Patti - ----------------- http://nt.excite.com/news/r/990405/16/news-crime-gays Accused Pleads Guilty In Wyoming Gay Murder Case (Last updated 4:19 PM ET April 5) By Judith Crosson LARAMIE, Wyo. (Reuters) - One of two young men accused of the brutal murder of gay Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard pleaded guilty Monday, admitting his role in an attack that threw the spotlight on hate crimes and anti-gay violence. Russell Henderson, 21, took the guilty plea in exchange for a sentence of life in prison. Prosecutor Cal Rerucha had sought the death penalty for last October's attack. Henderson and his friend, Aaron McKinney, also 21, have been accused of murder, kidnapping and robbery in the slaying of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming. Prosecutors say the two men lured Shepard from a Laramie bar last October, pistol-whipped him and lashed him to a fence on a country road in sub-freezing temperatures. Shepard died five days later in a hospital. Opening statements in Henderson's trial had been set to begin Tuesday, but speculation grew that he would agree to a plea bargain after the court said there would be a pre-trial hearing Monday. McKinney, who is due to go on trial in August, has already admitted that the two beat Shepard, but has said that he dealt the three final blows. Henderson's guilty plea could set the stage for him to testify at his friend's trial, although it was not clear Monday if that would happen. Shepard's murder brought an unwelcome glare of media attention on the small college town of Laramie, whose 26,000 residents expressed shock over the brutality of the crime. Gay activists have said the attack showed the need for anti-hate crime legislation. It spurred vigils and rallies and turned the desolate, windswept hill where the attack occurred into a pilgrimage site. During jury selection for Henderson's trial, his attorney Wyatt Skaggs said his client was present at the assault but did not take part. Prosecutors have said Shepard, a boyish freshman who weighed just 105 pounds, spent 18 agonizing hours tied to the fence before being found by a passerby. McKinney's girlfriend, Kristen Price, 19, told police that McKinney became enraged after Shepard flirted with him in the bar, which embarrassed him and sparked the attack. But McKinney denied that Shepard made any advances to the two defendants. Price and Henderson's girlfriend, Chasity Pasley, 20, were charged as accessories after the fact for allegedly destroying bloody clothes and providing the two men with false alibis. Pasley pleaded guilty and will be sentenced later this year. Price's trial is set for May. The prosecutor appeared determined not to let Shepard's homosexuality become an issue in the trial. But it was definitely an issue outside the Albany County courthouse Monday as about a dozen anti-gay protesters faced off with a group calling themselves "Angels of Peace" who came dressed in angelic costumes complete with wings. The anti-gay group led by controversial Kansas preacher Fred Phelps has picketed a number of gay events, and demonstrated outside the church at Shepard's funeral in Casper, Wyoming. ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, use the form at: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/etheridge.html Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Apr 1999 19:22:12 -0500 From: "Fink, Patti" Subject: *etheridge* NMEC: Court exchanges today in Shepard case Several exchanges in today's court events during Russell Henderson's guilty plea for kidnapping and killing Matthew Shepard, including statements by Henderson, Matthew's mother, and Judge Donnell during sentencing after Henderson's allocution... - -------------- http://www.canoe.ca/TopStories/shepard_apr5.html [snip] Henderson said he drove the truck and helped tie Shepard to the fence, but blamed McKinney for the beating. Henderson then apologized to Shepard's parents, Judy and Dennis: "I'm very sorry for what I did and I'm ready to pay my debt for what I did." Judge Jeffrey A. Donnell dismissed his apology. "This court does not believe you feel any remorse," Donnell said when he sentenced him. "The pain you have caused here, Mr. Henderson, will never go away. Never." "Mr. and Mrs. Shepard, there is not a moment that goes by that I don't see what happened that night. I'm very sorry, I'm ready to pay my debt for what I've done," he said. The announcement came from Gold Circle President, Michael Delich, who also announced that Academy Award- winning editor, Richard Harris ("Titanic"), has been signed as Consulting Editor to complete the editing of the film, which will be introduced to the international marketplace at MipDoc/MipTV in April. "We are pleased to collaborate with John Cossette and Wave Entertainment to complete and launch this important film," says Delich. "The music industry has a long history of social activism. 