I don't believe that posession is a crime. My opinion is that liability exists when commercial transactions occur, and you should be held liable for any consequences of that commercial transaction. So... To continue your example... IF you had 2 tons of meth, then I DON'T care where you store it. It doesn't affect me. If you sell it to someone, and they say... get into a auto accident with me, I do think that I should be able to sue everyone involved INCLUDING YOU. (Perhaps it wasn't properly labelled for dosage, contraindications, and side-effects?) (Since I'm gonna shut up soon, I'll go more off topic... My opinion here is that drug laws do 2 things. 1) Provide a price support for the market. (The "Hey man, I'M taking a risk here..." thing) and 2) Allow a convienent excuse for warehousing people who couldn't find good jobs anyway. (They could have gotten a good lawyer and stayed out, otherwise...) peace Mike __________________________________________________________________________ - - I Miss Jerry | TECHNOLOGY: | For Non-commercial, - - - | No Place for Wimps! | home-use only. - - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- _ PGP Fingerprint: C43E 7FAB E5C6 873F 8531 8B24 DC98 0BC9 63F5 4005 __ ____ _______ ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.ecw.ca/mle/ ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 10:47:46 -0700 From: edgy@linkline.com (Allison Fraiberg) Subject: *etheridge* pronouns and past threads For those who are still interested in the pronoun thread of a few weeks ago; I know Joyce was and I figured some others might be as well. I got my compilation tape back and we watched it last night. The interviewer asks if the "subject" of Melissa's songs knows who "they" are. Melissa replies, "Yeah, I called him and..." A note for all Real Fans (tm): I'm not criticizing Melissa for saying this; I was just doing a little fact-checking since the discussion had appeared on the list. Based on the hair, I would have to say that the interview took place during the transition from "ME" to "B&C." The spikes were growing out, but some sort of dreadlock thing was happening (Joyce...please explain). I think the interview was from Much Music (which we now get with our new digital cable!) Oh, and watching all the old videos, performance clips, and interviews at once was great fun, especially "The Angels" and the transition from early Much Music perfomances and the later, but early, _Yes I Am_ stuff. Reminded me of the time Melissa said (and I paraphrase) that her video career essentially demonstrated a girl's search for hair. I think she's found it. ROFL! I saw that interview on a tape someone kindly made for me and thought I was losing my mind when I saw MLE's "dreadlocks." You can catch it again on Wednesday evening (don't remember the time). Her slow (piano only - FS) version of "Hold On" (mixed with personal experience relating to the lyrics) has always brought reluctant tears...but hearing the story behind it made me grab the whole box of Kleenex listening to it again. I thought it was interesting that her inspiration for "Sweet Surrender" was the film "Leaving Las Vegas"....where (totally paraphrased) "someone can actually love and accept you for all the bad things about you as well as the good." Of the stuff I hadn't seen before upon watching "Before They Were Rock Stars" on Melissa, I smiled at the several short shag/layered cuts she wore upon moving to LA in the 80's. :) ) Patti "Communication with the dead is only a little more difficult than communication with some of the living." -- Ashleigh Brilliant ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.ecw.ca/mle/ ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 21:42:45 -0800 (PST) From: Rhondda Ashby Subject: *etheridge* dread lock holiday Allison Fraiberg wrote: > Based on the hair, I would have to say that the interview took place > during the transition from "ME" to "B&C." Isn't this pretty much what was done with YLS? First song=YLS, the first rock single. Final track (number 10, of course )=TWIO, concert closer. Ballad single=IWTCO (stretching it), but I can't remember exactly which number track this is. Personally, I'd like to see an uptempo rocker that really shows off her scratch guitar technique (ala LTWID) end the CD. Unless that is what you meant by a "concert closer," since those type of songs are usually played in an encore. BTW, thanks to all who have been posting on the ME chatroom "sightings." Those of us with no chatroom capabilities appreciate it (at least this one does). Witness post from Deb Alley >she says that the movie is on hold....indefinately.... There's your answer! It's my guess that there's too much bickering about script writing and perhaps too much that can't be included in the MLE version because of material and rights that Joplin's family 'owns' (though it sounded as if the family had decided to bag their own verison of the biopic and it looked pretty good for MLE's flick for awhile...). I'll stick by my assumption that Julie's script just wasn't up to snuff for the directors/producers (hence the departure of the director originally slated) and neither MLE nor JC would back down and let someone else write it. jen--who has mixed feelings about the release of the movie. - -------- When a man gives his opinion he's a man. First of all, while Curve is an entertaining read (given that it's one of only a handful of lesbian-specific publications), the fact remains that it's still the 'People' of the lesbian world (meaning