ratings. "GLAAD is thrilled that these well-known and
well-respected stars will help bring Ellen Morgan's coming out as a lesbian
into America's living rooms," said Chastity Bono, GLAAD entertainment media
director. "Now, this history-making episode will bring a lead lesbian
character into the increasingly inclusive American television family."
Please write to both kd lang and Melissa Etheridge and commend them for
their support of this ground-breaking episode of television programming.

Oh Marcy, I can sympathize with you completely. That little shimmy nearly
caused me to ruin the rewind button on BOTH of my VCRs. But that isn't all,
Melissa does some mighty fine "communicating" (if you know what I mean) later
on in the tape too. She does as much talking through her body as she does
with her eyes. It might almost be called criminal. Then again, I'd be
willing to serve time to suffer through the crime with Melissa.
Enjoy Marcy.
If anyone else is interested in getting to the JB video, drop me a private
email. I'm always willing to "suffer" through making another copy :)

Subject: *etheridge* Kiss of the Lesbian Women
I was kind of confused about the postings about the "passionate" kiss. The
clip which I saw on Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood showed kd
grabbing Ellen and planting one on her during a photo op at the event.
Ellen's head kind of snapped back afterwards and she seemed a little
shocked. I guess she wasn't expecting kd to recreate their earlier kiss.
The picture from the Aussie page was a real treat. I'm calling wildly
around my office trying to get help downloading it.
Regarding the parenting rights of gay couples, there is a big custody case
which has been covered in the Lesbian News involving Amanda Bearse's lover
and her ex. I have heard of people who planned to have children by having
one donate the egg and the other surrogate the pregnancy, but I'm not sure
of the legal ramifications of that.
I hate to admit to being so unknowledgeable about the subject of the list,
but does anybody have a list of the initials for the songs. I thought the
discussion about An Unusual Kiss had something to do with Australia for a
bit, and decided it was better to ask then post away blindly.

Subject: *etheridge* concert tapes; AUK
Hey all,
I was wondering if someone out there can help me out. A couple of
months ago someone asked if there was a tape of the May (or June) '95
concert in Phoenix floating around out there. If anyone found one of them,
I would love to get a copy of it. I am also looking for the Phoenix
concert from this past Dec.
OK, I want to comment on the AUK debate. I really hadn't thought
about this till I started reading all the different opinions, but now this
has me really interested. The suggestion that maybe it involves a man has
got me thinking. I just have one question, if I recall correctly the
person who put this theory forth said that Melissa was in the taxi, and the
person closing the shades was the guy. My question is, how does the line
"I thought that you were heading for the door," fit in with your theory.
This has me thinking that it was at Melissa's place and the other person
would be the one eventually leaving. Just curious how people see this.
That's all for me. If anyone has either of the Phx concert tapes,
please e-mail, I can't tell you how much I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Stacey,
I just saw your listing about Melissa Bootleg videos. There is a fellow in
Goldmine that has a lot of them. They are very good quality (for a bootleg)
because he made most of them himself, therefore, the dups are from his
master. I have ordered a lot from him. He can be kind of slow but it is
worth the wait. Send him a note asking for his Melissa list.

Hi all--
Is it wishful thinking on my part or did Tim Dunker post back in December
that a "live" album was definitely coming out this year and that the sound
trucks were at the Cow Palace taping the San Francisco show????
I have this vision of MLE sitting in a rocking chair early in the morning
bottle feeding little Bailey Jean, a little hand tightly wrapped around one
of her fingers, and Mel looking lovingly into that sweet little face and
saying....no, you can't start dating until you're in college, isn't there a
book somewhere that says that...
I just recently saw Snowjob '96 and thought MLE looked and sounded fantastic.
Those "cute" facial expression when they did the closeup shots...
I wish they would put out another single from the YLS album just so we would
have another video!!! I love NWTG and everytime I hear it on the radio or see
the video, I wish they hadn't left out that second verse.
Even though I'm sure she loves being with Julie and little Bailey Jean, I'll
bet Mel would like to call up the guys and meet them somewhere for a "quick"
3 hour gig...
Have a great weekend--- patty

Hey all,
Someone had posted asking if there was anyone that had access to
Bowling Green State University's Library, and whadda you know, I read it
while I was in that Library. That made me think to ask if anyone has done
any research, or had run across any pages dealing with equal opportunity
on the internet. I'm in a group project analyzing this question:
Is the Internet an equal opportunity medium? Focus on Issues of gender,
race, lifestyle, or economic class to inquire into the fairness and
equity questions.
This list that I love is what gave me the idea to choose this question.
The idea that I get to be part of this huge conversation and my only
knowledge of everyone is by their thoughts, humor, wit, and ideas. I
think It can be a very powerful thing. I figured if the chances of
someone needing my library was fulfilled, then there may be a chance some
of you might have some good insite to this.
It doesn't even have to be "research," it can be just thoughts,
beliefs, and ideas.
Thanks for the days and days of companionship.

