LOL You folks might recall that, a few months ago, my buddy Choo decided to sell off her old Melissa magazines and posters in order to raise some cash for a cross-country trip. Well, Choo called me yesterday to tell me that she'd opened an old suitcase she'd had thrown in the back of her camper, only to discover two copies of the Dec 3, 1993 BAM. Collectors will remember that this issue of BAM (Bay Area Music Magazine) contains an excellent article on Melissa by Lydia Carole DeFretos entitled: "Melissa Etheridge: A Fresh Out Look." An accompanying sidebar by Todd Everett, called "Not in Kansas Anymore," provides many details about MLE's early career. MLE is also featured on the cover of the magazine. The neat thing about these two copies that Choo found is that they were laying flat in the suitcase....that is, not folded. See, for anyone who has ever seen BAM live and in person , it's a *big* magazine (sort of like Interview Magazine)....and both mags are in primo condition because they've been in a darn suitcase for five years. Yadda, yadda, yadda...well, Choo asked me to offer them for sale for her to the highest bidder. She said to start the bidding at $30 apiece. She'd also ask the buyer to tack another $5 onto the sale price to cover priority mail postage and the cost of a large protective mailer. I can vouch for Choo's integrity as well...she will not stiff anybody! If you are interested in bidding on the mag, please email me privately. I know that many do not care for the way she dresses and would love to see some of her clothing disappear. I for one, like the majority of the things that I have seen her wear. If she ever decides to get rid of the purple fringe jacket, there is a spot in my closet for it. The same goes for her pink paisley guitar. I dress for myself. I like to be comfortable in the clothes that I put on and choose my clothes according to my likes, not what others think I should be wearing. Thanks for letting me express my opinion. She still has a problem with bootleg videos, but I can't imagine that owning a concert boot ever kept anyone away from a concert. I had seen a lot of video boots before I finally got to see Melissa in concert. I thought how nice it was to see her in focus . I ordered the license frame that says "I would rather be at a Melissa Etheridge Concert". Ain't that the truth. Speaking of bootleg CDs, I just bought a Storytellers boot. It is not a release from one of the regular bootleggers, but is a recordable CD some enterprising fan has made up. The insert photos are not the best quality, but the disc itself is neally neat. It is a photo they stole off the net and is very professional looking. The sound is great. To fill up the disc, they included 5 songs from the '96 Cirkus show in Sweden. All this will have to do until VH1 smartens up and releases her Storytellers performance. pk ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Jul 1998 12:55:05 -0400 From: gina.novak@marcam.com (Gina Novak) Subject: *etheridge* NMEC Where is everyone? Hi All, Where is everyone? I know this is a big vacation week, but WOW! Last night's list had one post. When we had the discussion a few weeks ago about femme vs. butch, that was interesting. I honestly enjoyed and looked forward to reading the list when I got in to work in the morning. And it got a lot of folks into a debate, sort of. It was great hearing everyone's opinion. So, I thought I'd try again. If you hate this, don't participate, don't read the posts, but I thought I'd try anyway. Here goes... I'm female. An adult woman. What do you other adult women think when you're referred to as a "girl"? I personally don't like it. I find it offensive. To me, a "girl" is a child, and when an adult male calls me "girl", I feel as if he's calling me a child. I also don't like it when women refer to other women as girls, so it's not just when men do it. I am slowly educating my coworkers to not say this. It's beginning to work. And I suppose I should ask you gentlemen on the list how you feel being referred to as "boy"? Do you have the same reactions as say, I do. Just curious. And please, if you really hate this, be kind and just ignore it. Watch, everyone will hate this so much that there won't be any posts, except people cyber yelling at me to SHUT UP! So.... Gina asks: I'm female. An adult woman. What do you other adult women think when you're referred to as a "girl"? It depends on who's saying it. I've never had a problem if it's other women who mean it with affection, but if it's from someone on a high horse, that's unnaccetable and I will tell them so. I guess it's similar to the double standard I have for "dyke". I can call myself that, my friends can say it, but if someone on the street yells it at me in a derogatory fashion, it's a whole other thing. So I guess the