they're not the most reliable source of info). Since they are on a bi-monthly production schedule (at least they were when I subscribed a few years ago), their news is not always the most current/correct. Guitarist Carlos Santana heaped praise on them both at Wednesday's unveiling of the bronze sidewalk plaques. He said Hooker, who won a Grammy Award last week for his collaboration Don't Look Back with Van Morrison, has abundant God-given talent. "Your music is a sign to lift people's consciousness so we can truly believe we have peace, life, love and joy," Santana told dozens of fans. I remember this list as being very open and friendly in the past, so I hope I'll be able to jump right back into the fray without any difficulty. My site gets a lot of hits and you could get more activity as well! Thank you! I own only 3 of her albums, but I have numerous tapes made off the TV, such as duets and unplugged. Ok, semi-boots. The time I've been subscribed, this list has proven very entertaining and educating. I have come to realize I have a lot to learn about fanaticism. Hope I can contribute anyway. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to chat with everyone for too long, because I was at the end of a veerrryyy long table of people. Joyce and Rhonda, I really wanted to talk to you two info guru's a little more. Hopefully next time. But I have to say, I had a chance to talk with Kim and Krista because they were next to me. What a very very sweet couple, and I must tell everyone here. I got their CD and I couldn't stop playing it all night. It's definitely a MUST HAVE in anyone's collection. The lyrics and the harmonies are so awesome! I was playing it at work all night yesterday and everyone kept asking who it was because they liked it and wanted to get a copy. I sent them to her site. Click on over to her site and you can hear a couple of sound bytes. www.kimbaker.com Then there is Elizabeth White, who, unfortunately I didn't get a chance to chat with as much, but I got her CD as well. Another great one, I played that one all night as well. I have to be honest. Being a drummer I have never been particularly fond of an all acoustic CD. But her lyrics and voice are so beautiful and it was very soothing and I couldn't get enough of it as well. Another must have CD. She doesn't have a Web site yet. But if you want to order a copy, her address is Fuzzy Paw Records P.O. Box 2242 Livermore, CA, 94551 $15.00 I don't know if she charges S&H or not. Tell them Vicky sent you. Well this was my first real BAB meeting and everyone is so very nice. I had a great time. Hope to meet some more BABers at the Velvet Janes show. And of course, at the FF. Well I guess I better get some work done today, I have to make some money to fix that darn vette I bought and then wrecked 2 months later. It just went into the shop today. Just to give you an idea, Ani DiFranco headlined the four day festival, ably abetted by the wonderfully cute Dar Williams. I am now a solid fan of Dar's (love that song about Christians and Pagans and "When I was a Boy" tune) and am continuing to digest Ani's material with mixed feelings.......but there's not doubt in my mind after viewing three performances at Port Fairy - - Ani is not to be missed live, in any setting, let alone the fairly intimate Port Fairy type experience ! So come on Velvet Janes !!! - how about coming to the eastern side of Oz *before* your *next* visit to West Coast USA!!! Get a gig at Port Fairy 1999 or be square !!! Ohh, SOTW (ah! more acronyms, don't ya just love 'em? ;) ), I'm so excited ;). I have to agree with you Jacky. IMO (hey, I'm getting good at this) her first album was far and away her best. The others tend to lack the same kind of rawness I think. DYN is one of my favourate MLE songs also, it's hard to choose a favourate, but that's certainly one of them. You don't need a whole load of brain cells to figure out what the song's about. It's not what she's saying, it's how she's saying it. That's the thing about Melissa, she's got a way with words :) And I still find it amazing that someone with so much talent is so unknown over here in the UK. I think she needs a new manager. Her music possesses a lot of passion and power, and it has been a great inspiration during the daily struggles of life. :) I am also a big fan of Sarah and the Indigo Girls, in fact just last week some of my friends and myself were in San Francisco, and Sarah was to do a concert at San Jose State University, well during the day she performed at the Tower Records on Jones street I think it is. Unfortunately, I was not able to get in line quick enough, but my roommate was about 2 inches from her as she performed a few of her songs acousitcally. She(my roommate) said that it was really exciting, and that she talked a lot about some of her songs. Melissa, by far, is my favorite, and it is nice to be able to finally find others who feel the same. Thanks for this opportunity to share a few of my thoughts, take it easy everybody! Take care, Erin (aka "eek") ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.ecw.ca/mle/ ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 14:20:29 -0800 From: tanner@suntan.engr.sgi.com (Andrea Tan) Subject: *etheridge* NMEC & LONG: Just chatting > From: JLUCKY7 > I think Rhondda and I will both be there...as will Andrea > Tan. RIGHT, Andrea?! Ok, so I've been the absent BABer...how was I *suppose* to know you moved out here??? I'm still marveling at this teeny tiny world...first, Joyce slams me