"Melissa will be playing the guitar in the opening scene and KD Lang will

Linda Perry's February 20th performance at the Usual left no doubt as

Subject: *etheridge* RE:Oregon
For those asking about Oregon, here's some of
my favorites. I'm not sure about the Eugene area
anymore because it's been a few years since I
lived there but, there's a science muesem/exhibit
called "Omni" that usually has something interesting.
A great place to go for greek food was a place called
Poppi's near Sacred Heart Community Hospital. A great
place for a cold beer or ale is the High Street Cafe. It's
a microbrewry that brews in the basement and sells
upstairs. It's completely non smoking. There
is almost always something interesting going on
at the U of O campus. I know a huge new mall went
up between Eugene and Spirngfield a few years ago
and there is always Valley River Center. A farmers
market is held every saturday downtown or at the
fairgrounds during the winter. Lots of interesting stuff
going on there. The city bus system will take you
just about anywhere you want to go if you don't
have a car. The bike paths are well maintained
and very cover most of the city.
As for general Oregon go-sees, there's Devil's Elbow
beach with a working lighthouse, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Hood,
Portland is always interesting, the coast in general is
absolutely gorgeous, and there is Crater Lake as well.
Crater lake is the deepest lake in the US and the water
is absolutely beautiful. Even though there is snow on
ground year round, it never freezes because of the depth.
Every year there is a state country fair. No rides, but lots
of incredible fun. It's usually held in the woods near Eugene.
Lots of folk music, crafts, and general hippiness going on.
I would definately recomend tours of the microwineries
and microbreweries. Oregon is fast becoming a leader
in microbrews and wines. The varied climates make
for some interesting combinations.
Hope some of these ramblings help!

support spot on a tour...either with the Indigo Girls or Ani Difranco...Ani
would be the best bet I think as because we are two girls with guitars and
big harmonies, we could be seen as being too much like the Indigo Girls...hmmm.
Also we know that Scott whatshisname is Ani's personal manager but we are
desperately looking for a fax number for him...we have already faxed
Righteous Babe and got a very positive reply from them...any knowledge of
his fax number would be met with a big sloppy email kiss.
Thanks folks, you guys out there sure make it easier for us folks over here!!

I do believe just about every bookstore in the US has the bio by now. I know
people who have found it in women's/gay bookstores, at Barnes & Noble, and at
Borders. A couple folks have told me Crown will have it in April. Most
places can order it for you if they don't have it on the shelf:
Title: MELISSA ETHERIDGE: OUR LITTLE SECRET
Author: Joyce Luck
ISBN: 1-55022-298-8
Pages: 235
Illustrations: 54 total, including 16 pages of color
In Canada, I'm not sure if the book is widely available, but I'd think it
would be since the publisher (ECW PRESS) is in Toronto. Folks in Canada, are
you seeing it around?
In the UK and Europe, there is a distributor but I'm not sure the book is on
the shelves yet. Has anyone seen it? The last I heard, somebody in the
Netherlands told me they were told the book wouldn't be there until April or
thereabouts.
Otherwise, folks (even internationally) can certainly order the book online
through amazon.com. Go to:
http://www.amazon.com
Do an author search (last name first) and then select OUR LITTLE SECRET, and
the book will pop up, along with descriptive info and several customer
reviews, etc. You can order the book there if you like. I believe they ship
within 2-3 days.
Hope this answers your question (and then some!)

Hi You all,
This is my first post to the list but I have been "lurking" for several
months. Try to catch up on messages daily but with my schedule that's not

impression was that there were more than two people involved. My SO doesn't
think so! Opposites do attract they say! Today I saw this post by Chris:

Subject: *etheridge* Red Hot + Latin info
while i was at tower and blockbuster this afternoon, i thought that
i'd do a little searching on the MUZE computer for any info about the
upcoming "Red Hot + Latin" album that contains MLE's spanish version
of NTG.
here's what i found out:
Red Hot + Latin
Various Artists
CD / Cassette
H.O.L.A. 341 005
Produced by: Jellybean Benitez and John Carlin
some of the various artists on the album are: Los Lobos, Cibo Matto,
Fishbone, David Byrne, Mellow Man, Laurie Anderson, Ruben Blades,
Sepultura.
MLE's NTG, aka "Sin Tener A Donde Ir", is the last song listed on the
album.
i asked a tower employee when RH+L would be released, and he said
that it had been delayed (i.e. should have been released already),
and that they didn't have any specific new release date available
(all of this info was on his computer). he estimated that it would
be out in the next month or 2.
jellybean benitez is probably best known for his club remixes,
especially for madonna in the early part of her career. from what
i've been able to gather from the WWW, john carlin is one of the
co-founders of the Red Hot Organization, and H.O.L.A. (Home of Latino
Artists) is jellybean benitez's record label.