defining difference is "intent". And Krista said: Personally I try not to get too worked up over other people's ignorance or lack of thinking. I think most of the time, when someone refers to women as "girls" they don't mean to be demeaning, they just don't think about it. *NOTE*- THIS IS NOT A FLAME, I AM SMILING AS I WRITE THIS... So I am also an ignorant offender, yes, it's true! I often greet friends with "Hi, girls". Ooh, or worse yet, "Hi, guys" when refering to women. I suppose it is a lack of thinking, but there is never anything but affection for the women I refer to. And I'm not the least bit upset if they call me "little missy" or something if I'm being a smart-ass (which is usually what prompts it). It generally just makes me laugh at the situation. The term "chick" doesn't bother me either, if said with affection. Again, it's the person's intent. Then Krista writes: I didn't mean to say that everyone who says girl or chick is ignorant. Oh good! : ) I do try not to do it if I know someone is upset by it. And then there's Rhondda: personally, i dislike it even more when i'm referred to as "ma'am". ;-) Oh, ditto! But I've been trying to realize that they're just being polite, and I've said it too, being polite. And Joyce: I hate being called "girl," too, but I don't mind it when my friends tell me, "You GO, girl!" But they're calling you "girl". Sorry, just little missy over here being a smart-ass! : ) Okay, enough outta me. I know I'm a woman, but I really don't mind being called a girl as long as it's in the right context. Maybe I'm trying to hold on to my youth and really don't want to grow up yet??? I can see myself in my 60's rollerblading and someone saying "hey grandma, you go girl!" That in my opinion would be quite the compliment. I hope to realize this someday! Sometimes it's beneficial to be in the "women" category. I like being able to be both a woman and a girl. Trust me, I'm not one for labels - oops that was another thread now wasn't it?? (just kidding). But, as Rhondda stated the word "ma'am" has no place in any conversation directed at me or any of my friends. (See Rhondda, I'm sticking up for you!!) As for Allison's comments: "P.S. By the way, in my book, Sarah Bettens definitely wins the "girl in a dress with a guitar" contest that was raging a while ago." I totally agree with her. That "girl" rocks when she has a guitar in her hand. I was just impressed that the dress never flew up! She sure was jumping really high and I thought for sure it would. Or, should I say "hoped" it would???? Hey, it would of given us something else to talk about right??? The age of the person using the terms. some words(doll, little woman, married couple calling each other ma/pa ,my old lady or the one i've heard from older people "colored" refering and not malicously to african american people.) I've been on the list for about 2 years now and once in a blue moon post a short message. I read faithfully all the post and would like to give my comment on the latest subject. Without going into a looonng story, I work for the Department of Corrections. I started when I was 20 at a location that was dominated by male staff. My facility is also all male. It was real hard to get use to being called "ma'am" all the time. I was young and was use to calling others that, not me being addressed that way. :) Anyway, by most of my superiors I was refereed to as "kid" or "girl" which...... do to who it was from and the intent.......that bothered me and I let it be known!! Now, ten years later I have surpassed most of my old supervisors and now they call me "ma'am" too! :) Over the years, I have became use to it, knowing that it is either due most out of respect or professionalism. In the same manner you would give a teacher or your parent. I haven't been called girl or chic in awhile, even from my personal crowd of friends. It is just not used that often. Around friends I would not take it offensive at all. I agree that it is the intent behind it. In fact it would be a nice change from hearing "ma'am"! That's it for me......... From one sweet girl and crazy chic.............