'Stand and Be Counted' explores that history, and also offers a perspective on the new generation of artists who are carrying the activist torch forward. In addition, having a renowned editor like Richard Harris on board will help to ensure that the final product is top quality. I know it will be something we'll all be proud of." The film is a companion to the HarperCollins book written by David Crosby and David Bender. It was adapted for television by noted television/film writer and biographer, Carl Gottlieb ("Jaws," "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour"). It is comprised of three, hour-long segments that explore the history of social activism by musical artists, from early pioneers like Woody Guthrie to contemporary activists like Jewel. The film features live musical performances from some of the most important benefit concerts of the last 30 years intercut with revealing interviews in which such artists as Elton John, Don Henley, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Young, Sting, Phil Collins, Harry Belafonte and many others join Crosby in intimate, one- on-one discussions about their choices to become activists and using the power of their music to effect change. "I'm excited to see this project nearing completion," adds Crosby. "The response I got when I first started asking my friends about what made them become activists was amazing. Their passion and their willingness to take risks for something they believed in came out very strong in the interviews, and I know it will come across in the documentary, as well." Gold Circle's founder, Norm Waitt, Jr., serves as executive producer of the project, while Dan Davis, Vice President in charge of Gold Circle's West Coast Operations, is the Executive in charge of production. The producing team is filled out by Cossette, who is President of Cossette Productions and a partner in Wave Entertainment, and Gary McGroarty, Wave's EVP and Creative Director. The film is being co-directed by Jeff Scheftel, who has won multiple Emmy, Peabody and CableAce awards for his work on such programs as A&E's Biography series, "Modern Marvels" and "Survivors of the Holocaust." Editing is being done by Tim Tobin ("Jacques Cousteau's Mississippi," "Bring on the Night") and Conrad Stanley (The GRAMMYS). "This film presents some of the best -- and most significant -- musical performances in recent years, along with an important back story about the forces driving that music delivered by the artists," says Cossette. "That is a powerful combination that has the power to transform. Through 'Stand and Be Counted,' we all learn about how the music community has evolved to become the inspirational leader in social activism." - - snip - _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? At a press conference in New York, Universal Music Group, a unit of Seagram Co. Ltd. (Toronto:VO.TO - news), and BMG Entertainment, a unit of Bertelsmann (quote from Yahoo! In a statement released ahead of the news conference, Universal, the No. 1 record label in terms of revenues, and BMG, a leader in music fan clubs as well as record distribution, detailed plans to cash in on their unparalleled access to some of the world's most popular recording artists. The plan involves creating fan clubs centered around music artists ranging from teen idols the Backstreet Boys to pop singer Elton John to rapper Puff Daddy and country star Trisha Yearwood. Visitors to the fan Web sites will be a few computer clicks away from ordering recordings of their favorite artists for delivery by mail from getmusic.com, which offers shoppers more than 250,000 titles, including those from rival record labels. As such, the getmusic.com online store represents a formidable new rival to Internet music retailers like CDnow (Nasdaq:CDNW - news) and Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN - news), the world's biggest online store, which offers music, books, videos and other goods. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? The Recording Industry Association of America, an industry trade group, released figures showing the number of counterfeit compact discs made illegally in U.S. facilities rose to about 338,500, up 163 percent from 129,000 in 1997. The number of pirated CD recordables in the United States, or recordings illegally made on blank discs through Internet downloads and other means, rose 103,971, from a scant 442 in 1997. The figures reflect products that were confiscated on street corners, in flea markets, retail outlets and via Internet sales, the RIAA said. Pirating CDs severely hampers the $13.7 billion U.S. record industry's ability to control distribution and retail