mesmerizing eyes! Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for Fla ME

anyone has further information on who is going to be there for entertainment,
it would definitely be cool to have Melissa grace us with her presence at
this event Gay and Lesbian Day at Disney. Does anyone have any ins with the
organization of this event and could you please pass this info on to me. I
would like to write letters or do whatever it takes to get ME there! Do I
write Disney coordinators or what? Can someone please help????? I'm looking
forward to this particular event! Tami in Florida : ) Thanks everyone!

Subject: *etheridge* AUK - staggered (cont)
On 1 Mar 1997, Aaron Morrison's stunner has staggered us all, with his
theory that AUK is
>about MLE's first (and only?) um.. "experience" with a man.
On 2 Mar 97, Patti Fink's staggering analysis of background material stunned
us again.
Well, it seems like a pretty good theory. I really enjoyed reading this.
But, Aaron and Patti I'm not satisfied.
Guess #1:
- AUK is about somebody making love, all night long.
- It wasn't just love, it was mad, passionate love. Judging by the the
words in the song, and by the way she sings it on stage (time after time),
she seems serious about the passion and the 'all night'
Guess #2:
- Men don't usually perform all night long. (Well maybe your man, but not
me). We have this problem with duration and repetition.
- A trained professional might, I suppose.
Guess #2 1/2:
- On 5 Mar 1997, marcy (Betasurely) reminded us that
>there's no going back to men, for me, why bother now...
which seems right, to me.
I truly do not believe AUK could have been about a man.
-------oOo-------
Guess #3:
- Melissa doesn't want to talk about it; therefore it was, indeed, beyond
her normal behaviour.
So I think, Aaron and Patti, that you are right in assuming that the
MEList's standard answer (that no-one was in the taxi) this answer is too
complacent. But what can we assume?
There might be another answer.
Guess #4: I guess something kinky, or maybe 3-way. I don't know what a pro
can do. Maybe you folks on the MEList know other ways to keep your
girlfriend 'interested' all night long?
My favourite theory is still:
- it's her first night with Julie. This idea feels good to me, and it fits
her history and her style.
-------oOo-------
I would never discuss a friend's sex-life, normally, but Melissa's life is
in a gold-fish bowl. I love Melissa, and would I never judge her, no matter
what she did. I like her the way she is, and it's easier to assume that the
life-style she projects, is the life-style she lives.
Phew! Aaron and Patti, you really made me think!

i beg to differ. linda was quoted extensively in 2 publications,
Curve and another periodical whose name escapes me, specifically
slamming not only MLE, but joan osborne, mariah carey, and dolores
o'riordan. the brunt of her vitriol was directed mainly at MLE for
even thinking of portraying janis in the upcoming mark rocco movie.
linda also slammed MLE for waiting to come out until she had several
million album sales under her belt. further, it is a well-known fact
that MLE auditioned with big brother and the holding company at the
maritime hall in san francisco on june 2, 1996. in addition, several
mainstream publications have reported that MLE will be in the
unauthorized rocco movie, while lili taylor will be in the laura
joplin sanctioned version.
i actually like linda perry's music, and i enjoyed her performance at
the usual. she is fully entitled to share her opinion about MLE or
any other musician for that matter. however, i do have a problem
with her methods, which are tantamount to shooting herself in the
foot. to *me*, slamming a fellow (and, not so coincidentally, more
successful) musician in a public forum only proves that linda is a
bitter, jealous person.
as i said, the critic's comment *could* be construed as a slam. it
is a statement, that someone who wasn't familiar with linda's
comments about MLE probably wouldn't pick up.