(hee-hee) Stevie ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ End of etheridge-digest V2 #69 ****************************** From: Majordomo@esosoft.com To: mlelist@gte.net Subject: Majordomo file: list 'etheridge-digest' file 'v02.n070' Date: July 13, 1998 11:13 PM etheridge-digest Monday, July 13 1998 Volume 02 : Number 070 *etheridge* Re: etheridge-digest V2 #69 [IndigoKat@aol.com] Re: *etheridge* Re: etheridge-digest V2 #69 [keri ] *etheridge* What is your AOL Instant Messenger Screen Name? MEIN has confirmed that this is really Melissa Etheridge, and if you go into the MEIN chatroom, the banner over the chat states that the contest is for real. <Johnguit Message-id: <1998071316414000.MAA02669@ladder01.news.aol.com> Hello it is Melissa...go ahead check with MEIN. This is an old name I let John use when we were on the road. Julie and I need your help. We found a five week old kitty in the neighbourhood and need to give it to a good home (ours is a little full and getting more full soon) We thought we would go to the internet and see if anyone in the LA area could give it a home. So here's the deal. Write an essay in 100 words or less as to why you want the kitty, include your phone number please, and we will read them and choose one to call. Julie will ask you lots of questions (she is in mother mode) and if we think you are the one the kitty will be yours, along with an autograph or something. We are very serious about this and need to choose someone today. Thanks. Oh and thanks for keeping the fire's going here. I know I have been away a long time, but I am finishing my new album and you will hear from me soon. You all are the best. Melissa>>>>>>>> So....LA Listers who are cat lovers....good luck!! Hey Krista, don't feel bad - you have to watch Xena a lot and know the background before you can really get into the show IMHO. I started watching a little over a year ago and I'm still trying to learn all the history and understand all the deeper levels of the show. Without the background the show can be a little silly, unrealistic and violent IMHO. Beware, I got my girlfriend hooked on the show and now I've become a Xena widow :( I never see my girlfriend anymore because she has gotten so into the show. I think she's become obsessed because it is a show where she can identify with two strong women in a very close relationship. She identifies with the characters as being us - we have similar hair colors and personalities (I could pass for Gabrielle if the person seeing me was really drunk ;) If only we could have all of their talents.... It is also an interesting fantasy world my gf can escape into away from her job she doesn't like. There is some wonderful lesbian fan fiction on the web which expands on the characters. Anyway, it takes some effort to get into the show but we have found the rolemodels worth the effort ... other than getting left alone while my gf is reading about Xena all night. But then MEIN confirmed it was her and so.... I guess several people on AOL did IM that Johnguit screen name when she was online, and one person spoke with MLE and another spoke with MLE and Julie's assistant, Kelly. I was out sick from work watching VH-1 until it cuts off at 4:30 pm. (did I mention how much I hate TCI???) Anyway, it was nice to see Melissa not once, but at least 3 times. I didn't think of taping it because I thought she was only going to be on that one time. It was a well done biography on Bonnie with a lot more history than I had even imagined. It gave me more respect for her. Life hasn't been that easy for her, yet she picked herself up and showed them what she was all about. In the process, she found herself a "hunk" (her words) and fell in love. (That was the coolest part of the bio!). I'm such a sucker for a happy ending. Then as I was getting ready for bed, there was a show called "Hard Rock Live." It was on at 10:00 pm. or 9:00 pm? I can't remember. Anyway, you wouldn't believe the line-up!! I wished I had taped this show but I had come into 1/2 way through. The half that I caught was Paula Cole, K.D. Lang (she did 2 songs - The Joker and All I Need is the Air that I Breathe), Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, and Cyndi Lauper. I was floored and kicking myself for not taping it. The funny part was that they introduced the Indigo Girls as Shawn Colvin, but when I heard the beginning of their latest hit (Shame On You - not sure if that's the exact title - no flames I'm just not as up on them as I am on Melissa), I knew they had made a HUGE error. Did anyone else catch this? Hey Rhondda, is there a site to find out who they'll have on the next show. Is this a weekly show? Was I hallucinating??? Oh I almost forgot to mention why I was watching VH-1, I was looking for the latest Billie Myer's video - Tell Me. Wow, the song is hot but the video is steaming!! This one I did tape. Hey John "Don Juan" Miller - you are going to LOVE this one! They have her in several outfits and compromising positions - my TV screen was left sizzling. Of course, this is all my own personal opinion. Back to work, I'm soooo behind but wanted to write about last night's show while I was still semi-conscience. I'm on digest, so I don't know if this has been posted, and this may have been a rerun so someone else may have commented on it previously, but I caught MLE on Behind the Music on VH-1 last night. They were featuring Bonnie Raitt, and had several bits of an interview of Melissa included in the show. I don't remember everything that was said and I didn't catch it on tape, but among the MLE comments were that Bonnie Raitt stood out in her respect for the artists that preceded her, and that her father had pointed out Bonnie Raitt as an example of a woman in music when she was a kid.