KFOG 104.5/97.7 will be rebroadcasting highlights from MLE's 12/17/96 Concert for Kids' show at the Cow Palace tomorrow night (wednesday, 12/02/98) during their weekly Live from the Archives show at 8 pm PT. the show will last one hour (including commercial breaks). i'm particularly excited about this broadcast since this will be the first time that i've had a chance to tape any portion of the show [that i'm aware of]! the first time i was *at* the show (in the front row!), and the second time i was at one of IG's berkeley greek shows last year. key moments to listen for are: just before MLE launched into "Happy X-mas (War Is Over)/Give Peace a Chance", BAB'er JJ emmons threw her santa hat onto the stage. when MLE put the hat on her head, the BAB'ers and their cronies in the first 3 rows went absolutely nuts! after the song, MLE threw JJ's hat back into the audience, which JJ was able to gracefully extricate from the clutches of another audience member. also, during the segue between SL and ICHBY, listen for the tell-tale screams coming from the first few rows - that would have been about when i snagged MLE's pick [which she threw in my general direction]. :-) btw, for those not in the bay area, KFOG provides a live feed through Broadcast.com. you will need either Windows Media Player or Real Player in order to listen to the broadcast. since i don't have either of these utilities on my work computer, not to mention that i can listen to KFOG on my radio , i can't vouch for their reliability. i'm assuming that KFOG's broadcast isn't delayed on Broadcast.com, so those in other areas should be able to listen to it at 8 pm PT (change the time according to your specific area) tomorrow night. check out http://www.broadcast.com/radio/adult_album_alternative/kfog/ for further info. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Yup, some of you lucky Listers who got to see the VJ's at Sister Spirit and the "house parties" in '96 and again earlier this year had the pleasure well before those of us here in Melbourne >:-( Mardi and Rose hit town as performers (they said they'd been to Melbourne before to *shop* ) in the middle of last week and flew out heading north to Sydney today - after a whirlwind week of gigs-every-night. Apart from winning a whole bunch of new fans, they also flogged truck loads of their new cd and I organised them a guest spot on JOY Melbourne, a local gay FM radio station.....where they sang and talked on-air with my friends DJ's Kimina and JP for more than 40 minutes !!! Great exposure for the girls and we all had a fun time in the studio too !!! They were pretty unstoppable once they got near microphones, especially Rose :-) Everyone from this List who ever reviewed the VJ's was spot on - these women are GREAT !! Gifted and funny and clever songwriters, strong, energetic singers and crafted musicians. (Loved all that string breaking, Mardi - you're a guitarist after my own heart on that score). They deserve all the success they can find here in Australia and overseas, if that's where their path takes them. Having now heard most of the material off the cd at the two gigs Margo and I got along to (and a whole lot of stuff that is so new it's never been near a recording studio), I highly recommend you head straight to their Web page and order your copy NOW. Except give the girls a break, as they don't get back home from the last leg of the tour until nearer to Christmas, so there might be some delays in filling orders !!! Drop them a line anyway and if you check out the tour dates, you'll see when they're back in sunny Perth. So .....summer's just begun here and a whole lot of northern hemisphere performers are heading south for the winter.......including Ani DiFranco, the Cowboy Junkies and Shania Twain. (I think I'll skip Shania...... purely personal taste here ). Can't wait for Mel's next tour to Australia !!! ......That's if I'm not too old and feeble to get along to the venue ....... Hey, come to think of it, me and Mel are the same age...... so the whole scenario depends on whether she can still play guitar with her old, arthritic fingers ....... I'm gonna pay for this sort of sarcasm......maybe in the next lifetime........same goes for the next Mel tour........... Thanks i *heard* the mention of MLE's 12/17/96 Cow Palace show being broadcast on the radio tonight on KFOG itself on my way into work yesterday morning. they've been running promos for it throughout the day. here's the relevant excerpt from KFOG's web site: http://www.kfog.com/program/index.html > Wednesday 12/2...@ 8pm it's KFOG's "Live From the Archives" > (the show)!!! This week we return to the Cow Palace for an hour > highlights of KFOG's 1996 Concert for Kids starring Melissa > Etheridge!!!! now, wrt whether or not the show will be broadcast on Broadcast.com, i just got off the phone with KFOG DJ extraordinaire and Bay Area institution, Dave Morey. i asked him whether or not the feed from Broadcast.com is a *live* feed or not, and he said that it is, but that depending on the traffic on Broadcast.com, it *could* be delayed. so, based on this info, you should probably try to log into the site earlier than 8 pm PT. i've never listened to stuff on the net before, so if those who do try to listen to tonight's broadcast on Broadcast.com could report on its success (or failure, as the case may be ), i'd appreciate it! i was a bit unclear in my post yesterday when i stated to "check out http://www.broadcast.com/radio/adult_album_alternative/kfog/ for further info", since that link doesn't provide you with any information about the show itself. this URL is just the link to Broadcast.com's connection to KFOG's broadcast. also, don't forget to download the proper utilities *before* trying to access the broadcast. i hope that clears up any questions! *rhondda* <--- whose morning was started out especially cheerfully, after running into a traffic jam on 101 due to the group of guys in kilts and leather jackets standing on the roadside who had been pulled over by 2 patrol cars! MLE's Cow Palace show was always billed as KFOG's annual "Concert for Kids". i posted about it back in october 1996, when the tickets first went on sale. here's the relevant excerpt from the list archives: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ > Date: Tue, 22 Oct 1996 01:29:16 -0800 > From: Rhondda Ashby > Subject: MLE's SF show - 11th annual concert for kids > > i just heard on KFOG that MLE's 12/17 san francisco show at the > cow palace will be a benefit for KFOG's "11th annual concert for > kids". KFOG does their annual "Concert for Kids" as a benefit for various children's charities and encourages the concert attendees to bring an unwrapped children's toy at the shows. a portion from MLE's SF show was donated to several children's charities. MLE donated SL from this show for KFOG's "Live from the Archives Volume 4" yearly benefit CD last year. this year, there are actually 2 shows, one on 12/10 with Keb' Mo' and the Cowboy Junkies (i'm sitting in the front row for that one with my pal, janet! woo hoo!), and the second one on 12/11 with Big Head Todd and the Monsters. KFOG hasn't announced yet whether portions of the shows will be broadcast or not, but i'd be surprised if they weren't. back to joyce: > I thought the Cow Palace performance was merely the third-to-last > (?) show during MLE's YLS tour of the U.S., although I remember > it was a little odd that KFOG was recording the performance. I > recall everybody speculating that perhaps that show was to one day > appear on a live album. Rhondda? the SF show was the 5th to last show on the YLS tour (SF, sacramento, phoenix, san diego, and LA). KFOG has a tradition of broadcasting portions of their "Concerts for Kids," so i was not the least bit surprised that they did so that year as well. the speculation about the show being eventually released as a live album came from german superfan, tim dunker, one of my valiant YCSWID tour buddies . he told me the news during the tour that the show was being recorded for eventual release, but i was sworn to secrecy at the time. tim posted about the news after he returned to germany once the tour was over. check the december 1996 list archives for the info. at this point, i'd be surprised if the show was released, but what better way for MLE to reconnect with her fans? because she's been out of the spotlight for so long, it seems like an opportunity that was wasted, IMO. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Joplin movie w/o Etheridge I'm on digest, so I don't know if this has been posted yet. This is from Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith's column in the Today section of The Star-Ledger, Newark, NJ, though I'm sure it's a syndicated column. Hollywood--The long-planned, oft-delayed Janis joplin bio-pic looks like it's finally headed for the camera--but not necessarily with Melissa Etheridge. For more than two years, Etheridge was attached to star in "A Piece of My Heart" about the late tormented singer. She was so gung-ho to play the part--and sing a la Joplin--she even took to the stage and performed with Joplin's former band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. The feature was tentatively slated to begin production in February. Then, came reports of dissatisfaction with the script written by Etheridge's romantic partner, filmmaker Julie Cypher. Winter came and went, and the project appeared stalled. According to her camp, Etheridge simply couldn't wait any longer for the bio-pic to come together and turned back to her own music commitments. She's busy recording her next studio album, which we understand will be completed early next year--and expects to embark on a two-year concert tour when the disc is released. And "Piece of My Heart?" Well, Paramount prexy Sherry Lansing tells this column that the film is speeding toward production. As before , Lakeshore entertainment company is producing and financing, and Paramount will distribute the drama. Lansing says there is a competed script and that Gary Fleder ("Kiss the Girls") is set to direct. ......... and wouldn't you know it, I ripped the newspaper RIGHT before the end of the article...about three lines remain. KFOG included most of her between song chatter, which included such gems as: MLE authorizing everyone to take the next day off from work; MLE getting the crowd to moo ; MLE claiming at one point that she was wearing red sequins, and later on that she was wearing a full santa suit while kenny was naked ; MLE saying "this is melissa etheridge on KFOG" in her best DJ voice, and so on. it was a hoot! btw, for those who weren't able to listen to the broadcast, here are the highlights that were played: IRLY IIWT IWTCO AUK CTMW NTG BMSW HX (WIO)/GPAC i hope y'all have boned up on your acronyms. :-) KFOG did a smooth transition from BMSW (originally from her 3rd set) to HX (WIO)/GPAC (originally from her 1st set). at the end of BMSW, MLE started to do her usual drawn-out, "I'm...the...only ...one," which would normally have lead into ITOO , but KFOG gracefully cut her off right after "only" and went right into HX (WIO)/GPAC. i could definitely hear the BAB'ers screaming their approval when mark browne put JJ's santa hat on MLE's head during her spoken intro to HX (WIO)/GPAC. excellent! btw, i thought i'd include a disclaimer here: i've already heard from a number of people privately asking me for a copy of my tape, and i'm sorry to report that i don't have a second tape deck, so i can't make copies. :-( if anyone wants to give me another tape deck in celebration of the holiday season, well, then who am i to decline such a lovely offer? of course, there's always the aforementioned subliminal message about the tape tree...:-) *rhondda* "Consider this / The hint of the century" -- R.E.M. Brown Denver Post Special Writer Dec. 4 - Janis Joplin was being hailed 30 years ago as a rising star . . . and Big Brother and the Holding Company, her fiery group, was being knocked by critics for loose, reckless and indulgent riffing. But during the remainder of her brief career, Joplin never found backup as compatible with her raw vocals. Want proof? This summer, Columbia Legacy Records released "Janis Joplin With Big Brother and the Holding Company Live at Winterland '68," a previously unissued set. It's a rough, blues-drenched outing, one of Joplin's most inspired performances on stage. And Big Brother made up in enthusiasm what it lacked in precision. The psychedelic rock band captured the era's passionate, untamed qualities in its exuberant, slashing, jagged sound. "We knew what kind of musicians we were. There was a whole that was greater than anyone's individual talents - that applied to the whole san Francisco scene," guitarist Sam Andrew said recently. "There was enough space in that band for everybody to do what they could - and then through practicing, we got to where we could play it real fast. "We let Janis be herself. We weren't good or gigantic enough to channel her into something that wasn't right for her, thank God." Joplin left an ugly duckling childhood in Texas to hook up in San Francisco with Big Brother, whose members had studied photography, literature and fine arts. Joplin had previously sung country and blues, and the power of an electric rock band brought out all her latent energy. She became an overnight sensation with her performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, drawing ecstatic audience reaction and rave reviews. The album "Cheap Thrills," released in 1968, went to No. 1 and sold more than a million copies on the strength of the hit single "Piece of My Heart.'' But there were whisperings that the band was holding her back. Inevitably, Joplin abandoned Big Brother, taking Andrew with her and forming a new group. She turned into a commodity, seemingly overdoing everything in an attempt to live up to her reputation. She died of a heroin overdose at 27, ready-made for myth. In retrospect, the reasons why Joplin left the nurturing fold of Big Brother and the Holding Company seem suspect. "I'm almost certain that Janis would still be alive today if she would have stayed with Big Brother," Andrew said. "Our bass player was the adult of the band - he didn't do drugs, and he had a braking effect on everyone, including me and Janis. Once that was gone, she went nuts for a while, like getting away from home for the first time. We were home to her." Big Brother went on to put out two more albums but never really recovered. In 1986, the band reformed with original members Andrews, Peter Albin (bass) and Dave Getz (drums) and new guitarist Tom Finch. They continue to perform with different singers - at the Boulder Theatre Saturday tomorrow night, it'll be Andra Mitrovich. "She's from Austin - I went down there to see her in the play 'Love, Janis,' written by Janis' sister, Laura," Andrew explained. "She was a knockout. We always show up with good singers. - it's our middle name." Several directors have been vying to make movies about Joplin's life, and Andrew agreed to cooperate with them. "We signed with a group on the East Coast that wanted to star Lili Taylor, but they couldn't find the funding. A West Coast group's film was going to star Melissa Etheridge - now she's off the project, as is the original director. Now I've heard they're auditioning singers in Texas." "There's just not much that's very sure about it. Melissa came to San Francisco and played with us, and her manager said, 'A film isn't made until you see it in the theaters.' And he's turned out to be totally right." G. Brown is the host of "Rock Talk," which airs 7 to 10 p.m. Saturdays on KHOW radio, 630 AM. His column appears every Friday in The Denver Post. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? For those who are new to the concept of CDR/tape trees, the process is simple. Someone (the trunk) makes copies (the seed) for the branches, who then makes copies of the CD for their respective leaves. The leaves trade blank tapes (usually 2 for 1) or other shows (usually 1 for 1) with the branches in exchange for a copy of the CD. High quality brand name tapes, such as Maxell XL-II, are used for the tapes. The specifics of the trade should be worked out between the branches and the leaves individually. No money should exchange hands! In this manner, we are able to share low generations of hard-to-get music with many people without everyone having to purchase expensive CD boots. At this time, I am only asking for branch volunteers, including ones from Canada, Australia, and Europe. Please send me (not the list) the following: Your Real Name: Your Snail Mail Address: Your Email Address (reliable): Please put BEING SENSITIVE TREE in the subject line of your email, so that the messages will filter into my mail folder. Branches must have the ability to record tapes (i.e. make a copy of a CD onto a tape), using good stereo equipment. In other words, please don't volunteer to branch if all you have is a boombox that your mom got you for your birthday. :-) I will be accepting branch volunteers until December 14, ten days from today. If the branch response is low, I may extend this deadline a week or two. Once the branches are in place, I will post a message to the list, calling for leaves. I will only be able to make ~10 copies of the CD, given the fact that my schedule is very hectic nowadays. Please reply to *me*, not the list. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me privately. Oh, and even if you've already written to me about this, please write back following the instructions listed above, if you still want to be a branch. The two principal suspects in Matthew Shepard's murder were arraigned yesterday in Laramie, Wyoming, and both pleaded "not guilty" to the charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping with intent to inflict bodily injury or terrorize the victim. The prosecution has been ordered by the court to declare by Dec. 31st if it intends to seek the death penalty. Wyoming law allows for the defense to ask without having to state a reason that the judge be removed from the case, and the defense lawyers have done so. A motion is before the court to join the cases to be tried as one; both defendants oppose the motion and wish to be tried in separate trials. I watched the extended testimony of Aaron McKinney's Nov. 19 preliminary hearing on Court TV -- a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to bind the defendant over for trial by a jury. (Co-defendant Russell Henderson and both of their girlfriends -- charged as accessories - -- waived their right to a preliminary hearing.) The facts of the case as presented in the hearing were horrific -- Matthew suffered 18 blows to his head with the butt of a pistol -- leaving a 2-inch depression in his skull behind his right ear, among other skull injuries -- there were extensive bruises in his groin area and defensive wounds to his hands, and he was found barely breathing and with one eyelid stuck open after 18 hours in near-freezing temperatures. The sheriff's deputy who was the first on the scene said that Matthew's wrists were bound so tightly that she had difficulty cutting the rope away to free him and that his face was caked with blood except for "where he'd been crying and the tears went down his face." Albany County prosecutor Cal Rerucha said in his opening statement at the preliminary hearing, "Matthew Shepard will remain 21 forever.'' Indeed, he would have turned 22 this past Tuesday. >From the New York Times following the hearing: "Before savagely beating Matthew Shepard with a pistol butt, one of his tormentors taunted him, saying, ... 'Guess what, we're not gay,' the detective quoted McKinney as saying he had told Shepard. 'You're going to get jacked. It's Gay Awareness Week.' " A detective recounted how McKinney's girlfriend, Kristen Pasley, described in detail what her boyfriend had told her about the murder: "McKinney struck him while Henderson laughed" and then Henderson tied him up, Matthew begging for his life the entire time. Since both principal co-defendants pleaded "not guilty" yesterday, the evidence is now destined for consideration by a jury. Hopefully, the full truth will come out and the facts weighed for what they are, and in it somehow some justice for all, including Matthew and his family. I've been following Diane Carman's column in the Denver Post since Matthew's murder, and even before Matthew died from his injuries she wrote, "...the opportunity to be threatened, humiliated and to live in fear of being beaten to death is the only 'special right' our culture bestows on homosexuals." GLAAD has given kudos to the Denver Post in its news reporting on Matthew's murder, and I applaud Diane Carman for her many powerful and compassionate editorials. Here is her column immediately following Matthew's death... Patti - ------------- http://www.denverpost.com:80/news/carman1013.htm This, not tolerance, is the sin By Diane Carman Denver Post Staff Columnist Oct. 13 - Bill McKinney and Kristen Price want you to know how it really happened so you'll understand that Aaron James McKinney and Russell Arthur Henderson are just a couple of regular guys. Aaron McKinney and Henderson are accused of kidnapping Matthew Shepard, beating him savagely and tying his battered body to a fence post outside of town to die alone. They didn't mean to do it, though. It was an accident. McKinney's father and his girlfriend said they are sure this wasn't a hate crime. They talked to the suspects the morning after the little misunderstanding, and they're sure it wasn't really as bad as everybody says it was. Honest, it was all a big mistake. Shepard, who was 5-foot-2 and weighed 105 pounds, started the whole thing, they said. He was gay. He asked for it. He made a pass at Aaron McKinney at a bar. Boy, oh, boy, flirted with him. Right there, in front of his friends. Imagine that. Aaron McKinney was embarrassed by it, his father and girlfriend said. He didn't like being embarrassed in front of his friends, they said, adding that everybody knew he had a fierce temper and that he sometimes did stupid things to impress his friends. Jeez, we've all known guys like that, right? So Aaron McKinney, peeved and feeling an attack of stupidity coming on, recruited Henderson to help him teach Shepard a lesson about unwanted advances, his girlfriend said. They reportedly decided to lure him outside, rob him, tie him up a mile from town, beat him up a bit to slow him down and then burglarize his house. So what's the big deal? What's everybody so upset about? I mean, c'mon, this guy made a pass at Aaron McKinney. Bill McKinney says this whole thing is the media's fault. They "blew it totally out of proportion because it involved a homosexual,'' he said. "Now my son is guilty even before he's had a trial.'' His son is just a victim of circumstances, poor guy. Everybody can see that. The homosexual was the problem. He started it. They just want everybody to know the real story so they'll understand. What a stunning rationalization. Meanwhile last Saturday, another group of ordinary, average guys from a fraternity at Colorado State University in Fort Collins rode atop a homecoming float that featured a scarecrow figure designed to resemble the battered body of Shepard tied to a fence post and wearing a sign that said, "I'm gay.'' They thought it was funny. It didn't matter that Shepard, a guy about their age, was in a hospital a few miles away dying. They didn't mean to be insensitive. It was