(For newly updated information on the campaign, see http://www.hrc.org/feature1/hiads.html.) Ellen DeGeneres herself was present with her partner, Anne Heche, and her mother, Betty DeGeneres, and Melissa Etheridge and partner Julie Cypher were also there. The documentary, which was then broadcast on BRAVO with the sponsorship of gay-owned RSVP Travel, examines the year's effort that culminated in the April 30, 1997 coming out "Puppy Episode." DeGeneres said she had no resentments against ABC, who "allowed me to do it. [But] I was a bad litmus test. People stopped watching the show. I lost my job. I've been through a dark, dark time. Rock and the Environment is a provocative interview show in which major rock artists discuss environmental issues and their ideas on how to help save the earth. IOW, it's not a recent show. i think MLE interviews don henley during the show, but i could be mistaken. ===== on another note, i saw 2 MLE-related commercials this weekend: during VH1's "Pop-up Video" show on saturday morning, i saw a commercial for "Tammy Wynette...Remembered". it included the pictures from the booklet and played snippets of some of the artists' covers, including MLE's. they flashed a URL for the tribute, http://www.tammytribute.com, during the commercial, but all this site does is flash the artists' names and then shows a picture of the album cover. i got an error message when i clicked on the album cover. i think the commercial suggested that you could order the album through the web site, but i haven't discovered how to do that yet. finally! i saw most of MLE's LifeBeat commercial while i was flipping around during the commercials on saturday evening - the one that shows several shots of her playing her guitar and then she says [paraphrased], "When you're having sex, be sure to use a latex condom or a dental dam or whatever!" [her "whatever" cracked me up! ] the spot was broadcast during CNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" show at approximately 8:50 pm PT. what a way to spend your saturday night! *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Today this showed up and I thought it was pretty cool. I thought I'd post it here just in case anybody is interested in supporting a gay stock. I purchased 20,000 shares this afternoon: Financial Highlights: Triangle Broadcasting, Inc. (OTC BB : GAAY) Shares Outstanding (Aug 31, 1998) : 19.4 Million Shares Current Market Capitalization (Current Stock Price of $0.05) - $970,000 Stockholders’ Equity (June 30, 1998) - $2,233,470 - Equity per Share : $0.115 At current stock price of $0.05 we feel this stock to be tremendous BUY at these levels. Currently there are 19.4 million shares outstanding, this gives a market capitalization of only $970,000 - a modest investment could yield enormous rewards for the investors who entered on the ground floor. At current price levels $1000 would purchase 20,000 shares. "Mark Twain said: "The secret to success is - find out where the people are going and get there first". We feel that Triangle Broadcasting, Inc. (OTC BB : GAAY) has followed that adage to a T. Triangle Broadcasting Company, Inc. (OTC BB : GAAY) is launching itself to a right future. They are the first mass media company to target gays and lesbians on a national level. Successful companies always take one step at a time so that they never skip over something important that will haunt them in the future. First, Triangle Broadcasting Company, Inc. did extensive surveys. They found out what were the people's preferences. They also figured out what would be the most strategic way to market their product and what programs would be received well by both the gay and lesbian communities and the mass market. They set up their programming and found what cities they should target first. Triangle Broadcasting Company, Inc. is going to start in 15 cities. They have chosen 15 cities with large gay and lesbian populations. After they have gained acceptance in these markets, they will expand to a national level. They can already be received by over 10,000 stations in the United States and Canada. Triangle Broadcasting Company, Inc. will not expand until they have made a presence in the markets that they are focusing on. Triangle Broadcast Company, Inc. hand-picked it's management infrastructure. They took broadcast executives who had extensive knowledge about the industry. Gay and lesbian nightclub owners were brought in to help formulate the programming. Business advisors help with the complexities of running a business. And last but not least real estate people help with the planning of which communities would be their first targets. After all this was set up they contacted advertising executives of major companies throughout the United States and Canada. The response was overwhelming. With all the above factors, and the fact that advertisers are already lining up, success is almost inevitable. This is truly an amazing company with nothing but positive opportunities in front of it. http://www.stock-pick.net/gaay/index.html ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 11:21:10 +1000 From: "Lisa Borthwick" Subject: *etheridge* NMEC - Xena on SNL Vivian & Xena fans, Hi there.....still lurking around Down Under :-) Anyways, I am on several Xena lists and the word is that Lucy Lawless will be *hosting* SNL on 17 October. A couple of weeks ago I transcribed MLE & JC's GMA appearance of 9/17/98 and posted it to the list. Unbeknownst to me until noted by the ever-vigilant Ms. Ashby, MEIN posted it on their website a day or two later and Rhondda gave me a heads-up about it...and that it was being touted as "A Fan's Transcript." I cruised by for a look, and sure enough, there it was...word for word, comma for comma (but I take NO credit for misspelling Julie's name in their headline ). At first it didn't bother me, as I would've given them my permission anyway, and especially knowing that there are plenty of folks out there who didn't have access to the broadcast who might enjoy reading a transcript. But Rhondda had a point -- and a strong point -- about the principle of the matter, reminding me of how many times MEIN has taken obvious advantage of MElister generosity in postings with nary a word of appropriate credit -- and that in my case, it was so inCREDibly overt and blatant -- there *was* no other place it could've come from. And I rethunk it all...and I do care. This practice has been going on unchanged for many years. So I wrote to the webmaster at MEIN, expressing my disappointment to learn that my hard work had been posted on their main page as their prominent headline without even contacting me about it before or after, which to me just wasn't very professional or ethical, or even honorable to Melissa's philosophy (and they exist to speak for Melissa) of "Speak True." To my surprise, the webmaster wrote to me several days later, expressing what I felt was an exceedingly sincere apology and a hope that we can "start fresh"....she explained that an "inexperienced" person gave her the text as a news item, and it was her desire to correct the situation immediately, stating that she'd posted a credit to me