not only did this guy buy linda a drink, but he also knew when to
position himself close to the stage for the "What's Up" encore, so
that linda wouldn't be able to miss him when she called for
volunteers. he raised his hand and yelled to linda to pick him like
many others around him. he was a big guy, something like 6'6", so he
was difficult to miss. it was apparent that he was a fan, which is
fine. however, he broke through the "fourth wall" when he stepped
from "objective" critic to participant in the act.
>This does happen, the video for "Dancing in the Dark" and portions
>of David Copperfield shows notwithstanding.
you're confusing a critic participating in a concert of the artist
that he's reviewing with an actress who is getting paid for being in
bruce's DITD video. i seriously doubt that any well-known rock
critics such as the chronicle's joel selvin, the LA times' robert
hillburn, the boston globe's steve morse, or new york's jon pareles
are jumping up on the stages of the artists that they're critiquing.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but the chick in the "DITD" video was
little Miss Courtney Cox - the infamous "Friends" (U.S. sitcom) star!
So, yea, I think *that* one was planned too. Yes?
>Why? Because somebody likes Linda better than Melissa? Is that a

I think Susan, some of us/them are a little bitter about probably
anything this little bee-otch does because she's such an arrogant
a**hole when it comes to ME. :) And sadly enough that attitude has
really made me *never* want to hear her "belt" out anything... except
maybe "I am the true JJ/ME wanna-be," at least that sounds more
truthful than the self-inflated crap she's been dishing lately in her
interviews! :)

Morning Melisters!
For some it is the noise of heavy metal rock and roll that soothes
their souls.
Others find melodies about Angels and Heaven with Nowhere To Go the
food for their souls.
On a limb in a big oak tree the breezes blew with echoes of sultry
summer nights and a woman with a guitar playing just for us.
Somewhere between heaven and earth I found my answer to what soothes my
soul and it was not loud nor quiet nor directed at any one in general.
It was a song in the heart that told of a Lady Of Etheridge who truly
loved her fans and who loved what she did for a living.
Gently touching us one and all with her passion and hunger for life to
be good and for one and all to enjoy what gifts she has to share.
In a world so full of hunger and hate it is always soothing to me to
know that the music is always there and with the simple touch of a paw
it all comes back to me and life is good.
Let us not throw hurtful words to hearts already empty and searching
instead let the stillness of a breeze send the music that is strong
enough to heal do exactly what it was meant to do.
Have a fun and playful day.
Much Warmth,
"POOH"

Sounds like a pretty good list of artists who have a nice compilation of
latin-based music under their belts, which leads me to. . .
> MLE's NTG, aka "Sin Tener A Donde Ir", is the last song listed on the
> album.
Ouch. You know, something in me (maybe my Puerto Rican mother's genes) makes
me cringe to think that the simple fact that the lyrics of the song are sung
in a slightly clunky Spanish transliteration qualifies it for the "Red Hot +
Latin" album. I wonder, is this song going to blend with the rest of the
songs? Seeing the list of artists, my guess is no. It seems to me that
they're trying for some crossover appeal, which *could* help sales, but there
are so many good artists, who write so many good songs, in the "latin" genre
of music, who could've had their work on this compilation, that I wish that
they would've given "Sin Tener A Donde Ir" a pass. Market this CD (with
loads of appropriate information, in English and Spanish, on AIDS prevention,
etc.) in a manner heavily geared toward the audience that primarily buys Cibo
Matto, Mellow Man, Ruben Blades, Selena, etc., as they marketed "No
Alternative" to the grunge crowd and "Red, Hot + Dance" to the dance pop
market. That way, they would've presented a new CD to fans as well as
presenting crucial health information to a population that desperately needs
it.
Just my thoughts. *Pardoname mucho, por favor.*

Mr. Showbiz Exclusive: Ellen Tapes Coming-Out Episode for May
Sweeps
It's official: Ellen Morgan is neither left-handed nor Lebanese. She's gay.
On Friday night, Ellen DeGeneres and the cast of her ABC sitcom, Ellen,
taped the emotional first half of a special hour-long episode
(code name: "The Puppy Episode"), wherein Ellen Morgan comes
out of the closet to a lesbian acquaintance played by
Laura Dern, thus ending months of speculation about her sexual
orientation. In doing so she becomes the first openly gay lead in a
network prime-time TV show.
The story, written by DeGeneres, finds the terminally single bookstore
owner attracted to a female news producer (Dern) who comes to
town with an old college friend of Ellen's. At the end of the episode's
first half, Ellen summons the courage to reveal to Dern that she is gay,
only to have her admission accidentally broadcast over an airport's
public-address system. (DeGeneres's real-life mother plays an airport
patron who overhears Ellen's confession.) Part two, which tapes this
Friday, features cameos by Oprah Winfrey (as Ellen's therapist) and
openly lesbian singers Melissa Etheridge and k.d. lang. Introduced to
the studio audience prior to the taping to the strains of the anthem "I've
Gotta Be Me," a visibly nervous DeGeneres briefly addressed the
crowd, avoiding any mention of the episode's story line. At the end of
the show, the actress exchanged tearful hugs with Dern amidst a
thundering standing ovation, obviously relieved that her big revelation
was now officially out of the bag.
While the episode is a milestone for the gay and lesbian community,
many feel it is an anticlimax, coming as it does after months of jokes
and evasive remarks by DeGeneres, who repeatedly used the words
"left-handed" and "Lebanese" to describe the outcome of her
character's quest to "reexamine her life" and "find out who she is."
Some have even gone so far as to label the episode a "nonevent"--a
comment that doesn't sit well with Chastity Bono, the openly lesbian
daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono and Entertainment Media Director
for the media watchdog group Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation (GLAAD). "It's not a nonevent," said Bono. "It's a huge,
big deal, and I think we need to treat it as such." Judy Weider, lesbian
editor in chief of the gay and lesbian magazine The Advocate, agreed
that Morgan's coming out is a historic event, calling it "totally fantastic.
This character is in people's living rooms each week. For people all
over the country who might not have ever known a lesbian, suddenly
they'll be confronted with the fact that now they know one."
While the episode's impact on the sitcom's ad sales and viewership
remains to be seen, the American Family Association's Donald
Wildmon has promised to go forward with a previously announced
boycott of the show's advertisers if the lesbian story line airs. ABC
plans to run the episode on April 30, the first day of the May ratings
sweeps. --Kyle Counts