supposed to be a joke. Students at the CSU campus said they were horrified. The frat boys were idiots, they said. But here's the real atrocity: In the face of all this ignorance, violence, hostility and unabashed bigotry, there are still people living in Laramie, Fort Collins, Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs - everywhere across America - who will say that teaching understanding and tolerance of homosexuality in schools is what's really immoral. - ---------------- ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Dec 1998 00:15:44 EST From: MickMcC@aol.com Subject: Re: *etheridge* Family Roadtrips In a message dated 12/4/98, 11:04:44 PM, IndigoKat@aol.com writes: <<<< As family oriented as Melissa is these days, I can't see her being away that long. Someone fill me in? As Glenna explained: >For those who are new to the concept of CDR/tape trees, the process is >simple. Someone (the trunk) makes copies (the seed) for the branches, who >then makes copies of the CD for their respective leaves. The leaves trade >blank tapes (usually 2 for 1) or other shows (usually 1 for 1) with the >branches in exchange for a copy of the CD. High quality brand name tapes, >such as Maxell XL-II, are used for the tapes. The specifics of the trade >should be worked out between the branches and the leaves individually. No >money should exchange hands! In this manner, we are able to share low >generations of hard-to-get music with many people without everyone having to >purchase expensive CD boots. The idea here is to maintain as much sound quality as possible while making many reproductions. As you probably know, any time you copy a tape -- whether audio or video -- some of the resolution is lost in the copy, and if you make a copy of the copy, you lose more....and on and on it goes with each new copy, each generation. A tape tree is simply an organized way of making lots of quality copies by limiting the number of generations -- and dividing up the work of it between many people so that everybody wins and no one gets stuck making everyone's copies. In this case, Glenna -- the trunk of the tree -- is (very generously) providing a digital "master" copy for each branch....and the audiocassette copies that each branch will make (to send to their leaves) from the CDR will have as much sound quality as can be accomplished from CDR to tape. The leaves end up with an audiocassette that is just two generations away from Glenna's original CD. With a tape tree, you don't end up with a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy and, ultimately, a painful listening experience for you and your stereo. ;) It's another reason why Glenna stressed the importance of using quality tapes and equipment to make copies. Hope that helps :) Patti "Marge, don't discourage the boy! Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals! Not needing to pay Rhondda's fee, Tricia added: >We know how busy ya are J but it would make such a nice >"pre-new-album-help-us-get-our-MLE-fix-christmas-present" For the record, I did attempt to post a tapetree offer to the list in mid-February 1997, but as some of you may remember, thanks to massive network reconfiguration done by my employer throughout the year, less than 10% of my out-going email ever got to non-company addresses during the entire year of 1997... I gave up after several tries. For anyone interested, I have appended at the end of this note, a copy of my original tape tree offer, complete with setlist and review... I've carried that tape (as well as several others) on my web-based tapelist for several months, and I have made copies for a few people here, I do not know if they're willing/able to make additional copies for anyone else. I agree it would be a great tapetree, but before anyone else offers suggestions about how I can spend my 'spare' time, maybe I should mention that (1) I've been dealing with a family member's terminal medical crisis for the last six months, and (2) I'm working my arse off trying to migrate my employer's computer systems to another division by June 1999, after which our entire division is being terminated, with a 90% probability that I will be looking for another job by then... so I've got a lot on my mind these days. However, I *am* willing to supply *BRANCH* copies, with the following conditions: 1. blank and SASE only... I have no time for trades. 2. while I can easily *make* tape copies, I'm going to need help *administering* this tree, especially for BRANCHES in Canada, UK, Europe and Australia (for whom sending me a SASE with return US postage is next-to-impossible)... is there any BAB'er who is willing to handle mailing/trading/etc with the non-US branches of this tree? 3. If you are willing-and-able to be a BRANCH, and you can make *quality* copies (no boombox dubbing), and you agree NO PROFIT will be made by your trading with leaves assigned to you, do the following: a. write to me at: bab_news@geocities.com No other address will work, since 'bab_news' is the only address I can use when I am not working at my usual office, and I will most likely be away from my office until DEC 14. b. subject-line must be "KFOG TAPETREE BRANCH" Any other subject will be ignored. c. In your email, include (1) your city/state/country, (2) how many copies you reasonably think you can handle, and (3) what kind of deck(s) you use... Please no email unless you are offering to be a BRANCH... I'll just delete any LEAF requests at this time... after BRANCHES are sent their copies, I'll post the BRANCH email addresses, and all of you wanting to be LEAVES will have your chance to get copies. BTW, if you're planning on using this tape for holiday gifts, I suggest that for most people this will be a 'belated' gift. Melissa Etheridge, who has been attached to the project for more than two years, has backed out due to all the delays. While the film is still on track at Paramount (being produced by Chicago's own Tom Rosenberg's Lakeshore Entertainment), Etheridge's many music commitments have forced her to back out. The singer and songwriter is busy recording her next studio album and plans to set out on a mammoth two-year concert tour to support the CD when it's released next year. - - snip - Bill Zwecker (zwecker@suntimes.com) is a regular contributor to Channel 5 news at 10 a.m. weekdays and at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? [not that it would have mattered much to me...the building that my firm's office in SF is located in has its own backup power] apparently, thousands of people were hanging around the downtown area in SF with nothing to do. This is for the newbies who are inquiring about the MELISTER shirts. This project began about a year ago with the first round...and I did a second order this past summer. Unfortunately, I only ordered enough shirts for those who were interested at that time, and this second round turned out to be a huge nightmare with manufacturer problems and backorders, resulting in a big delay in getting the shirts out. As far as doing another round, there is no way I can commit to anything until after January. My 7 year old son has been chosen to compete in an International modeling and acting convention in Hollywood. He has been modeling since May, after he saw a display at a fair and decided he wanted to do this. This is a huge opportunity for him to go national, and although I discouraged him at first, he seems to have the look they want. Soooooo....it seems ALL my time is being spent preparing for this with photoshoots, runway walking and acting classes. The agency he is signed with is nearly 2 hours away, and we make several trips up there every week. This on top of a full time job, trying to get ready for Christmas and keeping my daughter from feeling left out has my "free" time not so free anymore!! I HOPE to be able to do another round