royalties. "Domestically we lose $1 million a day to piracy in the U.S.," RIAA spokeswoman Lydia Pelliccia told Reuters. Worldwide, where music is about a $40 billion business, the illegal copying of digital CDs has sparked a storm of controversy particularly in Asian-Pacific countries such as China, which have fewer restrictions on copying equipment. Indeed, the RIAA said the rising number of illegal copies is mainly being fueled by the recent availability of inexpensive CD recordable devices and blank disks. To defend the industry, the RIAA has taken a series of actions such as an educational campaign to combat Internet piracy on college campuses, providing CD manufacturers with tools to spot suspicious orders from illegal distributors, and helping to pass a bill in California directed at piracy. The California Optical Disc Identifier bill, which cleared the California legislature in September, is intended to reduce piracy by requiring makers of CDs, CD recordables, DVDs and other optical discs to label their products with a manufacturer's name and state. "Between the many CD plants around the country adopting better business practices and the scores of universities signing up for our copyright education program -- we're making strides on all fronts," said Frank Creighton, RIAA's anti-piracy director. In a separate action announced Wednesday, the State Council of the Chinese government -- the highest executive authority in China -- directed all its ministries, commissions and government agencies to use only legitimate computer software in authorized ways. "This is a milestone in China's efforts to increase intellectual property protection," U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky said in a statement. The action "sets an important example for the Chinese private sector and for other national governments." Paraguay, Thailand, Turkey, Philippines, Korea and Jordan have issued similar decrees in recent months, and last October, President Clinton issued an order directing all U.S. government agencies to ensure that only legitimate software is used. - ----------------- ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, use the form at: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/etheridge.html Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ End of etheridge-digest V3 #45 ****************************** From: etheridge-digest To: etheridge-digest@esosoft.com Subject: etheridge-digest V3 #46 Date: April 10, 1999 3:02 AM etheridge-digest Saturday, April 10 1999 Volume 03 : Number 046 *etheridge* (SMLEC) Wall of Sound: Replaced Smashing Pumpkins Drummer Speaks [Rhondda Ashby ] *etheridge* 04/09/99 MEIN mail update [Rhondda Ashby Subject: *etheridge* (SMLEC) Wall of Sound: Replaced Smashing Pumpkins Drummer Speaks check out the 2nd to last paragraph in this article...woo hoo! :-D *rhondda* http://wallofsound.go.com/news/stories/aronoff040899.html April 8, 1999 Replaced Smashing Pumpkins Drummer Speaks The Smashing Pumpkins are hitting the road again to celebrate the return of drummer Jimmy Chamberlain - fired in July 1996 for his continued drug use and for his role in the overdose death of tour keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin that year - and to serve notice to fans that the group is back to its rocking, guitar-heavy ways after a brief excursion into more ambient territory on last year's Adore. "The Arising!" kicks off on April 10 at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit, Mich., and the good news for fans not in the area is that the show's first four songs will be cybercast through the band's official website, www.thesmashingpumpkins.com. Since Chamberlain's dismissal, the group has worked with a few awfully good drummers - including Filter's Matt Walker, Beck's Joey Waronker, and Kenny Aronoff, who's played with seemingly everybody in rock and earned strong reviews for his contributions during the Adore tour. Hard feelings? Aronoff says not at all. "To bring Jimmy back in, hell, that's family," says Aronoff, who spent many years in John Mellencamp's band and whose latest sessions were for Garth Brooks, Melissa Etheridge, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Eddie Money, among others. "You can't replace a founding member of a band; you can physically replace them, but it's not the same." Aronoff - who continues a friendly relationship with the Pumpkins - says he got an inkling Chamberlain might be back in the Pumpkins' patch last November, when he and Corgan were working on a track for Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi's upcoming solo album. Aronoff was introduced to Chamberlain in the bar of a Los Angeles hotel; the two hit it off, and when Aronoff told Corgan about the meeting, the Pumpkins' leader revealed he had recently had lunch