upon writing me back, and she wanted to know if I wanted to add anything else to the credit (which I didn't). I really wasn't expecting to hear anything back from her or anyone at MEIN, so the fact that she took time to take the action that she did and then to let me know about it as she did is something I respect. I wrote her back and thanked her for her apology and for the change she had made on the website to reflect it. In my email back to her, I took a moment to express to her -- with the care to state my opinions as my *own* perceptions and not as any sort of spokeperson for *anyone* on this list, I'd never dream of trying to "speak" for such a diverse group -- as a sort of heads-up....that past experience among some and many MElisters supports a perception that MEIN does not have a clear pro-active policy to verify the true source of its information before posting it as their own work on their website, and this simple management oversight has, for many, negatively affected MEIN's credibility. I expressed that, IMO, information that is posted without any credit seems to imply that it is "official" information from MLE or her suits, and a *lot* of very generous MElister info has been posted as MEIN's without credit or even simple contact over the years, such as mine. I suggested that, as the person with the high-profile responsibility for what is ultimately posted on the MEIN site, she at least subscribe to this list and find out for herself what is originally from here and what is not before posting it on the site as MEIN's....after all, a practice of active indifference doesn't necessarily mean a presence of ill-will, just an absence of caring. I've not held any expectation that I would hear anything further from the webmaster or anyone else at MEIN, and I haven't. While Glenna pointed out at the time that it was great to speak up, she too was a bit skeptical that it would bring about any real change in MEIN's practices....a sentiment Rhondda and I have shared as well. However....we all know how consistently diligent and generous Rhondda is in posting significant MEC with such dedicated regularity -- WELLLLLL....Rhondda discovered Friday evening that MEIN posted a news article about Melissa & Julie's HRC Dinner appearance and...and...without even so much as *asking* Rhondda.... *CREDITED* her with it!! (Yup, Rhondda, I heard the massive West Coast THUD of your fainting dead away, but I just thought it was thunder ) I think it's just so **utterly** fitting that MEIN's debut VOLUNTARY credit should go to *rhondda*!!!! I personally really don't think that there is anyone on this list who deserves more of MEIN's respect than our own Rhondda -- the woman sustains us in reliable *good* MEC (even when there ain't much! )! My sincere thanks to Rhondda for her steady support, encouragement, and nudging (ok, so she *was* a bit pushy! ;) ) to stand up and NOT be complacent. CD Now and Music Boulevard accept payment via credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover, Diner's Club, and debit cards with the VISA or Mastercard logo for CD Now; American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, Visa for Music Boulevard) and check/money order (with some restrictions), while Tower Records only accepts payment via credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express). here are the URLs for these vendors: CD Now - http://www.cdnow.com Music Boulevard - http://www.musicblvd.com/cgi-bin/tw/793244907710559_0_main.txt Tower Records - http://www.towerrecords.com/prd.i/pgen/tower/H69VLECW2GSH2JPQ00L1RH5G8J9PRWGJ/main.html these releases are listed with MLE's catalog or you might have to search for them by album or song title. good luck! :-) *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I thought the shirt was cool, bright colors, looked like it was made just for her. She looked happy, relaxed. Did you notice when she said "wow" and the hand gestures when talking of when Julie delivered Bailey? Melissa is so cute. I am probably projecting, but I think Melissa is afraid of having a baby out of her body after watching a birth in living color. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't > it the new director that decided not to cast her? actually, with the exception of this Wall of Sound tidbit, *none* of the recent articles have stated exactly why MLE is no longer playing janis. on 08/27/98, i posted the reuters article announcing the new director, which stated: > So far, however, no one has been cast to play Joplin, the > raspy-voiced blues singer who died at the age of 27 in 1970. > Rocker Melissa Etheridge was previously set to make her screen > debut in the picture, singing Joplin's songs herself. > > With the competing project now dormant, however, the producers may > be in a better position to obtain rights to Joplin's original > recordings, which would allow them to use a proven actress in the > lead role. the last sentence in this excerpt led me to believe that the producers (one of whom is JC, btw) might be in a better position to recast the movie because the savoca-directed version is in turnaround. it appeared that the article's writer was implying that MLE *may* have been dropped from the project by the producers because she's not "a proven actress", but that's just my own inference; the article didn't state a reason definitively one way or another why she's no longer playing the role. on 08/28/98, patti posted an article from MTV online, which stated: > Etheridge's agent at CAA says that even though there have been > new developments in the project, the singer is not currently > attached to it. > > Etheridge had been previously cast as the legendary blues singer > who died at the age of 27 from a heroin overdose. > > Her life partner, Julie Cypher, is still on board as the movie's > producer, in conjunction with Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom > Rosenberg. > > The musician was previously thought to be a lock for the pic, in > light of her confessed love of Joplin's music, as well as Cypher's > involvement in the "Piece of My Heart" script, which she helped > co-write. even though this MTV online article was entitled, "Melissa Etheridge Passes On Joplin Film", it never stated *if* she truly did leave of her own accord. in fact, it never stated a reason at all, but left it open for interpretation and speculation. initially, MLE "was previously thought to be a lock" for the role, but presently she's "not currently attached" to the project. obviously, *something* happened to change her status from a sure thing to now no longer being involved. what that something is, though, is still a mystery, since this article didn't state a definitive reason why she's no longer attached to the project either. to muddy the waters further, MLE mentioned the joplin movie briefly in her two recent MEIN chats (08/04/98 and 09/09/98). from the 08/04/98 chat: > Snuffy < preview the Janis film....Is that still on? - - snip - > *V*Melissa < wings2fly hey...what happened to the janis flick? > *V* Melissa Ah jeez...hollywood...it makes me crazy..I don't know! > *V* Melissa I really don't > wings2fly can't wait till it gets straightened out (no pun) > *D* et= One minute left... > *V* Melissa Me too...I would just like to either do it or go on! in the first chat (before the reuters and MTV online articles were published), MLE seemed frustrated with the movie not being made yet, while in the second chat (after the articles' publication), it appeared that she's still attached to the project, but that the movie was taking longer than expected for some mysterious reason. so, IMO, the public story is that MLE's no longer playing janis, while in the relative privacy of the chats, she's in limbo, waiting (im)patiently for something to happen. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I realize how lucky I am to have the kind of genuine support in my life that I have in being who I really am, knowing that I am truly loved and supported every day, even if being who I am is not viewed as "acceptable" to some, or even many....and how important it is -- especially with the dialogue this hate crime has opened in the workplace, among friends, and elsewhere -- to speak up and to take a stand for what is right with conviction toward real change and with compassion for Matthew's family. There is nothing more real than what happened to Matthew.....ICHBY. I haven't included the whole article here, but this one from Planet Out does include info on a way to go beyond feeling the outrage, shaking our heads, and saying the words to ourselves and to each other of our disgust and sadness....we can give those words action and a meaningful voice, even if only small. In following the news and reading the many reports, I find it just aMAZing that *anyone* could act in such a savage and brutal way toward another human being -- seemingly out of fear and insecurity and "embarrassment." And by so many individuals together. No "self-defense" here....just the need for control. It's mind-boggling to me that there are people out there who think this way -- that "it wasn't meant to be a hate crime....it just got out of hand." How the hell does beating a human being into unconsciousness, bashing a 21-year-old man's skull in -- so much so that surgery was not even an option -- with the butt of a gun and leaving him lashed to a fence "like a scarecrow" for 18 hours in near-freezing temperatures -- oh, btw, taking his shoes *so he couldn't walk home* (??!?) - -- become something so dismissively inhuman as to describe it as "it just got out of hand"??!?? We're talkin' two adult men, their adult girlfriends, AND one of the men's (yes, an adult) fathers endorsing it to the end! Not a one said *anything* to stop it or to disown it immediately and go to the authorities -- indeed, they did everything to cover it up and now even try to defend it as something very different than the obvious....something understandable in people like that as a *normal* reaction to another (muchless gay) human being. Absolutely no conscience about it. Even *after* getting caught. It is an old and practiced defense - -- for millenia now -- to duck personal responsibility by claiming that the victim "deserved" it somehow....this "homosexual panic" defense. What kind of fundamental insecurity would drive many individuals to exert such barbarian behavior together on another human being? Gayness?!?? Mind-boggling, the callous coldness and lack of conscience in taking the life of an innocent young man, one who clearly touched many lives around him and his family with warmth, tolerance, and respect. Instead of a movie or a dinner out or other pleasures of life that I might enjoy this week, I'm sending what I might spend on myself to help Matthew's family defray the no-doubt enormous medical bills and expenses associated with Matthew's care during the last many days and to speak my support for Matthew's family in knowing that people really do care. Matthew can't ever go out or come out again. Shocked and saddened, Patti "If you ever see my being beaten senseless by a bunch of cops, please put the camera down and help my ass out!" - Bobcat Goldthwait - ------------------ http://www.planetout.com/pno/news/article.html?1998/10/12/1 Bashed WY Student Dies Monday, October 12, 1998 / 04:13 PM Openly gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard died shortly before 1am on October 12 of the injuries he received in a widely-publicized assault October 7. Two men had already been charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery, and each is held on a $100,000 bond; their girlfriends, charged as accessories after the fact, are under $30,000 bonds, one is at large and the other in jail. Police have indicated that the charges will now be upgraded from attempted murder to first-degree murder, which in Wyoming could mean the death penalty. Shepard, only 5'2", was severely beaten, including having his skull smashed probably by the butt of a gun, leading to brain injuries and a coma from which he never emerged; he was then tied to a fence and left for hours on a night of near-freezing temperatures before being discovered, ending any hope which early treatment might have offered for his recovery. Previous reports that he was also burned were not confirmed by physicians treating him. Shepard's parents issued a statement October 10 saying, "Matthew is a very special person, and everyone can learn important lessons from his life. All of us who know Matthew see him as he is, a very kind and gentle soul. He is a strong believer in humanity and human rights. He is a trusting person who takes everybody at face value and he does not see the bad side of anyone. His one intolerance is when people don't accept others as they are. He has always strongly felt that all people are the same-regardless of their sexual preference, race or religion.... We know he believes that all of us are part of the same family called Humanity, and each and everyone of us should treat all people with respect and dignity, and that each of us has the right to live a full and rewarding life. That is one lesson which we are very certain he would share with you, if he could." Shepard, a political science major who spoke three languages, had been looking forward to a career in diplomacy to further his goal of advancing human rights. Donations in his memory and to defray his medical expenses can be sent to: Fund for the Benefit of Matthew Shepard, c/o First National Bank, P.O. Box 578, Fort Collins, CO 80522, account number 1926083. The father and girlfriend of suspect Aaron McKinney appear to be paving the way for a homosexual panic defense for him. Kristen Price told reporters that Shepard had humiliated McKinney by flirting with him at the Fireside Lounge -- the same bar from which police say the suspects enticed Shepard into their truck on the night of the beating by telling him they were gay - -- and that McKinney and suspect Russell Henderson had only intended to get back at Shepard for that by robbing him. "It wasn't meant to be a hate crime," she insisted. "They just wanted to rob him." The men did take Shepard's wallet, credit cards and shoes (so he couldn't walk home), and had apparently tied him up so they could return to his home and burglarize it. She said that, "It just got out