>> ================================================= ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 13:53:22 -0700 From: JANET_REDHAWK@Non-HP-Vancouver-om1.om.hp.com Subject: *etheridge* Tuesday - Music Day Alma wrote: <(did I mention how much I hate TCI???) Is this a weekly show? as far as i know, VH1's "hard rock live" is a weekly show, but i don't think it goes on all year (if that makes any sense). in fact, i think it just started a new "season" last friday with the pretenders. VH1 has a "hard rock live" web site which lists the upcoming schedule (http://www.hardrocklive.com/schedule.html). upcoming artists include Third Eye Blind / Natalie Imbruglia, YES / Moody Blues, Boyz II Men / Brian McKnight, Ben Folds Five / Squeeze, Earth Wind & Fire, Soul Asylum / Ani DiFranco, Ringo Starr / Peter Frampton, and Trisha Yearwood / The Mavericks. RockOnTV (http://www.rockontv.com) is also a very good source of information. > Was I hallucinating??? is this a rhetorical question? ;-) *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Similar things can be said of Mary Lou Lord, who has a great ear for good tunes... too bad she's waaay under-mic'd on the Conan show, as she's much better than the show presents her. See her live if you can (Boston listers take note, she lives in your area and is doing Lilith)... I spent much time with her after her last San Jose show and she's very wise in the strange ways of the music biz... meet her if you can! Victoria Williams is another subtle surprise... wish I got MuchMusic from TCI (bah!)... I'd love Elliot Smith and Victoria Williams on video! That's all for now... I need some sleep. These artists are all share high-impact, emotional styles of rock, but there seems to be some 'connectedness'. It's easy to imagine that Melissa is 'similar' to Janis, but she's also 'similar' to Heart. In my grid, the left column singers are very personal, and the top row are more finished. I see other connections, too, but I better not go beyond the bounds -- after all, the main reason I listen to these artists is because I enjoy them. I'm not sure how popular they are here in the U.S. but they are very popular on my cd player. They got into rotation last year (?) on either/both VH1 and MTV with "Not an Addict" and they played a bunch of Lilith Fairs this year. Didn't Sarah move to Santa Cruz recently? If yes, then I would expect more West coast shows at least (in addition to the small one happening in a couple of weeks). When I saw them at Lilith shows, people around us seemed to enjoy them and we would hear them saying things like, "Who's that?" and "That was good." Didn't they open for Indigo Girls a while back? (Lame MEC): Wouldn't they be great opening for Melissa? Some previous Melissa openers (Joan Osborne and Paula Cole) have done reasonably well in the "making it" category... Oh, and Sarah *did*, after all, win the "girl-in-a-dress-with-guitar" contest. And I believe the judging for the "girl-in-a-dress-on-top-of-a-set-of-drums" contest begins this week. Sure, this is a common sight at summer music festivals, a popular place to hang out with a date. But at the Lilith Fair, there will be a slight twist. Somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of the attendees at this all-female artists event will be young women, and the object of their public affection will likely be other women. To some people (mostly guys), Lilith Fair is dismissed as merely a collection of "chick singers" and their rabid followers, or as a nice little marketing ploy that creates strength with numbers. Yet to others, this is some revolutionary coming-out party, a banner-waving celebration of "Girl Power" unlike any we've ever experienced before. "In truth, this kind of stuff has been going on for two decades at the Michigan Womyn's Festival, an event completely created and powered by women's labor," notes Debra D'Alessandro, host of WXPN's Sunday night lesbian music and culture program "Amazon Country." "Lilith is different, though, the first mixed event. Guys can get in the gate, too, to see what's going on. And guys also have a lot to do with the backstage operations, with making the money." Lilith Fair organizer and star performer Sarah McLachlan calls her women's music festival "a great example of strong women out there doing something they love, doing something really positive." The unexpected "sleeper" hit of the 1997 summer concert season, and the first to truly underscore the buying power of the female concert-going audience on a national level, Lilith has had an