after things settle down, and will let everyone know IF that happens. I would like to see as many purple shirts at the concerts as we can get out there, but I do need to put this on the back burner for now. I hope you all understand, as I hate to disappoint anyone. :( Thanks! Least someone else get the idea that it's OK to sell/auction MLE- related items on this list for personal profit, allow me to assure you that it is definately *NOT* OK! This list is not a vehicle for *anyone* to profit from financially. We are not here to use MLE's likeness for our own monetary benefit. We are here to share a mutual admiration for a particular musician. It is preferred that if CDs, bootlegs, pictures, posters, pics, etc., change hands, that it be through a trading process. However, it is acceptable to sell certain items provided you adhere to the=20 following criteria: 1) You MUST obtain prior approval from the list owners; 2) YOU MAY NOT SELL ITEMS AT A PROFIT. For example, if you paid $30US for a bootleg CD and you either no longer want it or you need to sell it for personal reasons, you may only sell the CD for $30US. Of course, we have no idea what you might pay for memorabilia, so we basically have to trust that people will be honest. In short, I personally don't have a problem with the autographed item offered above being sold for what the owner paid for it at the Marino benefit. Obviously, MLE's mgmt approved the initial sale of the item...however I'm sure that we can all understand the difference between MLE donating items for a charity auction and an individual's personal gain. BEWARE!!! WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Rock For Life is asking music buyers to beware of what they are supporting with their music purchases. Consumers are urged not to purchase music from artists who help raise money and support for the abortion industry. "Most people don't know where their money goes or what these bands support," said Bryan Kemper, founder of Rock For Life. "Many of the bands on our list give donations regularly to different pro-abortion organizations. These bands also use their popularity to raise money by playing concerts or donating songs." Rock For Life has compiled a list of different artists who support the abortion industry. Much of the information for this list was found on pro-choice Web sites that openly promote their concerts and CDs. The list includes artists such as Paula Cole, Jewel, Carrie Newcomer, Keb 'Mo, Ani DiFranco, Madonna, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Melissa Etheridge, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Pearl Jam, L7, Soul Asylum, Soundgarden, Salt-n-Pepa, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Face to Face, Dance Hall Crashers, Bush and many more. A complete list is available on Rock For Life's Web site, www.rockforlife.org "When you spend money on these artists' CDs and tapes, some of that money goes to support the destruction of millions of babies. Abortion is the ultimate hate crime. We should not take enjoyment from the music of artists who help to promote the destruction of innocent human life. Christmas is a time of life and a celebration of life. Unfortunately, spending money on the wrong thing this Christmas can place the very gift of life in jeopardy for many babies," Kemper said. Rock for Life is a division of American Life League, the nation's largest pro-life educational organization with more than 300,000 supporters. Gloria Steinem introduced the performers, all donating their time, and it was a rockin' show! The reason is Seagram's $10.4 billion acquisition of Polygram from Philips, which became official on Dec. 10. In the process of consolidating Seagram's Universal Music Group with Polygram's music holdings (which jointly account for some 25 percent of the United States and European music markets), Seagram executives have pledged to unload enough assets to save $300 million a year. In the process, buildings will be sold, some 3,000 employees will be let go, and record labels will be gutted. As a result, 15,000 Polygram and Universal employees and hundreds of bands will have an anxious Christmas, wondering whether they will still have a job or a career in the New Year. Of the 200 bands estimated to be dropped from their labels, most of them will be rock performers who thought that signing a record deal meant they were on their way to stardom. Soon they will find themselves right back where they started. The remaining hundred or so more rock, pop and rap acts, including such well-known musicians as Sting, Sheryl Crow, U2, Hole, Beck, Elton John, Melissa Etheridge, Bon Jovi, Ice Cube, Hanson, Axl Rose and Amy Grant, will find themselves on a new record label. In most cases, the record-label personnel they had grown comfortable with -- the company heads, the radio promotions people, the artists-and-repertory executives -- will be gone. Though labels routinely shed dead-weight bands and undergo structural changes after a new owner takes over, a reorganization on this scale is a first in the record business. The fallout will affect music for years to come, whether it means a flurry of short- lived pop bands that will help make a company's quarterly earning reports look good on Wall Street or a reactionary flowering of smaller, independent labels. Under Universal's restructuring plan, two labels founded as artist- friendly havens but sold by their owners over the past decade -- David Geffen's Geffen Records and Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss's A&M - - - will be collapsed into Interscope, the eight-year-old success story that achieved notoriety through controversial gangsta-rap and industrial-rock releases by acts like Tupac Shakur and Nine Inch Nails. In addition, Universal executives will merge Island Records (the 40-year-old label that got its start in Jamaica with reggae records before going on to make its money with U2, Dru Hill and the Cranberries) and Mercury Records (founded in Chicago in 1947 and now home to John Mellencamp, Hanson, and Kiss) into one label. Making matters more confusing: two of the most lucrative rock and pop acts at these new companies, Sting (who is supposed to be on Interscope) and U2 (which is supposed to be part of the new Island Mercury), may not go with the program, causing some consternation for label executives. Spokesmen for both bands said they were exploring their options at other labels, with U2 in discussions with Interscope and Sting considering Island Mercury. "We, like everyone, are concerned with how the whole thing comes down," said Miles Copeland, who manages Sting. "A lot of it concerns how many releases Interscope has at the same time Sting wants to put his record out. Fortunately, Jimmy said that if there was another place that was better for us, he'd let us make that decision." (Jimmy is Jimmy Iovine, a chairman at Interscope Records). Mr. Copeland added that he would wait until Interscope made final its staff and roster next month or in February before making a decision about where to place Sting's album, which he expects to be ready for a June release. But a Universal executive speaking on condition of anonymity said that the label was not just going to let Sting go and open the floodgates for other acts to leave. For the popular acts that are not trying to buck the system, the reorganization is still an inconvenience: acts like the Cranberries and Melissa Etheridge have been forced to delay the release of new albums until the dust has settled. For less popular acts, the situation is even grimmer. New groups that were signed to big deals at their old labels may find themselves forced to renegotiate their contracts for a less favorable ones in order to stay on Interscope or Island Mercury. And two-thirds of the rosters at each label will be dropped outright: for some bands