Howdy y'all!!
I wanted to let y'all know that the date has finally been set for the
2nd annual MElister (and friends) Fajita Feast (FF) held in Austin, Texas.
It will be Saturday - 7 June, 1997. Also known as the first saturday
in June for those of you who are calender challenged. ;)
The legendary SueD has been (and continues to be) the official FF
spokesmodel and Patti is in charge of (almost) all email info, including
sending out hotel info and directions to my house.
This is how it works. My roommate (Michelle (Mich) - and yes, she really
is just my roommate! ) and i buy all the food and fixins for both
chicken and beef fajitas. You are each responsible for your own drinks-
alcoholic or non-alcoholic. We will provide something to keep all your
drinks cold.
That's the general info on it. If you are interested and would like
more info, write to either of these addresses:
[email protected] (Liz Burns)
[email protected] (Patti Fink)
And just in case you were wondering, YES! these fajitas are *WELL* worth
the trip!! Just ask anyone who attended last year!
"I have never tasted anything better in my life!"
SueD
"Fajitas to DIE for! Out o'this WORLD! Better than SEX! (er, a-l-m-o-s-t...)"
Patti Fink
"Hey, Rache here...I can't type, burt, i kins drank sum breeerr...Heh."
Rachel aka Raunch
"Patti here....everybody else is slathered....totally drunk!!! NOT! The
Houst-onions are still drinking WATER!
Houstonians are NOT just drinking water!!!! This is the Texas Aggie....
ALL Houstonians are doing straight shots of Snake Bite.... BEAT THAT,

playing the drinking ganes since i arrived here."
Patti, Angela and Jonti
Or better yet, check out Kelley Piper's web page for pictures from last
year's event.

So, if you've got just the right amount of "insanity of that temporary
kind" (PUH-LEEZE!....*NO* certifiables!! White coats will be on
standby!), make plans NOW to attend this wonderful and huge MElister
gathering!
Who will be Zorro's new sidekick?
Who will get to see the infamous Calvin tatoo?
Will Randy again be the drawing card?
Will Renee stay sober?
Will the Houstonians drink only water?
Will Tonto pass out in the back of Trant's car?
Will Raunch sing Me and Bobbie McGee?
Will Tonto marry Trant?
Will SueD avoid getting a fat lip?
Will SueD stay sober past noon?
Will JohnJuan DeMiller BRING some evil evil (tm) cookies instead of
sending crumbs?
You'll have to attend this event to get the answers to these questions
and more!!

Okay, I've been reading everyone's theories for this song since last year
when it first came out. But (correct me if I'm wrong - I know you will), I
don't recall anyone stating that this could have been written the night that
MLE, Julie, and Bailey Jean's father/donor got together???
I agree on the threesome theory and that a man was involved. And, if you
think about it, it had to be an Unusual Kiss if they were trying to get
Julie pregnant. It's possible that they went at it all night long, if turns
were taken to keep each other "turned on" or trying to make sure that she
would get pregnant? I'm no expert, it's just my personal theory.
It's no news flash that Julie was married to a man, so having sex with one
to have a baby wouldn't have been a big deal to her (if this was the route
they took) as Melissa watched/participated?? After all, Melissa has stated
several times that "she was there the whole time."
The line "we all wanted this" makes so much sense to me if you picture the
above scenario. I believe that it's her and Julie, that remain while the
man leaves in the taxi. I've always pictured "her baby" having a glow about
her after the night they had. Could it be because Julie felt like she got
pregnant???
This has been something I've been meaning to send and after reading the
latest theories, I just thought I'd add mine to the heap.