almost revolutionary impact on the pop scene, akin to the counterculture's coming-of-age party Woodstock, nearly 30 years ago. For one thing, Lilith has encouraged many recording companies to bet more heavily than ever before on female acts. It has also sparked the emergence of new pop radio formats dominated by female singers and announcers. There used to be an ironclad programming axiom in pop radio -- never play two female artists back to back. Now it's rare to hear two males in a row on stations like the MAXX, B-101.5 or WXPN! One might argue that the success of Lilith has also encouraged more forthright feminist activities in other arts -- from Ellen DeGeneres' coming-out party on television to public debates over the propriety of Ellen's girlfriend Anne Heche playing the silver screen love interest of Harrison Ford. Now Lilith is back and flexing its muscle even more, this summer with 50-plus North American dates and a broader array of female talents, brags McLachlan. (Meaning: A smattering of African-American hip-hop and soul talents, like male-slamming Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, are being mixed in with your typical white folkniks and grrrrlll rockers. Here, the lineup also includes tough-nosed Liz Phair, the anthem-ringing Indigo Girls and artsy Natalie Merchant on the main stage, plus Kacy Crowley, Rebekkah and Morcheeba on the second stage, and locals Nancy Falkow, Paris Hampton and Emm Gryner on the Village stage.) Concertgoers also will discover a list of high-profile show sponsors as long as your arm. Everyone from Starbucks to Levis, Kodak to Volkswagen wants a part of this event and its mostly young adult female audience. Worthy causes getting a little piece of the action include the Rape, Abuse & Incest Network (RAINN), the AIDS charity LIFEbeat, National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) and the International Rett Syndrome Association. For activists like D'Alessandro and Leigh Jerner, Lilith is one great coming-out party, especially for younger women who may have been afraid to flaunt their true sexuality. "There's a level of acceptance there. Suddenly, you're not alone," said Jerner, an organizer of the recent Dyke March through Center City and member of the Gay and Lesbian Lawyers Alliance. "Music is a great way for you to connect, especially if you're in a small town and nobody else there is gay, but you can order a tape of a lesbian singer. Every time a person or group comes out, it's 'Oh wow, they're doing well.' And if there's a critical mass -- be it at a concert or a pride march -- people feel more comfortable holding hands or showing affection than they would necessarily feel walking down Walnut Street." "Events like Lilith offer a window into lesbian culture for straights, as well," Jerner added. "It makes it more accessible." While I can remember many a young dude putting on androgynous clothing and dyeing his hair bright orange in the wake of David Bowie and Mick Jagger's coming-out parties in the 1970s, neither Jerner nor D'Alessandro now believes a lesbian song or stage personality can sway a young woman's sexual orientation. "There's too much emotional baggage, too much pain to endure," Jerner noted. Still, they argue that it does help the cause that many of the most popular female artists today are themselves lesbian or bisexual, and address the issue in their songs, videos and social outreach. Melissa Etheridge and k.d. lang were among the first big pop stars to come out of the closet -- and it hasn't seemed to hurt their careers any. Ditto for bisexual dabbler Madonna, Tracy Chapman, Janis Ian and longtime "out" entertainers like Holly Near, Chris Williamson and Ferron. "I'll never forget going to see Etheridge at a Tower concert," D'Alessandro remembers. "The audience was split right down the middle -- half lesbian women, half rocker dudes in black T-shirts with their Daisy Mae girlfriends, and everyone was throwing their fists in the air." As positive role models go, Ani DiFranco is currently the primo poster girl of the lesbian cause -- a charmingly frank, funny, opinionated and aggressively sensual bisexual personality who turns on men and women alike. "Even though she's married now, I still want to get on that list," hummed Jerner. "Straight guys still have problems with gay men, but they find girls who go both ways quite exciting," confided a 20-year old female acquaintance. "You can see it on Jenny Jones and the Playboy channel all the time. So girls feel free to play with the idea, even if they don't act on it." While Lilith Fair performers the Indigo Girls are enormously popular in these parts -- pulling a nicely blended straight and gay audience at the recent Appel Farm festival -- these open lesbians recently had their share of problems down South. Last month, high