of hand." Price and Henderson's girlfriend, Chastity Palsey, admitted to having initially lied to police, trying to provide an alibi for their boyfriends, and had also helped dispose of the men's bloodied clothing. Price denies that any of the four, who are all close friends, hate gays. McKinney's father, while admitting there was no excuse for the violence that had taken place, said that Shepard had "pushed himself onto him and that he had embarrassed him and Russ in front of all their friends and everybody at the Fireside." He also said, "Had this been a heterosexual these two boys decided to take out and rob, this never would have made the national news. Now my son is guilty before he's even had a trial." At the request of prosecutors, records in the case have been sealed and a gag order placed on the parties involved. Imagine how many men would be in trouble if every one of them who ever flirted with or humiliated a woman was treated this way. Hmmm it wasn't meant to be a hate crime...Do we only rob beat them in the head and tie up people we like? And if I remember correctly, in this country we are punished for the wrong we do, not for what we only intended to do. For instance, two children are in critical condition because a driver swerved around the crossing guard here on my street and hit the kids. Of course he didn't mean to hit them. He only intended to save a bit of time. But his actions resulted in the hospitalization of these two boys. He was late to work where he may feel humiliated in front of his co-workers. Sad, sad for all involved. Maybe these boys didn't mean to kill Matt Shepard. Too bad. That was the result of thier actions. The night before his brutal beating, he called one of his friends from Salisbury, NC to tell him about his excitement upon finding his weight was 103. Matt was overcoming anorexia. He had moved several times because he felt unsafe. In Laramie, he felt safe and protected. It was a college town, and therefore fairly liberal, despite the rest of the state. He no longer felt he had to live in constant fear. Having had several friends bashed and/or raped, I know that it's one of the single most humiliating things a person has to go through. My best friend was gang raped and badly beaten this past summer, and told a grand total of 3 people of his pain. His ex-boyfriend was whipped with a chain and left to die the summer before. None of my gay friends, or myself for that matter, can go home and feel safe. Why do we live in a society where homosexuals must live in fear? I urge everyone here to discuss with your local representatives the passing of the Hate Crimes Act of 1998, which will allow for greater sentencing of criminals who commit hate crimes against all people, including African-Americans, women, gays, lesbians, etc. This cannot go on. Draft email: Dear XXXXX: I am writing to urge you to pass the Hate Crimes Prevention Act (H.R.3081 and S.1529). As you know, Matthew Shepard was brutally tied up, tortured, pistol-whipped and then left to die in Wyoming because he was gay. Wyoming does not have a hate crimes law - and only 21 states and the District of Columbia include sexual orientation-based crimes in their hate crimes statutes. The FBI may not have jurisdiction to investigate the Shepard case without passage of the Hate Crimes Act. You can change that sad fact. With hate crimes against gay men and lesbians on the rise last year, while crime overall decreased, it is imperative that Congress stand up to hate and violence and pass the Hate Crimes Prevention Act now. Thank you, NAME AND ADDRESS Hope this is helpful. Liv _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Speaking about the incident, R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe said that homophobia is alive and well in America. "I don't think there's been an acceptance of homosexuality or queerness on a mass scale in this country to start with," Stipe told MTV News via phone on Tuesday. "It's one thing when it's entertainment based, when it's Ellen or someone like myself, who's presenting, you know, a very different side to entertainment. If it's something that can be categorized by television, or music, or the arts, but in day to day, I would say the homophobia still exists." [28.8 RealVideo] Meanwhile, singer and longtime activist Melissa Etheridge called the violent attack on Shepard a ghastly consequence of the change that must happen inside people's minds. "Nothing in our history has ever come about, no change has ever come about without great resistance and violent resistance to it," Etheridge told MTV News on Tuesday. "And then our children's children look back and go, 'What was that? You mean they were lynching black men in trees? What were they talking about?' And my grandchildren will go, 'Oh my God, they tied up a man like a scarecrow and left him for dead because he was gay?' It will just seem so hideously unthinkable." [28.8 RealAudio] Shepard's funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Casper, Wyoming, and on Monday night, 800 people attended an outdoor service for Shepard at the University of Wyoming. GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign are planning a candlelight vigil on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at 7 p.m. on Wednesday to call on Congress to pass a hate crime bill. Across the country, gay and lesbian organizations are concerned about a serious upsurge in hate crimes and gay-bias attacks. On Saturday at Colorado State University, not far from the Poudre Valley Hospital where Shepard lay dying, a homecoming parade float displayed a scarecrow wearing an anti-gay message. In New York's Greenwich Village, six gay-bashing incidents have occurred in the last month. Jeffrey Montgomery, executive director of the Triangle Foundation in Detroit, met with Michigan State students, and believes that "college campuses are dangerous places for gay people." Shepard's parents have set up a fund in their son's name. Donations can be sent to: Fund for the Benefit of Matthew Shepard C/O First National Bank P.O. Death By DARLENE SUPERVILLE .c The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House pledged Thursday to fight prejudice and intolerance as it voiced outrage over the beating death of a gay University of Wyoming student. ``We cannot lie down, we cannot bury our heads and we cannot sit on our hands,'' said Rep. Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo., sponsor of a resolution that passed by voice vote. ``We will not stand for the arbitrary killing of other people due to any hateful act of intolerance,'' added Cubin, whose two sons knew the 21-year-old victim. Matthew Shepard died Monday at a Colorado hospital, five days after being found pistol-whipped and tied to a fence post in near-freezing temperatures outside Laramie, Wyo. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., a co-sponsor, said protection is needed for gays and lesbians who live their daily lives in fear of being violently attacked or killed. ``Matthew Shepard's murder proves their fear is not unjustified,'' she said. President Clinton, meanwhile, opened a White House conference on school violence Thursday by calling once more for a new hate crimes law and by ordering the Education Department's civil rights office to step up its enforcement to stop discrimination and harassment of students. ``We have got to do more to teach our young people to have tolerance and respect for one another,'' the president said. Shepard's death has become a rallying point for gays and lesbians across the country seeking state and federal protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Legislation pending in the House and Senate would broaden existing law to include offenses motivated by gender, disability and sexual orientation. It also would make it easier for federal authorities to prosecute such bias crimes. Democrats and Republicans urged Congress to act swiftly. ``May the meaning of his life be that we pass a hate crimes act in this Congress before we leave,'' House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., said of Shepard. The bill is H.Res. 597. Congress' last day for the year is Friday October 16 - - so we need to act now, and close them down all day long. Congress has been sitting on the Hate Crimes Prevention Act for over a year. Pass it now before the Congressional session is over!" 2) Send this email to as many friends as possible, urging them to act. 3) If you have a Web site, we would ask that you post a new home page all day Friday - which we provide below - honoring Matthew and calling on everyone visiting your site to call Sen. Lott and Rep. Gingrich immediately. The html text for the page is included below. A FINAL WORD: Matthew Shepard may be gone, but we refuse to let his too short life and untimely death be in vain. No exact start date has been announced, and although Melissa Etheridge has held talks about starring - and her companion, Julie Cypher, is one of four screenwriters on the film - it appears that Etheridge (busy completing an album and planning a tour) will not be available any time soon to play Joplin in the $35 million to $40 million film. Meanwhile, a lower-budget movie starring Lili Taylor, to be directed by Nancy Savoca and co-produced by Jonathan Demme's production company, is also on hold. That picture, largely based on a collection of letters titled _Love, Janis_, has the blessing of the Joplin family, which granted access to master recordings of such key Joplin-penned songs as "Me and Bobby McGee," "Mercedes Benz," "Down on Me" and "Move Over" (which Taylor would lip-sync). Principals from the competing projects discussed combining their efforts, but negotiations have broken off. Paramount, home to "Piece of My Heart," declined comment, as did producer Tom Rosenberg of Lakeshore Productions. "I would really love to see a film that uses Janis' voice," says Joplin's sister, Laura Joplin, "because clearly the woman communicated . . .[and] should sing her own music. It's not like it's dated." well, while janis co-wrote "Mercedes Benz", i know that she didn't write "Me and Bobby McGee" (kris kristofferson did). i'm not sure about "Down on Me" and "Move Over" though. OK, two interesting items of note: 1) this article doesn't state that MLE is out of the picture, but that she just doesn't have the time *right now*, and 2) the suits from the two projects discussed collaborating, but those talks have ended. the plot thickens... *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Ray Liotta was starring as Sinatra, but another person who is known as a Sinatra sound-alike did the singing while Liotta lip-synched. I wondered whether the Joplin movies couldn't get together and do the same thing: Lili Taylor (I keep thinking of Lili Thomlin--wouldn't *that* be a hoot!) could do the acting and MLE could do the singing. That would be less time for MLE, but she could still put out a soundtrack for the movie, and the directors could have their experienced actor. This probably wouldn't fly with the Joplin family, given the quote shown above. Is Janis' music "dated?" Apparently the people doing the Sinatra film thought his music was dated. I'm sure their are many people who feel differently. Personally, I'd like to see the two projects join forces. But they just didn't ask me! :) Sharon ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 13:18:40 EDT From: CalifiaFan@aol.com Subject: *etheridge* NMEC -- my address change Hey there, just a quick note . . . In case you haven't already heard, here is the press release. Needless to say, I am deeply saddened, angered, and stunned by the actions and heartlessness of those in power. How they can be proud of this just defies my understanding. "The House document attacks the hate crimes bill as being a part of "the President's big-government agenda," and calls the death of the legislation "a win for conservative priorities."" WIRED STRATEGIES For Immediate Release Oct 20, 1998 - 6:25PM EDT Contact: John Aravosis, 202/328-5707, john@wiredstrategies.com HOUSE REPUBLICANS BRAG THEY KILLED HATE CRIMES BILL Contradict Sen. Lott's claim that bill would die because of no time Washington, DC - In a document just obtained by Wired Strategies, the House Republican Conference (an arm of the US House of Representatives Republican leadership) is taking credit for having "stopped" the hate crimes bill. The House leadership document contradicts claims from Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott's staff that the Hate Crimes Protection Act would not pass because Congress had run out of time. Millions of Americans, and citizens of the world, reacted in shock, sadness and anger at the recent torture and death of 21-year-old college freshman Matthew Shepard. Shepard was abducted, pistol-whipped, strung up as though crucified, and then left to die for 18 hours on a cold Wyoming road two weeks ago. In a spontaneous show of anger and support, nearly 100 vigils have taken place around the US and Canada to honor Shepard, highlight the menace of hate crimes, and demand that Congress immediately pass hate crimes legislation. Concerned individuals across the US and from as far as Zimbabwe, Australia, and Russia sent emails to the United States Congress, the Wyoming Governor, and Web sites devoted to Matthew Shepard's memory, expressing their concern about the Shepard case, and the need to pass hate crimes legislation. In addition, Americans nationwide, and in countries as far as Hong Kong, telephoned US members of Congress over the last several days to demand passage of the bill. The House document attacks the hate crimes bill as being a part of "the President's big-government agenda," and calls the death of the legislation "a win for conservative priorities." Under a section entitled "Reinventing Big-government -- Presidential Priorities the Congress Stopped", the House leadership lists: "'Hate crime' proposals that criminalize motive rather than punish violent crime." In a phone call this past Friday, Senator Lott's staff told a supporter that the legislation would die because it was simply too late to bring it up this year - the staffer gave no indication of the partisan strategy that now seems to be the reason for the bill's death. The decision to kill the legislation came on the heels of a new