this sudden independence will be a blessing; for others it will be a blow that could lead to their breakup. "It's an odd situation," said Elliot Roberts, Neil Young's manager since 1968. "It's the first time in all my years that this has ever happened on this scale. If I had a band that was a borderline band, I'd be losing sleep right now." For bands on the borderline -- with moderate sales but the potential to be more popular -- the waiting period can be difficult. Geffen acts like the bass-heavy rock group Girls Against Boys and the former 'Til Tuesday singer Aimee Mann are in the midst of recording new records using advance money from Geffen. If they are dropped from the label, Interscope would not only still own the music they have already released on Geffen but also the new music they are working on. (A Universal executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that in most cases the band would have the option of buying its new music back.) Michael Hausman, Ms. Mann's manager, said: "I think this situation is really going to affect her career. We would have delivered her record now, and it would have come out in March or April. Now, I'm not really sure what's going to happen." An even more potent source of anxiety is that in some cases Interscope and Island Mercury will prolong their decisions on whether to keep an act until after it turns in its next record. "I think that we're a band that, if they broke down the numbers and looked strictly at the sales figures as we expect them to do, they'll decide to shed us," said Johnny Temple, the bassist in Girls Against Boys, a band that turned down Interscope to sign a big deal with Geffen two years ago. "On the other hand, people in the company could decide that we have a certain underground following and artistic integrity." "We stepped into the whole process with a very optimistic yet cynical perspective," Mr. Temple continued, "and we understood the corporate nature of the beast that we were doing business with. What we don't want to happen is just to end up in some limbo land. We want them to keep us or drop us. We don't want them to say, 'Let's hear some demos.'" Robbie Fulks, a singer-songwriter who chose to sign with Geffen last year despite interest from four other labels, used to talk to executives at Geffen every day. Now, he said, it's gone silent, with "secretaries over there giving me the impression that it's like Dresden after the war." With the loss of financial, administrative and tactical support from his label, Mr. Fulks has been promoting on his own the record that Geffen released in September. "I'm not doing as many shows as I'd like to now, just what I can afford," he said. "There are some places where I can make money, other places where if I play without a band I can make some money. It's not nearly as much as I'd like to be performing, but I'm not going to just wait around and see." As detrimental as the interim period has been to some bands, an additional setback has been for groups that released a record on Geffen, A&M, Island, Mercury or even Interscope in the fall. Many of them feel that their records could have sold better or been on the radio more if they received the label's full attention. A Chilling Effect on the Prospects Christopher Sabec, who manages Hanson, also works with a new band on Mercury called Swirl, a pop band led by two brothers that many thought had hit written all over it. Perhaps the prophesy would have come true already, Mr. Sabec said, if not for the sale of Polygram. "This merger threw a tremendous wrench in the whole thing," he said, of Swirl's stillborn marketing campaign. Both Hanson and Swirl, officials at Universal said, would make it into the new Island Mercury group. Neil Young's manager, Mr. Roberts, also works with a rock band on Geffen, the Eels, who seem likely to get accepted into the Interscope fold. But in the meantime, the ambitious record they released in September, "Electro-Shock Blues," is suffering. "Half the people there don't know whether they will have jobs come Jan. 15," Mr. Roberts said, referring to the date when many believe a mass Universal firing will take place. In actuality, it is the date that the heads of Interscope and Island Mercury will meet with Edgar Bronfman Jr., the president of Seagram, to present their plans for their expanded labels. "Do you think they'll be worried about promoting a single, or how they're going to take care of their house payments?" Mr. Roberts continued. "We were ready to go with a second single, but we don't have one because most of the people who have to pick it don't know if they'll still be working and can't focus." Similarly, the punk band MXPX put its career on hold to wait out the transition. It chose to have its record label, A&M, stop promoting its single, the appropriately titled "The Downfall of Western Civilization," because it felt employees were not motivated, said the band's manager, Creighton Burke. Despite the anxiety the changes are causing for bands and staff, there is a reason these labels are getting trimmed. A&M and Geffen, in particular, have both suffered from budget crunches and unproductive band signings over the past few years; neither of them have any records now in the Billboard top 40. Many of the acts being transferred say they may be going to a better place, one willing to spend more money and time to help them grow. Jordan Schur, the owner and president of Flip Records, had been unhappy from the beginning with the way things were working out for two of the new bands he made deals with through A&M: Big Hate and Cold. When the label was shut down, things only got worse, he said. He describes Cold's career as "a car shut off in midgear." But, like others who work with rock bands in waiting, he knows that if Interscope chooses either of his bands, there's no better place they could be. "What Interscope is good at is taking bands that other people wouldn't work with" and making them successful, he said. Nonetheless, by moving bands around like corporate pawns, the Universal consolidation is not making major labels look good. Rival companies and independent labels seem likely to benefit from the fallout: some have already got in touch with the managers of bands who seem likely to be dropped. Acts like Mr. Fulks said that if they did not make the cut, they probably would not subject themselves to the major label process again. "We wouldn't chase anyone while they're still signed," said Jeff Rougvie, the head of artists and repertory at Rykodisc, a leading independent, who has received inquiries from worried managers of Polygram and Universal acts. "But a lot of those bands are really talented ones with loyal audiences, so it would be crazy for an indie like us not to look into them if they're dropped. It could really enhance our artist roster." Interestingly, the Polygram labels that specialize in country and urban music will not be going through major changes. Mercury Nashville, home to Shania Twain, will undergo little change. Motown will be made stronger, with Universal acts like Erykah Badu being let into the fold. And Def Jam, in which Polygram owned a 60 percent stake, will stay more or less untouched. It is one of the only Polygram-related labels releasing a major record in the interim period, a rap release by DMX to go on sale tomorrow. Def Jam had one of its most successful years in 1997, by its own account taking in $190 million, and though Universal has offered to buy the remaining 40 percent of the label, at present the owners do not intend to sell it. The hands-off attitude toward these labels, some in the industry say, is not just a sign of the prominence of urban and country music on the charts but also of the inadequate understanding the corporate structure has of markets other than rock. In fact, executives at Universal