schools in Columbia, S.C., and Germantown, Tenn., both abruptly canceled free concerts by the Grammy-winning folkies (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers), after homophobic parents protested the duo's appearances and a school principal decried their use of the dreaded f-word in one song. Ray called the administrator and promised to cut the song from the set list, but he would not budge from his ban. One suspects he was more disturbed by the lyric to another of their songs, "It's Alright," in which they ask "Do you hate us 'cause we're gay?" At the Appel Fest, that line sparked a hearty "No!" and cheers from the mass of teen female fans squeezed up to the fence in front of the stage. For women in her peer group, the phenomenon of lesbian chic "is yesterday's news," dismisses Sophie B. Hawkins, a 32-year-old "omnisexual" singer best known for the gay-friendly hit "Damn, I Wish I Were Your Lover" and subject of a startling new documentary "The Cream Will Rise" playing at 7:30 tonight and 2:15 p.m. tomorrow for the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at International House, 3701 Chestnut St. (with the artist and filmmaker Gigi Gaston on hand). As for Lilith? "It's not my scene," claims Hawkins, whose new album of highly provocative material "Timbre," coming in September, deserves a much more intimate and focused first listen. Yet for many young teen girls, declaring yourself a lesbian or supporter of the cause has seemingly become a cutting-edge way of expressing yourself, of separating yourself from the masses. "Many junior high and high schools now have Gay, Lesbian and Straight Alliances," notes D'Alessandro. "Saying you're a lesbian has become a form of rebellion, like growing your hair long or taking drugs or interracial dating was for hippies in the '60s," opines schoolteacher and parent Ernie Baker. "I went to an Ani DiFranco concert with my daughter recently where girls were hugging a lot and holding hands, but when they got too close, they'd pull away. Frankly, I think most of them were faking it." Faking or not, being "out" is increasingly "in." And whether or not this fashion trend fades like tie-dyed and bellbottom jeans, one thing is clear -- Girl Power is growing into Woman Power, and there ain't no stopping them now. So anyway, presuming that you wouldn't go all weak at the knees to meet Melissa in person, what would you say and/or ask if you got picked by this show and got to meet her? Here's what I'd say: I'm really thankful for your music, and I really respect you as an artist and a person. I've seen you live in concert several times and you are the most powerful live performer I've ever seen. Here's what I'd ask: (1) When's the next album and tour? (2) Has having a child affected your relationship with Julie? (3) Where do you see your music going in the next few years? (4) How do you keep from getting warped by all the stuff that goes along with living and working in Hollywood? Looking forward to hearing what the rest of you would come up with. As I read some stuff about singer Sarah Bettens on this list, I thought you Melissa fans would like to read this as well. It's taken from an interview w/Sarah in a Dutch music magazine last week.(Translation of course) She had to react on some female rock singers. On Melissa she said (especially LTWID song): "My eldest brother had the first cd. This song (LTWID), is when you really think about it, the forerunner for Alanis Morissette. The whole album has some bitterness, she makes a very jealous impression. LTWID is a good comparison with You ought to know, 'cause they bought deal with anger and jealousy. Both Melissa and Alanis are very direct in their songs. I am more a fan of Melissa's first albums than of her later ones. In the beginning there was more pure emotion. You felt it came directly from the bars. Later on I saw her perform, in the States, in a huge arena and it became more a real show and I missed the personal singer-songwriter contact. She still keeps being a great singer. She's also a role model for lesbian women. I saw last year a videoclip of her, where two women had a relationship. You don't see that too often, and I thought that's really cool of her." "LTWID was the song on our demo that someone heard. He liked the way I was singing that song.He brought us in contact with the musicworld in Belgium. That's how it started". Also she said something about Amy and Emily: "To me they are the best group that exists. The music is honest, comes straigth from the heart. Even as human beings they are like that and that makes it more fun to listen to their music. The way that they both sing (in harmony) and how they use their voices, that's something I have been listening to a lot. I have started to use that in our music as well". That's what she