Yes indeedy bob, I had a blast in Chicago! All you Chicago listers that
couldn't make it missed out in all sorts of fun, not to mention a ride in the
way cool Lone Wrangler mobile, J.R. . Hmm...maybe I should get one
meself....
Monday- The Punster and the lone Wrangler took me for a ride around the windy
city. We were gonna go the top of one of them big buildings but it was
closed for renovations or something. So we ended up going out to dinner and
a pub. I had my first shot ( or was that a triple shot?) of Jack Daniels.
Needless to say, it is one experience I never have to relive again :o)p And
to think I was ok the next day for my 8:30 seminar.
Tuesday- Pizza and beer and Melisa videos at the condo. Got to meet one of
the coolest, biggest, friendliest cat this side of the pecos...well, the
other side now that I'm back in CA...Yes indeedy, too bad Shirl and SueD were
not around. I had another beer making it two days...why, I haven't had a
beer two days in a row since Shirl was last here in Ca hahaha
Wednesday- I finally get to see a small band in a small club. hey John, it
sure is cool to see people play in front of an audience of 12. Wish I could
have done the same as you did when you got to see Melissa those years ago.
And yes indeedy had another beer.
Thursday - Our farewell party. So sad...My trip to Chicago was pretty cool.
The weather was not that bad, got to hang out with friends, got to be away
from work...it was great!
Well, back to unpacking

IMHO-AUK "feels" like that push/pull, stay/go of a first kiss between
women--one knowing exactly what she wants, the other not believing this can
happen, or be real. When I first heard the song, I was instantly transported
to a certain dorm room in Fulton, MO with my curiosity ALBAZE! (Thank you

Since Julie gave birth in February '97 (and her original due date was in
January, she must have gotten pregrant in April '96, long after YIA was
released (and AUK was written).
However, it could be that they had tried previously... :-)

Alma's theory about AUK has a good ring to it,
however, I tend to think that the scenario was a bit
more 'forbidden', so to speak. The song seems too
sensual to me to be about trying to conceive a baby.
Where a baby is concerned, you think of love and
tenderness. This song screams about raw passion and
hot sex!!
Just my thoughts.

It's an interesting theory that never would have occurred to me. I
have just assumed that Melissa and Julie used artificial (not
official ) insemination. The suggestion certainly can elicit
some very sexual images that Melissa definitely would not want to
share. But I don't think that Melissa and Julie would have considered
such an approach to getting pregnant. We can never know for certain,
of course. But aside from that fact, isn't it extremely unlikely
that this song would be about that night approximately 10 months ago
now? When did the album come out? When was this song written? The
timing would seem to make this theory extremely unlikely. It certainly
was new and different though. :)

Subject: *etheridge* Passion and Promise CD
Hi everyone!
I received a copy of Melissa's Passion and Promise CD for Christmas and
I have a few questions regarding the labeling.
It is labeled "Import" but does that mean it was legally available overseas
or is this another bootleg?
Also, I hadn't noticed until yesterday that the CD name printed ON the CD
says, "Melissa Etheridge - Charge My Mind" but the jewel case says
"Passion and Promise". What is that about?
Plus, the titles of the songs actually printed ON the CD are wrong and to
further confuse the issue, don't match the titles printed on the back of the
jewel CD case which are correct. Are you understanding this?
Below, I've listed a few examples of what I am referring to:
As Listed on back of CD case VS. Actually printed on the CD
Ain't it Heavy VS. Heavy
The Angels VS. Angels in Heaven
Similar Features VS. Similar Toy
No Souvenirs VS. Souvenirs
Come to My Window VS. Come to My Room
And my personal favorite: Talking to My Angel VS. Talking to My Hell
Why wouldn't the back of the case match what is printed on the CD
(even if both were wrong)?
Thanks for any input that anyone can give me!
Lisa :)

I don't know for sure, but I had the same questions when I got the
CD. I think it was printed overseas and lost *a lot* in the
translation. Once I realized that the songs were correct, not the
titles on the CD I thought that those titles were just a hoot.
I mean Similar Toy! That gives it a whole new meaning, dontcha think? ;)