Time/CNN poll released last Saturday finding that 75% of Americans think the problem of violence against homosexuals is serious across the country. "The House leadership has dishonored the memory of Matthew Shepard for partisan political gain," said John Aravosis, an Internet consultant who has been maintaining a Web site about the Shepard case . "It's incredible that House Republicans would brag about killing a bill that protects the disabled, women and gay people from beating brutalized by hate," he added. "Hate is not a family value, but it seems to be a conservative one," continued Aravosis. "This wasn't a partisan issue, it was about the savage murder of a kid that shocked millions of Americans, both Republicans and Democrats," Aravosis added, "Is that all Matt's death meant to Gingrich - a chance to slam the President? Is he that out of touch?" Who is starring in it? dermot mulroney plays the leader of a group of teenage runaways. he falls in love with laura flynn boyle's character, another runaway. there are quite a few famous actors in the movie, and many of them play cameo roles, like will smith, ricki lake, nancy mckeon, etc. the movie was directed by marc rocco, who was the original director attached to "Piece of My Heart" and was the executive producer of "Teresa's Tattoo" (JC's campy movie). at this point, rocco still has co-writing credit on "Piece of My Heart" along with JC and 2 other writers. "Where the Day Takes You" is a good movie, but rather dark and depressing. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Ellen: "It didn't hurt k.d." MLE: "It did not hurt k.d.!" Ellen: "It didn't hurt Martina." MLE: "It did not hurt Martina!" Ellen: "But that's all that's done it really." [MLE finishes playing and playfully punches/smacks Ellen in the shoulder.] during the song, you can hear the studio audience and MLE cracking up. at one of the "Ellen" tapings earlier in the year, i saw what i assumed was the full version of the "coming out blues song". they often showed musical clips or bloopers to pass the time in between scenes. i would have taken notes, but i was so intent on watching the monitor at the time, that there was no way i could do that! :-) *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? In the wake of Matthew's murder and the "non-action" defeat of the hate crimes bill, this statement gives me hope and encouragement to keep fighting for a loving future. I hope it does the same for you. Martha This is attributed to a Chaplain at Trinty College. _______________________________________________ Chaplain's Reflection I saw on the news today that Matthew Shepard died. He was the 22 year old man from Wyoming who was beaten and tortured and left to die for no reason other than he was a homosexual. This tragic murder has raised a national debate again, the kind of periodic soul-searching our society goes through whenever a crime of hate startles us into awareness. The burning of Black churches, the bombing of innocent people, the death of a shy young man from Wyoming: these events suddenly shake us out of complacency and remind us that fear, prejudice and rage are always the shadows just beyond the light of our reason. And so people suddenly start to speak out. There are voices of outrage and grief. Voices of sorrow and demands to know why such a thing could happen. And predictibly, there are also defensive voices: the governor of Wyoming trying to explain why his state has no laws to protect people from hate crimes and the leadership of what is called the Christian "right wing" trying to explain why their national ads against homosexuality don't influence people to commit such violence against gays and lesbians. In the days to come, these many voices will fill our media and the cultural consciousness it imprints until we are once again lulled into the more familiar patterns of our lives, dozing off as a nation until the next tragedy rings the alarm of despair. As the chaplain for our own community, I would like to invite us all to consider Matthew's death in another way. Not through the clamour or denials, not through the shouts or cries of anger: but rather, through the silence of his death, the silence of that young man hanging on his cross of pain alone in the emptiness of a Wyoming night, the silence that ultimately killed him as surely as the beatings he endured. Silence killed Matthew Shepard. The silence of Christians who know that our scriptures on homosexuality are few and murky in interpretation and far outweighed by the words of a savior whose only comment on human relationships was to call us to never judge but only to love. The silence of well meaning educated people who pretend to have an enlightened view of homosexuality while quietly tolerating the abuse of gays and lesbians in their own communities. The silence of our elected officials who have the authority to make changes but prefer to count votes. The silence of the majority of "straight" Americans who shift uncomfortably when confronted by the thought that gays and lesbians may be no different from themselves, save for the fact that they are walking targets for bigotry, disrespect, cheap humor, and apparently, of murder. Crimes of hate may live in shouts of rage, but they are born in silence. Here at Trinity, I hope we will all listen to that silence. Before we jump to decry Matthew's senseless death or before we seek to rationalize it with loud disclaimers: I hope we will just hear the silence. A young man's heart has ceased to beat. Hear the silence of that awful truth. It is the silence of death. It is the silence that descends on us like a shroud. At Trinity, as in Wyoming, we are men and women surrounded by the silence of our own fear. Our fear of those who are different. Our fear of being identified with the scapegoat. Our fear of taking an unpopular position for the sake of those who can not stand alone. Our fear of social and religious change. Our fear comes in many forms but it always comes silently. A whispered joke. A glance to look away from the truth. A quick shake of the head to deny any complicity in the pain of others. These silent acts of our own fear of homosexuality are acted out on this campus every day just as they are acted out every day in Wyoming. Through silence, we give ourselves permission to practice what we pretend to abhor. With silence, we condemn scores of our neighbors to live in the shadows of hate. In silence, we observe the suffering of any group of people who have been declared expendable by our society. As a person of faith, I will listen, as we all will, to the many voices which will eulogize Matthew Shepard. I will carry that part of our national shame on my shoulders. But I will also listen to the silence which speaks much more eloquently still to the truth behind his death. I will listen and I will remember. And I will renew my resolve never to allow this silence to have the last word. Not for Matthew. Not for gay men or lesbian women. Not for any person in our society of any color or condition who has been singled out for persecution. Not in my church. Not in my nation. Not in Wyoming. And not at Trinity College. ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ End of etheridge-digest V2 #170 ******************************* From: etheridge-digest To: etheridge-digest@esosoft.com Subject: etheridge-digest V2 #171 Date: October 24, 1998 1:58 AM etheridge-digest Saturday, October 24 1998 Volume 02 : Number 171 *etheridge* Curious [Monicca ] *etheridge* Pop Culture Personalities Voice Opinions on the Clinton-Lewinsky-Starr [Indigo] Re: *etheridge* Curious [CalifiaFan@aol.com] Re: *etheridge* Curious [TahmeHawk@aol.com] *etheridge* biography author ["Sarah T. "Vote down this inquisition," urges Rolling Stone founding editor Jann S. Wenner in an editorial that calls for Congress to get back to the business of government and address the needs of our country and the world. The November 12th issue of Rolling Stone hits newsstands on Tuesday, October 27, 1998. "...the bottom line is your vote," Rolling Stone's Wenner proclaims, adding, "We say that we are fed up with this inquisition into the sexual lives of our leaders, and to hell with the torturers." In the magazine's special issue, "we have raised our own voice as loudly as we can," writes Wenner. Rolling Stone's special "Clinton Conversation" provides a forum for many notable figures from our pop culture to express their opinions on President Clinton, Kenneth Starr, Monica Lewinsky and impeachment. Proclaims Stevie Wonder, "Ten years ago, people were screaming about the explicit lyrics in rap music. Today...those same people have no problem putting explicit information on the Internet...for any child to see. There's something wrong with that picture. I'm glad I'm blind and can't see it." Sean Lennon states, "I think he should have resigned a while ago. That would have been the honorable thing to do." And U2's Bono urges, "Stop it -- America is better than this." A number of influential musicians, poets, actors, writers and filmmakers speak out in Rolling Stone and offer their own unique insights into the Clinton- Lewinsky-Starr drama, among them: Melissa Etheridge -- "I think it's about time America realizes that we're all human. And that white, middle-aged men are not more perfect than anybody else." David Byrne -- "I think he's a lousy president, I think he's scum, I think bombing those countries is a criminal act. But I don't think this affected his ability to do his job." Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine -- "The scandal is a great opportunity to block campaign-finance reform, avoid raising the minimum wage, ignore the farm crisis and allow the banking industry to throw of regulations that have been in place since the Depression. Sex is a wonderful thing." Joan Osborne -- If you are married to Hillary Clinton, why the hell would you want to mess around with Monica Lewinsky, anyway? Why go out for a cheeseburger when you can have filet mignon at home?" Robert Redford -- "I made the Watergate film All the President's Men as a monument to a form of journalism in which the old-fashioned rules applied: You need two sources before you print anything. This type of journalism no longer exists." Ice Cube -- "This is the longest blow job in the history of America." Marilyn Manson -- "I think he's done a good job for the country, and I think there's no reason why he shouldn't be getting laid just like a rock star would....I don't think he deserves to be impeached; but if he does get impeached, he always has a job with me. It has been rumored that Ms. Luck once belonged to this list and, yes, even posted upon occasion. Unfortunately, Joyce was stricken (several years ago) with an affliction which caused her to pass out every time she imagined tool belt-wearing listers in=20 moderatrix gear. Upon diagnosis of this all-too-common, yet=20 ignored, condition, Luck fled to lands unknown and joined a cult calling itself "B.A.B" (they are located in the SF-Bay area and those of you unsuspecting listers who are located in that area are hereby = advised to protect yourselves at all costs). We can only assume that she has since come down with the John Juan Demoaner virus, which enables her to only post once every two or three months when her busy schedule allows for such frivolity. So, in answer to your question, only the Shadow knows (or Deep Throat...whomever may first cross your path). jen--who is not, as many of you may suspect, under the influence of cheap recreational drugs. :) ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 11:59:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Rhondda Ashby Subject: Re: *etheridge* Joplin movie SHARON.A.ROUW@monsanto.com wrote: > A few weeks ago I heard about a movie about Frank Sinatra and > the Rat Pack. But we MLE fans know our lady better than that. actually, i don't know her at all. i'm certainly *not* privy to any private, salacious information about her relationship with JC nor do i expect or want to be. i would imagine that the vast majority of the people on this list don't have access to this information either with *very* few exceptions. this is *not* to imply that i believe that MLE is cheating on JC or has cheated on her in the past - *nothing* could be further from the truth. it's just that my status as a fan doesn't mean that i *know* any particulars about MLE's and JC's relationship. i believe MLE when she said that JC is the only GF whom she hasn't cheated on, but do i have any independent knowledge of this? nope. my knowledge is based on trusting that MLE's been truthful in relaying this tidbit about their relationship, which i believe she has. if anybody posted on this list claiming that they'd had an affair with MLE while she was with JC, i certainly wouldn't believe it. however, to assume that anyone knows absolutely what goes on in MLE's personal life, merely because we're fans, i think that's stretching it too far, IMO. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? In a message dated 98-10-23 09:28:37 EDT, mezabarronm@grayson.edu asks: > What is it with the aol imposter?, this was > the first I heard of that. Oh, it was just somebody online last year pretending to be Melissa under several different screen names (some were TIME605, Fretrattle, CARocker, NMRocker, SntaFeNM, and Melisssaa). Once she had people convinced she was the real Melissa, then she would also appear online under her real screen name at the same time the supposed Melissa was online (apparently she had two AOL accounts either on the same computer or used her laptop along with her computer). She would be chatting with someone online, for example, and say, "Wait. Let me call Melissa and get her to sign on and chat with us." And sure enough, a few minutes later, the fake Melissa would sign on. This woman ended up creating this elaborate hoax that she and Melissa were having an affair. It was really rather awful, and sad. And she was able to pull it off, quite believably, for a while because she happened to have some business connections to some people close to Melissa, and so she'd use "inside information" in order to be persuasive and put on a believable act. That's the short version of a long story. Suffice it to say she disappeared once the truth got out. :-) By the way, Rhondda, thanks for