had to tell about Melissa and the Indigo Girls, I hope you folks liked it. For me it was the first time to do this, maybe in the future when Melissa does interviews in Dutch magazines or whatever (anything that would be interesting to the MEListers ;-)) I might do this again. So we've been working our collective asses off packing, moving, painting, installing flooring... all in way too short of a time, but it's all for our own home this time! So I'm exhausted, have several sore muscles and various bruises, haven't gotten to play on-line or with my guitar (which makes Elizabeth a very unhappy girl!) but it will all be worth it on July 24th when we officially move in. Just thought I'd share our happy occasion with you all. Anyway, thanks for the laugh, Rhondda, I needed it this morning. And Allison wrote: > Cherry Oh Baby Melissa's original title, with sampling from the Indigo Girls' "Walk Away" (cf. Live at the Uptown Lounge) That is hysterical and may I add, very clever! And finally, if we're going to have a discussion about hot women, I think Gillian Anderson qualifies as a superhero. Every time she barks out an order my g/f and I just go "okay!". Grrrrr. And Linda Hamilton pumping that shotgun one-handed... it seems strange but that is one of the sexiest movie scenes around IMHO. It also is a great motivator when I don't feel like going to the gym. I had just been cutting them down for about 10 minutes. Well to make a long story short, I got to tell her about all the gripes I have, and that I had heard on this list. Way to go for Sarah, et.al., but Melissa really missed the boat. I was under the impression (from an earlier post on this list, I believe--Joyce? Rhondda? Anyone?) that Melissa actually asked McLachlan about being in Lilith Fair this year. MLE decided that she didn't want to be involved because she wouldn't get a lot of time to perform, and she thought that she could go ahead and do her own tour and play as long as she wants. I don't know if this is really true or not, but I think it's a little prima donna. Other "stars" also need time to perform. There's probably more to it than that. Who knows? As for IG content--the new(?) issue (can't remember right now which month it is--I have trouble finding this magazine all of the time) of Performing Songwriter is featuring IG. I haven't read it yet, but this magazine usually has really good articles. This one is fairly long with questions for both Emily and Amy. Anyone seriously interested in what's behind the music of this duo should read this article. Well, of couse, Ms. Blackmon...time tends to change us and I'm no exception! I've managed to lose an inch which would obviously make me about 6'4" now (hubby #5 swears 6'3"--but I'm not giving in...if he argues any more, he'll be *ex* #3). I'm now 53 years old (I stopped at that age because I like to say '53'). I lost all interest in 'Deep Throat' once I realized that s/he had '...one hand in her pocket and the other hand...,' well, you know. I still wear clothing, although the famed black wool Armani suit hasn't seen the light of day for a couple years, now. It's been replaced by a champagne Donna Karan number and what I would call a 'misty' black/grey *silk* Armani. (I also just realized, as I got up and walked down the hall to the restroom, that my shoes feel pretty tight today. Upon further investigation, I deduced that tightness is caused by shoes being one size too small...can't figure out how that happened and I'm just now noticing it. Perhaps I'm losing my touch in my old age...) I managed to stay alive until just this past spring. I was again "called in dead" to work...supposedly by the same culprit who emailed news of my demise to the four corners back in '95. I *did* forget to include the required Grrrrllll/Girl/Woman and Hot Babes content from last week...I don't mind being called girl by friends or those folks (men or women) who use the term in an affectionate manner (ie, "Hey, girl--how've you been?"). I don't like to be called girl or honey or babe by people who are strangers to me or who are using the terms in a derogative manner. I detest the intentional mispelling of words such as grrrl for girl, womyn for women, kewl for cool, etc. (although I generally cannot spell correctly to save my life, I certainly don't *try* to look like a damn fool). I also think that Gabrielle is hotter than Xena (<---note proper spelling) and Christine Baranski and Isabella Rosellini, on their *worst* days, kick the asses of every other breathing woman on this planet (note I said 'breathing'...Barb Stanwyck and Ingrid Bergman could eat graham crackers in my bed any night were they still 'breathing'...does anyone detect a pattern here?). My life-long desire is to meet up with a young Kate Hepburn in my afterlife, and hope that she will have more