Subject: *etheridge* AUK Theory #4126
Thanks for the info on posting to this list. Let it be known that I realize
this is not the first time I've received this info but somehow I got stupid.
Anyway, thanks.
Ok, my theory is (this is a repeat for a couple of you, sorry) AUK is about M
& J's first kiss and subsequent night together. YLS, with the exception of a
couple of songs, has always felt to me like a chronology of the two of them
getting together beginning with ME not wanting to discuss it due to a promise.
ME says this relationship is 8 years going on 9 years old. But J wasn't
divorced until 90 correct? So it took a while to get it together. It makes
some sense that they had an evening of "friendship" that turned into their
first night. Unusual wouldn't be the half of it . . . for ME because this was
a married woman and she probably wasn't sure of her reaction but felt this was
their destiny, for Julie because she was straight, married and this was a
woman whom she had strong feelings for that she wasn't sure what to do with,
etc. "You'll have some explaining to do" is evident. "Black and white has
melted into gray" - nothing was clear cut anymore, Julie was married but
belonged to ME. "My baby draws the shades as the taxi pulls away" - after
this night they were "together" regardless of their circumstances and in
lesbian terms were now each other's "baby" (lol). "We all wanted this" - who
knows? They worked together, maybe lots of people knew there was chemistry
between them and were pulling for them to be together.
Just a romantic shot in the dark which I like to do to all of her songs. I
like to think I Want to Come Over has to do with ME dealing with it after the
Unusual Kiss. HA! We do know All The Way to Heaven was a particularly hard
time for Julie when ME couldn't reach her. So maybe I'm not far off. Huh?

I bought the Duets boot when I was out in Ohio visiting my pal Lisa Lyons....as
we were perusing the list of songs we saw "Sing to Lisa"....Lis was all
excited! When we got home we realized it was MLE and Joan Osborn doing "St.

it's definitely a boot. if it's not on island/polygram (MLE's
label), then it's a boot (unless, of course, MLE's contribution is
part of a compilation, i.e. "VH1 crossroads", "r&r hall of fame",
various soundtracks, etc.).

yes, this is one of the rather comical parts of buying boots, trying
to figure out what song the bootleggers are talking about. i think
that there is a translation problem, but i also believe that it can
also be partially attributed to the fact that many bootleggers really
just aren't familiar with the artist's songs. so, they put down the
closest catch phrase that they hear.
like vanessa, "sing to lisa" (aka "st. teresa") is one of my
favorites from the "i wish i was your lover" boot, too. :-)
>Why wouldn't the back of the case match what is printed on the CD

good question! you'd think that if they were going to list them
incorrectly to begin with, that at least they'd be consistent, right?
i don't get it either.

Aaron's theory which re-opened the floodgates on this debate was indeed
food for thought,I myself had concentrated little on the subject only to
muse on how wonderful it is that Melissa's music can translate into so
many different meanings and recall special moments for so many people
when infact the lyrics could be pertaining to an entirely different
subject matter,SL for example has been adopted by many as a coming-out
anthem whereas the actual inspiration related to something different, but
before my train of thought derails...
think of Aaron's theory & then listen to "Place your hand" from Never
Enough...........interesting...eh! Is AUK another perspective of that
evening??
As for Alma's assertion,of all the ways its possible to concieve a child
I seriously doubt conception was achieved via that route. Some things are
just sacred in my opinion and disregardless of how she came to be here
I'm just glad Bailey-jean has arrived safely and in good health to
extend the family and happiness of Melissa who for my own personal &
professional reasons I'll be forever indebted to.
Thats my point,so do I have one ??

Hi all! I'm relatively new to this list and have just now had time to post.
In reading some old posts, I saw some topic on Linda Perry =o( Did anyone
read the issue of CURVE with Ellen on the cover? In it was an interview with
LP that I found basically totally disgusting. I wrote a letter to the
editors and it was published in the most recent issue of CURVE with my screen
name (IdgieGrrl). LP really turned me off with her foul mouth (hey, I can
cuss with the best but c'mon) and bad talk about our beloved ME. I liked her
work with 4NB's and was even thinking of getting her solo cd until I read the
interview. Now there's no way I'll support that slob. For those who like
her, please don't take offense as there is none intended =o)
BTW, if any of you live near Milwaukee, WI and want tickets to see Ani
Difranco on 4/12 here I need to part with mine. E-mail me if you want em'.