posting that url to the HRC photo of Melissa and Julie. I downloaded the picture (it took about 5 mins) but it was worth the wait! Julie is one happy looking pregnant lady! In fact, only one of eight dared to pick up the phone and call -- not because of the $10, but because of the fear! You are *not* alone! :) Don't universities weigh the TOEFL against the SAT when considering you for admission? They did back when I was in high school (I'm a US citizen but grew up outside the US, including my high school years). For a *lot* of my classmates at the time who were applying to American universities, English was not their first language and so they had to take the TOEFL as well....and they all got accepted. Besides, there were *native* English-speakers in my class who were very bright with great academic records who got only modest scores on the SAT....and it had far more to do with the skills of taking *standardized tests* than with their actual verbal and math skills, I assure you! Not only was it a long tedious friday but there were all the usual worries about what to feed the hoardes of weekend visitors (Ok, my housemates cousin and sister!) and then we got home to find the cat had fell off the sideboard taking the fish tank with her. So, I paddled across the carpet, laid Del and Rodney the fish to rest in the bin and began to clear up. Unfortunatley the vacuum wasn't coping too well with sucking grit off a soggy carpet and started to fizzle and foam. So I pulled the plug to escape electrocution and left it to it's own devices in the cupboard. Then I turned the TV on......and to my amazment Melissa was on Pop up video!!!! To those of you in the States this won't be so exciting, but if you're in UK then you'll understand that this NEVER happens! And why did the show go off the air with so little publicity? This exciting and informative documentary answers these questions by tracing the struggle that led up to the coming out episode and by covering what happened when Ellen fought to include gay content on almost every show the following season. Tackling the charge that the show became "too gay," this video features exclusive interviews with Ellen DeGeneres, her partner Anne Heche, writers of the show, and ABC/Disney executives. The Real Ellen Story takes us behind the scenes to discover how the publicity affected Ellen, and the many other people involved in producing the show. University of Washington professor Kate Cummings, who teaches classes in gay and lesbian studies, media studies, and contemporary U.S. political culture, will moderate the panel. In our city, a man was recently arrested for disorderly conduct (aka "disturbing the peace") involving verbal harassment of his two neighbors, whom he believes to be homosexual. There was no physical violence, fortunately, just a drunken redneck spewing vile, hate-filled words and profanity towards the couple. Fortunately, other neighbors were also around and were apalled enough to make statements for the police. The problem is this: the couple, who may be homosexual but who don't want that to be common knowledge, would rather not have a trial and the intrusion into their personal lives that would entail. The prosecutor, keenly aware of the Matthew Shephard murder, wants to make sure the charge is not treated lightly, and that the redneck is punished. So what should the couple do? If they are homosexual, and don't want to be outed in this public manner, should they allow their harasser to get off with a light sentence? And what should the prosecutor do? If the couple prefers to not testify, should he override their wishes for the greater common good of striking a blow against hatred and ignorance? (In this state, the prosecution can proceed even without the consent of the victim). Since the folks on this list seem to be a thoughtful and intelligent lot, I thought you might have some worthwhile thoughts on the issue. I look forward to hearing from you. If we want the Hate Crimes to end - and have the criminals prosecuted - then we hav to take a stand for our rights. If we don't - then we will always have to live in fear. There are ways around testifying in courts - I think we have taken these crimes long enough and we should start standing up to the ones who are ignorant!!!! That's my story. I know it's been a while since I wrote to you guys. I don't know if you all are interested in some Dutch Melissa "stuff". In Holland on our Dutch radio there is a programm that is very popular by the listeners. It's called "Arbeidsvitaminen" rough translation for it is"Labor/Working vitamines". Companies can give them their list of favorite songs of all time and they will be on the air for 3 hours. This week they had the top 100 of the 100 most requested songs of all the past years. The people who listen and send in are, I think, between 25 and 50 years old. The average isn't a (huge) Melissa fan or whatever, but they LOVE to hear Like The Way I Do for some reason. Melissa is placed on number 4!! (Higher than the Eagles Hotel California, Queens Bohemian Rhapsody..... ;-).Number one was Meat Loaf with "Paradise by the dashboard light". I wrote this to you, so you can find out, Melissa is still popular overhere. Not even by the average FAN, but too a lot of people who love LTWID. That's all I want to let you know. Happy Halloween! ;) Patti - ------------ http://www.bergen.com:80/previews/clubs30199810301.htm Keeping a watchful eye on Big Brother Friday, October 30, 1998 By RYAN JONES Staff Writer At first thought, it's a little like the Jimi Hendrix Experience without Jimi Hendrix, the Miracles sans Smokey Robinson, or the Pips minus Gladys Knight. If you're Big Brother and the Holding Company, what's the use in going on without Janis Joplin? Janis has been gone for 28 years now, and most folks probably thought the band that made its name as her backing group has been similarly inactive ever since. Not at all. Though they've existed under the mainstream radar for most of their careers, the surviving members of Big Brother haven't stopped making music. Now, they're back with their first album of original music in over 25 years, and they've even found another young female vocalist to make their sound work. Fronted by California-bred singer Lisa Battle, the revamped BBHC plays Mexicali Blues Cafe, 655 Cedar Lane, Teaneck, tonight. The band's new record, "Do What You Love," is available at the show and should be hitting stores soon. The little-known truth behind the BBHC is that they were a band long before Joplin found them. Together they enjoyed their greatest success in 1968, roaring out of the psychedelic San Francisco scene with the classic "Piece of My Heart." Joplin left the band at the end of the year, effectively ending BBHC's 15 minutes of fame. In the time since, the band has survived breakups, shifting lineups, and minimal commercial notice. The current BBHC roster features founding members Sam Andrew on guitar, Dave Getz on drums, and Peter Albin on bass, with Battle and guitarist Tom Finch the most recent additions. In Battle, the band has a powerful vocalist with a distinctive style that, refreshingly, sounds nothing like Joplin.