expressed disappointment at the small number of rap and rhythm-and-blues acts at Geffen, A&M, Mercury and Island, which is one reason why it is the rock bands on these labels that will be the hardest hit. An executive at Universal said that Island Mercury would try to set up its own urban music subdivision next year. While things look bad for rock bands, they look slightly better for rock bands whose singers have just gone through an emotional breakup. Executives at Universal said that they were relying on a lot more than album sales figures to make their decisions, despite claims by bands and managers to the contrary. They said they would listen to a group's records multiple times, check out current studio recordings, talk to band managers and artist-and-repertory executives, meet with group members and even try to see a show when possible to make sure no potential hit slips through their hands. Making the Grade With a Breakup Bands whose singers recently went through a distressful period that could affect their work positively, they said, would be more likely to make the grade than singers who have lost interest in what they are doing. At present, however, they said that their first priority was a more stressful job: cutting staff, which will be as many as three- quarters of the employees of some labels, including well-known and respected record company chairmen like Danny Goldberg at Mercury, Al Cafaro at A&M and Ed Rosenblatt at A&M. Though executives at Interscope and Island Mercury have been meeting with the top acts coming into their labels, they have only just started scrutinizing the less established bands. Their final decision will be made over the next two months, they said. "We're going to take our time," said one Universal executive who spoke on condition of anonymity. "At the end of the day, we'll be fair to both the acts we let go and the ones we keep. For the ones we keep, we'll be able to focus on them. And for the ones we let go, they've probably already been dragged over the coals by a record label that can't do the best job for them." _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I have ideas besides just hitting a drum," said Aronoff, who will perform a drum clinic at the Sheraton Denver West Hotel on Sunday night. "At this point, I understand what it takes to put a song together. "It's not that I'm a genius. I've just been around and kept my eyes open. More recently, he toured with the Smashing Pumpkins. "It rejuvenated me. I never thought of myself as old until I was with the Pumpkins," Aronoff said with a laugh. "Other tours have a set song order, a set time after a couple of weeks. There was always room for improvisation at the most intuitive level at any second. "I had to be on my toes - he led the show, but he needed the drummer to be right there with him. In 1998, James would be very, very, very wrong. Women rule pop music: They take home the Grammys (Record of the Year, Song of the Year and New Artist all went to women in '98), they've teamed up to make Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair tour the summer's most popular package show for two years in a row, and from Celine Dion to LeAnn Rimes to Natalie Merchant to Shania Twain to Erykah Badu, they sell in the millions. Fall releases skewed heavily toward solo female acts such as Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Lauryn Hill, Jewel and Whitney Houston. This pounds home the point that record companies, ever-mindful of just how important the late fall/Christmas season is, have put their faith in the women. According to SoundScan, Morissette's ``Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie'' has sold 914,000 copies in its first three weeks, or 460,000 more than U2's best-of set. Jewel's ``Spirit'' has sold more than 300,000 CDs in less than two weeks, and Houston's ``My Love Is Your Love'' has sold 123,000 copies in less than two. At several points this fall, five of the top 10 CDs on the national charts were by solo female artists. ``Certainly, if you look at this year and the releases by female artists, you're coming awfully close to covering the top of the charts,'' said John Ganoe of the Recording Industry Association of America. ``Solo female artists in pop music are very, very strong right now. Country music, for example, is now shaped to a tremendous extent by female artists.'' Even women who don't shift all that many units, such as Lucinda Williams and Joni Mitchell, both with new CDs out in the past few months, are hailed as critics' darlings for their songwriting, their CDs touted as some of the year's best. And this doesn't even count big-time new acts like Dallas' own Dixie Chicks, Australia's Natalie Imbruglia and Ireland's Sinead Lohan. Janna Brown doesn't think of herself as part of a growing trend or shift in the market when she buys a Celine Dion or Sweet Honey CD. The Fort Worth photographer just appreciates that in female artists she can hear music that echoes what's going on in her life. ``Women get more airplay, so they're known more,'' said Brown, 46, vice president of Pleiades Productions, an organization that has produced concerts featuring female artists for years. ``Part of it is they're strong women. They come across as independent. When I think of Celine Dion, she seems like a planted, strong-willed woman. And Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow are very strong. They're very independent and confident in themselves. (And) anybody can apply the music to themselves.'' That last comment, industry experts say, pinpoints the current popularity of women's music. Truth is, there are numerous factors at work. For example, the music often has a maturity not found in pop music. A solid country, hip-hop or pop-rock song with intelligent lyrics (be it by Hill or McLachlan or Nashville's Deana Carter) -- one written from a personal perspective touching on universal themes -- hits home to a lot of music fans looking for something to identify with, according to Steve Ralbovsky, senior artist and repertoire executive with Interscope Records. ``What works best right now is female singer/songwriters,'' said Ralbovsky, who signed Nanci Griffith to Elektra several years back and Lohan to Interscope last year. ``There's obviously a resonance in people's lives. Rock is most compelling when it's inseparable from a socio-political climate, and we're living in a time when there's no socio-political agenda influencing rock. ``There's a lot more personal-relationship dialogue in the music,'' said Ralbovsky. ``It's more a time of internal reflection, and people like Sarah and Jewel and Tori write about relationships and internal thoughts. People are looking for more depth. There's a search for something beyond the quick hit, a depth beyond the fleetingness of so many bands that come and go. And there's a richer resonance of the human experience in these women's writing.'' Simple economics is also pushing the growth of solo female artists: Because more women have their own businesses and have better jobs than ever before, they have more discretionary income. According to Business Women's Network president Edie Fraser, women now account for 50 percent of all leisure travel spending, make 51 percent of all auto purchases, and make nearly 50 percent of all computer purchases. Naturally, this has affected the recording industry. According to the RIAA, last year was the first in which women purchased more music than men, 51.4 percent to 48.6 percent, a shift of 8 percent in a decade. ``An artist who is able to anticipate the feelings of women is clearly going to be very powerful,'' said the RIAA's Ganoe. ``The recordings released this fall have drawn women into the stores at a time when there's similar product out there.'' The fragmenting of rock radio also deserves credit for the rise of female artists. Rock