Julie, I'm blushing... I guess Rhondda (Hi sweetie!) and I *do* spend a bit
of time together ... last night we saw a great small-venue show with the
progressive-rock band, CAMEL (who not only sold out, but had fans fly here
from as far away as Puerto Rico and Venezuela)... CAMEL fans are certainly
not my 'usual' audience, as Rhondda can attest by describing her *shocking*
discovery during intermission ... after the show I made a post-midnight
dinner for us while we watched Rhondda's entire ALL STAR GARAGE BAND video
(and thanks to Rhondda, I now have more Melissa clips for my new Melissa
video compilation.
Julie, re: your California plans... keep us posted... we're always looking
for an excuse to show off our glorious Bay Area, one of my favorite places
on this beautiful planet.
----
Speaking of ME-list visitors to the Bay Area..............................
We recently had a ME-list-visitor *first*... the first *male* visitor from
the list, Michael Roeper, visited us from Bremen, Germany... Friday night,
February 14, several of us (Alma, Mo, Rhondda, and I) joined Michael for a
late dinner in San Jose.
The next morning, Michael and I met Rhondda at a record-show, where we all
spent too much money on Melissa boots and memorabilia (I also found a great
Sarah McLachlan boot)... then Michael and I rushed to San Francisco where
we toured several local neighborhoods by public transit on the way to the
Golden Gate Bridge... after walking all the way out to mid-span (and back),
we continued our bus-and-tram tour of the city on the way to the CASTRO,
where we bought more Melissa boots, and were soon joined by a sweet friend
from the Ani DiFranco list... we continued our unusual city-tour via tram
to the famous MISSION district where we had dinner in a jazz cafe, after
which we raced to a train station (in the seediest part of town) to catch
the late train back to my place in San Jose where we watched STORYTELLERS
(one of my favorite MLE videos)... then I rushed Michael to the very last
tram-ride of the day (it was sometime after 1:00am) so he could return to
his motel for a few hours sleep before his Sunday flight back to Germany.
A very busy day!... of course, all BAB-ers learned how to function
with *no sleep* last April when Mardi and Rose visited us from Perth. :)
----
Speaking of visits from ME-listers... it appears we may have had a phantom
visit to the Bay Area from ME-lister Roger Zender... this weekend I saw his
'letter to the editor' about the Ellen-kd kiss, printed in one of our local
independent newspapers... if we had known you were here, Roger, we could
have given you our special BAB-tour.
John Miller - who is seeing FERRON tonight *and* tomorrow night, and
who is hopeful he'll get a full night's sleep... someday

I have been reviewing the several different

is about the night MLE, Julie, and Bailey Jean's
father/donor got together.
I'm astounded no one else has put forth this theory. With all the

AUK, how can anyone discard this theory?
I, also ,believe that AUK is about a threesome,
involving the donor/father. Alma, however.
does not go far enough in her theory. Maybe
she feels WE CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
So I guess it is up to me to tell you all who is
in the taxi.
After a thorough review of the *CLUES* and
after going through a strenuous process of
elimination (I should try and get more fiber in
my diet) , I can reveal for the first time who is
in the taxi.
THE PERSON IS...............
COLONEL MUSTARD, IN THE TAXI, WITH

like john, i meant to respond to this very nice comment back in early
january, but i regretfully dropped the ball. so, let me take this
belated opportunity to thank you, julie, for your compliment. please
do keep us abreast of your future california travel plans.
back to john:
>CAMEL fans are certainly not my 'usual' audience, as Rhondda can
>attest by describing her *shocking* discovery during intermission
>...
well, since john kicked open that door and practically pushed me
through it , let me describe my "shocking" discovery. during the
intermission, i went in search of the women's restroom. i found this
long, snaking line of men but no women's line. i peeked around the
corner and found to my amazement, NO LINE for the women's bathroom!
i can't even recall when i've *ever* seen this at any "rock" show,
even those where the attendees are more male than female (and i've
been to my fair share of hard rock/metal concerts).
>after the show I made a post-midnight dinner for us while we watched
>Rhondda's entire ALL STAR GARAGE BAND video
that melissa sure can play a mean cowbell , can't she?
and why did she punch don henley in the arm anyway (this was during
one of her backup singing portions, and we couldn't rewind the tape
since john was dubbing a copy)?
>Speaking of ME-list visitors to the Bay
>Area..............................
>
>We recently had a ME-list-visitor *first*... the first *male*
>visitor from the list, Michael Roeper, visited us from Bremen,
>Germany...
[not to take anything away from michael's visit, but i think that tim
"german super fan" dunker (hi, tim!) was our first male. so
to speak. ;-) although not everyone got to meet him when we swung
through on our west coast tour...]
it was great meeting michael and seeing alma and mo again (i hadn't
seen them since the cow palace show ), especially since they
patiently sat through my YCSWID tour and autographed MLE CD stories.
so, who's the next visitor going to be? i think we're about due for
a BAB party...as if we needed an excuse. :-)
*rhondda* <--- currently wearing "high heeled shoes and a low necked
sweater" :-D