seriously considered her general dislike for men as a major hint and fall in love with *me* at first sight. I can't blame her for taking some time off, but she has been "gone" for quite awhile. Yeah, so you show your face at some big movie premiere, or you take acting lessons, or whatever. In music, you need to be marketing CDs and performing, even if it is as simple as a complilation of old songs, covering another song for tribute album (anyone heard "Apt. #9" yet?), or playing at benefit concerts. She has done precious little of these things. ME: I say kudos to Melissa for taking the time off. A lot of "family values" in action. For the first 10 years of her career, she toured/recorded endlessly. She hit the Phoenix area twice for the Yes I Am tour. She was all over VH1 in 1994 and 1995. Then she quickly followed that up with the release of Your Little Secret and did a world tour for that, too. Without having the child, she'd have reason to be tired and want some time off. As for the benefit concerts, she has done a few. Last summer up in Northern Arizona she was at one put on by Jackson Browne. She's done that one twice, now, actually. Jacky: Instead, the women of Lilith are "the" names in women's music, with not an utterance of Etheridge. Way to go for Sarah, et.al., but Melissa really missed the boat. ME: I don't know that Melissa's is attitude would be that. She seems a rather genuine person to me. I can see her point: Gee, do I go on a huge festival tour this summer (with all the work that it entails) and having nothing really new to promote and miss time with my family, OR, do I pass on the Lilith Fair, wait until I have something to promote, spend hours (instead of minutes) with people who are truly *my* fans, and miss time with my family. I can see her point totally. Although, I was rather surprised to see the last two holiday seasons pass without something that wouldn't take too much to put together and put on the shevles. I really did expect if not a live album, a video collection. Hmm.....let's see here... Pattern #1: Christine & Isabella were born within 6 weeks of each other in 1952. (I know that's not as fun to say as "53") And since you were born circa 1945, Jen, seems you're all baby-boomers. Pattern #2: Ingrid Bergman was born on August 29 and died on August 29. Pattern #3: Ingrid and Isabella had fame and fortune in themselves and from within their immediate families. Christine and Barb were self-starters who couldn't rely on their immediate families' laurels for their acting careers. Pattern #4: All but Barb have a first-generation heritage outside the U.S. Pattern #5: (btw, that's hard to type...my fingers keep blurting out my name every time ) Ingrid won three Oscars, Barb was nominated for three Oscars but never won...became known as "the best actress who never won an Oscar." Pattern #6: Ingrid is Isabella's mom. (...when you like a look.... ) Pattern #7: Christine named one of her daughters "Isabelle." Pattern #8: Barb ate graham crackers in bed in "Sorry, Wrong Number"...while breathing (between chews and swallows, that is). Pattern #9: Well damn. Oh...waitaminute! Jen, you've been known to enjoy watching two hot women eat graham crackers in your bed!! ....That's it!! ...and then there are the *possible* patterns...but this is stretchin' the imagination a bit, I must admit.... Possible Pattern #1: Ingrid and Barb were known for calling in "dead" when they didn't really feel like spending a day on the ole movie set. Jen seems to have hints of a similar developing pattern when 53 and 8 kids starts to feel overwhelming... Possible Pattern #2: Jen really enjoys watching two hot women breathing in her bed. (This, we have less "knowledge" about...but the graham cracker thing is pretty widely known...especially since she said it herself ) >My life-long desire is to meet up with a young Kate Hepburn >in my afterlife Possible Pattern #3: At 53, Jen's heart flutters now with lurid thoughts of her afterlife in youth and the youth of others....rather than an afterlife at 53, where everyone else is also just as they were when they weren't "still 'breathing'." OK....I give....if it's not one of these, I'll toss in the towel now. Am I even *close*?? ;) Patti, who just can't stop thinking about watching two hot women eating graham crackers in her bed (& wondering if it scares the cats) ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 23:25:03 -0400 From: "Martha Brandwene" Subject: Re: *etheridge* (SMLEC) MLE and the lilith fair Rhondda wrote: > >from what i recall, sarah asked MLE to be in the lilith fair this >year, but MLE didn't want to do it because she would only get to play >for 50 minutes. i think i remember reading this info from the last >chat transcript, which is on somebody's web site (i've forgotten >whose, though...help!).