for an innocent comment I made to the list years ago, then she orders a card from this company I worked at, THEN she parties with MY softball team while I wasn't there! New Wave and punk was still rather big and the Brit reviewers made fun of Melissa for being a so-called "singer/songwriter." Blackwell and Island attempted, with every album, to break Melissa in the UK but for some goofy reason she just won't catch on there. Hello Patty and all other interested Melisters!! I read your question on the list. In Holland and for as far as I know also, I think in Germany, LTWID was released here as a cd-single. First time in May 1989 and the second time on special request from the Dutch people. There is said that Melissa had given her personal permission, to re-release it in 1992, after Melissa's concert in October 1992 was such a BIG succes. Only this time the live-version was "the single", it reached the 3 place in our top 40 list. I don't know if that's what you mean. It includes 3 other live tracks of the Roxy show in L.A.of October 1988. So if you're interested in a copy, e-mail me privately. Anyone catch the earlier part of that interview? It was E!'s > post-Oscar coverage. unfortunately, i did not catch MLE's interview on E!'s post-oscar special (which is really a drag because i was flipping back and forth between E! and the "today" show yesterday morning), but i did see a few brief snippets of MLE on this morning's repeat of yesterday's E! "news daily". there was a shot of ellen, anne, MLE, and JC with their arms around each other for a group photo-op. then, there was a brief snippet from what i'm assuming was the same interview that allison caught the tail end of. MLE replied that the special oscar moments for her was when matt and ben won, and that robin williams' winning was her favorite. finally, there was a couple of shots of ellen and anne showing off their anniversary gifts (necklace and earrings, respectively), and another one with those nutty kids, melissa and julie, laughingly putting their fingers behind ellen's and anne's heads as their pictures were being taken. as for MLE speaking for "four", i assumed that jules meant that MLE was speaking for ellen, anne, JC, and herself. anybody else? i also assumed that the academy awards' special would be repeated sometime this weekend, but i haven't been able to find it on my online TV guide. i'll let y'all know if i find anything further. also, keep your eyes open for E!'s "news weekend" broadcasts; there's sure to be some oscar coverage on that program. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Well, it's been ages since I've posted to this list. I guess I can blame it on law school, but it's more accurate to say that I just haven't had any MLE content to contribute. However, two separate MLE dreams this morning prompted me to post. Since I'm visiting my niece in NY for her first birthday in May, I've been dreaming about NY a lot. Therefore, the first dream had me walking down a NY street when a newsstand caught my eye. The front pages of both the The NY Post and the NY Daily News were plastered with MLE pictures. The pictures seemed strange to me because they looked to have been taken around the B&C era. Anyway, although I refuse to buy those tabloid "news"papers, I was about to break down and buy them to read about MLE when all of a sudden I was awakened by my telephone. Of course, it was a wrong number at 7:30 am. After going back to sleep, I found myself meeting MLE again in another dream. Apparently, whenever MLE plays Tampa, she makes sure to meet with me sometime before the concert. (This, of course, assured me that it was truly a dream.) Anyway, MLE and her female manager type person met me in a huge supermarket/mega department store. I almost didn't recognize her at first because of her hairstyle. Her hair kinda looked like Madonna's at the Academy Awards. We agreed to meet again at the concert venue, but before that could happen, my damn telephone rang again. It wasn't a wrong number that time, just bad timing. Speaking of wrong numbers, here's a word of advice to anyone getting a new phone number. Do not accept a home phone number with a double zero at the end. I made that mistake about two years ago and received wrong numbers at all times of the day and night for almost every type of business you could think of. I just moved and changed phone numbers, gladly leaving the old one behind. I believe > there has not been anyone like her." -- Melissa Etheridge she could be giving testimonials on other artists. i'm assuming that since some listers saw her speaking about madonna on ET that maybe this is a possible time that MLE might appear on the show. other possibilities: beatles (#1), bob dylan (#5), bruce springsteen (#27), U2 (#29), joni mitchell (#32), rod stewart (#71), and madonna (#86). these are the ones that jumped out at me, but she could pop up just about anywhere. it might be a good idea to tape the whole damn show! because i needed to figure out when VH1 is actually showing this during the hours that it's available in my area (4 am - 4 pm), i created this handy dandy viewing guide. print this out and tape it to your TV. :-) disclaimer: don't forget to check the times in your area (these are PST, so you'll most likely have to add 3 hours for EST). * * * * * begin viewing guide here * * * * * 100 Greatest Artists of Rock & Roll Program Type: Music Special / Rock The top 100 rock 'n' roll artists of all time, as selected by a poll of music video performers.