used to be classic and alternative. Now there's mainstream, adult album alternative, light-alternative, and on and on. Many female artists (especially Crow and Morissette) sound right at home in several of these formats. At the same time, mainstream country has embraced the strong story lines and independent sentiments at the heart of Carter and the Dixie Chicks, among others. ``So there's a lot more women with a certain sound able to find a home than when there was just rock and classic rock,'' said Morty Wiggins, senior vice president for marketing at A&M Records. ``It's created an opening for these artists to show their potential. One thing these women have in common is great songs. ``More people appreciate female rock singer/songwriters now. It's an interesting phenomenon. Before, if you were a female and you didn't have a mainstream pop hit, you were toast.'' All of which might make it even harder for male singer/songwriters. ``It's difficult to think of CDs by solo male artists that have done really well,'' said Ganoe. ``You're hard-pressed to think of one. Right now they're certainly not dominating the landscape.'' ``There's a lot of great male singer/songwriters, but that's not manifested by the charts,'' said A&M's Ralbovsky. ``Male singer/songwriters will put together bands, so they're not perceived as a singer/songwriter; they want a band identity. Look at Jakob Dylan or Dave Matthews. They're the singer and principal songwriter in those bands, but the perception is that a band identity is better.'' What ensures that women's popularity will continue, and perhaps become even more prevalent, is that all of the above factors show no sign of changing. - ------------ ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 17:39:27 -0800 (PST) From: Rhondda Ashby Subject: *etheridge* confirmation of MLE's participation in Kathy Najimy E! profile here's the confirmation of MLE's participation in the Kathy Najimy profile on E!. go to the URL below and click on the "Kathy Najimy" link. *rhondda* http://www.eonline.com/On/Profile/index.html Kathy Najimy Premieres: Dec. 30, 8:00 p.m. Kathy Najimy has played everything from a perky nun in Sister Act to Veronica's Closet's sexy Olive -- but few know that Kathy Najimy is a self-made woman whose teenage weight problems were the galvanizing force in her drive to become a movie star. Kudos, Liz!....fine FINE job!! :) TWCD hosted a silent auction throughout the evening to raise money, and I *almost* came away with an ornament signed by Ann Richards ...lo, though the woman I was bidding against all evening slid in one final bid to top mine at the "last" second....so much for "closing" the bidding on time ;) An Oprah package o'stuff went for big bucks in the end, though I didn't notice if the Judge Judy ornament ever finally found a home....did you, Lynn? [] *etheridge* Beckett Trivia [REACTION@aol.com] *etheridge* Beckett.'s name ["Angela Melgers" Subject: *etheridge* Dressed for Success Last night a friend (another list member) and I went to see The Susan Tedeschi Band in a club. The first time we saw her she was dressed quite casually but last night she wore a long skirt and red shoes with 2" heels. My first thought was of the ruby slippers in "The Wizard of Oz" (probably because I saw the film in a theatre for the first time on Saturday). And I wasn't the only one because I heard somebody say "There's no place like home. There's no place like home". My second thought was of a thread that took place on this list awhile back about the way women guitarists dress on stage. I don't know how she managed to not trip over herself or the guitar wire as she moved around the stage but she didn't. At the autograph session after the show, somebody mentioned Janis Joplin to her. I didn't hear the person so I don't know if the person was comparing them (Tedeschi has been compared to both Joplin and Bonnie Raitt) or suggesting that Tedeschi would be a good choice for the film. Her response was that she has been asked to do the movie and has a copy of the script! BY FRED SHUSTER Los Angeles Daily News IT'S a question that's consuming Boss fans throughout the world -- who's going to induct Bruce Springsteen into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year? Along with Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Billy Joel are included on the list of 10 who will be inducted at the 14th annual ceremony March 15 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. Musicians are eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording. Hall of Fame officials said the person giving the induction speech traditionally is involved in the record industry and has some musical link to the honoree. So, who's going to induct Bruce? Some insist Bob Dylan is the logical choice -- but nobody's understood a thing the notoriously marble-mouthed Dylan has said for the past 20 years. Of course, interpreting Dylan has always been half the fun, but for an induction speech? As Bob himself might say: ``They're selling postcards of the hanging/And painting the passports brown.'' You figure it out. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation won't divulge who's being considered for the job, but the choice is up to the committee, not the artist. Another name being bandied about is John Fogerty. There's also a feeling among Springsteen fans that Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers might be the right person to induct the Boss, but with just two albums under his belt, the young Dylan lacks the career longevity or influence apparently required. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder has also been suggested. However, Vedder might let fly something nasty about the Hall of Fame, the nominating committee, Springsteen or even the Waldorf itself. Melissa Etheridge? Politically correct, indeed, but the question remains -- why? Springsteen fans expect the Boss to perform with a reunited E Street Band at the ceremony in March, even though the powerful and highly recognizable backing band was excluded from the Hall of Fame induction. The rocker was nominated without his longtime group because he released his 1973 debut album, ``Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.,'' as a solo artist. For his part, Springsteen has said he hopes the Hall can find a way to recognize the contributions made by musical supporting groups such as the E Street Band, the Meters, the Philly International crew and the Cornell Dupree/Bernard Purdie/King Curtis axis that basically invented the Atlantic soul sound. He's right about that. The credibility of the Hall of Fame is suspect as long as such important studio pioneers as New Orleans R&B drummer Earl Palmer, saxophonist Curtis, Motown bassist James Jamerson and Los Angeles session drummer Hal Blaine remain unrecognized. - ----------- ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Dec 1995 20:05:20 -0500 From: "Molly" Subject: Re: *etheridge* SMEC: Who will introduce the Boss at the Hall of Fame? >Melissa Etheridge? Actually, I thought her hair looked great! It was kind of a shocker at first, but since they came back to her 5-6 times during the hour, the shock wore off fairly quickly and I thought it was a good cut for her. Besides, change is often a good thing, IMHO....(perhaps the patch-quilt blouse is next? )....I don't know many people who keep exactly the same hair style/length forever, it's a refreshing thing to get a new look now and then. And who *knows* what her hair will be like by the time she finally starts touring (...or even by the time her new album is FINally released, for that matter ) I was hoping when Dan mentioned it that they'd show a bit of Melissa singing Ave Maria at the wedding....the quick clip of their dog as ring-bearer was pretty cute ;) HNY, y'all! :) Be safe if you're out on the streets tonight!