with Chamberlain. "I said, 'What was it like?'" Aronoff remembers. "He said 'It was like putting on an old glove.' That's when I knew. And, you know, Jimmy's a great drummer. I really respect him a lot. There's some magazines that want to turn it into this weird competition thing, but there's no competition at all. I came in and did my thing with the Pumpkins, and it was great. This is the course events have taken, and that's fine. It really is." Aronoff will be playing some promotional dates with Melissa Etheridge during the summer, but he's most looking forward to April 27; he's subbing for drummer Anton Fig in the Late Night With David Letterman band that evening, when the musical guest is John Mellencamp - the first encounter between the two since Aronoff left Mellencamp's band in 1996. "I'm totally cool with it," Aronoff says, "but there's that little bit of a giggle, like 'Oh my God, here we go again...' I haven't spoken to him or seen him since I left. (Rob Kenner in _VIBE_, February, 1995) Did you know? Since the early 1970s, the word "herstory" has been criticized by academics who consider it an unnecessary term founded in a misunderstanding of the etymology of "history" (which has been taken to be "his-story," but which actually comes from the Greek "histor," meaning "learned" or "knowing"). An article in _English Journal_ sums up the ideology behind "herstory": "Her-story, in structure and usage, effectively unmasks and counters his-story, a male-centered narrative in which women have traditionally played little part. Herstory is not just a feminist version of history: it is a different narrative altogether, told in a new voice. It proclaims women's power to coin their own words and, in doing so, to (literally) change history." Like it or not, the word seems to be here to stay. - ---------------- Brought to you by Merriam-Webster Inc. http://www.m-w.com - ---------------- ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, use the form at: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/etheridge.html Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 09:01:29 -0500 From: "Jenniffer Smith" Subject: *etheridge* NMEC Guidelines and Boots Hi, all-- Just a quick reminder that both the list posting guidelines and the bootleg list may be found at: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Show/2122 If anyone has any additions/corrections to the bootleg list, please let me know (**someone emailed me a few weeks ago with some new info and said they'd send it along...if you've sent it, I never received it, so you may want to try again). I thought I would tell you a little more about myself. I am 32 years old and I live in Massachusetts. I am attending Salem State College for my Bachelors Degree in Business. I have all of her CD's [the studio ones] and I have not seen Melissa in concert yet, but I hope to when she starts touring again. Well enough about me. Now I thought I would pose a fantasy type question. If you could pick any venue for Melissa to perform in what and where would it be and what would the song list be? Pick any songs you want[ covers she has done or even songs that she hasn't but you would like her to do] and put them in any order you want. I would pick Great Woods[ now known as the Tweeter Center] and my song list would be "Your Little Secret", Bring Me Some Water", "I Really Like You", "You Can Sleep While I Drive", "Nowhere To Go", "The Angels", "Shriner's Park", "Meet Me In The Back", "Brave and Crazy", "Come To My Window", "Silent Legacy", "I'm The Only One", "Chrome Plated Heart", "Occasionally", "All The Way To Heaven", "Yes I Am", "I Take You With Me", "Don't You Need", "Must Be Crazy For Me", "Piece of My Heart", and as an encore, "Keep It Precious". :D Hope you like my questions. Talk to you later. Peace to all and KIP. "Access Hollywood" is also a syndicated show, so see above . in the SF Bay Area, it's shown on our CBS affiliate, KPIX, at 1:35 am (which means that today's show actually comes on very early tomorrow morning). today's E!'s "News Daily" will be on the following times: 7:00 pm (in less than 15 minutes if you're on the west coast) 6:00 am (repeated tomorrow, Tuesday) 12:00 pm (noon, also repeated tomorrow, Tuesday; i neglected to mention this one originally) the only show that i know *will* be showing highlights of the GLAAD awards is E!'s "News Daily," although i would be surprised if ET and AH didn't. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? If you believe in evolution, it still seems more likely, biologically and evolutionarily speaking, that dirt came before creatures. So once again, dirt must be older than sin. Hmm....following Joyce's Talmudic tack, air was created before dirt, nixing all credence to Autumn's rumor that: >air is four days younger than dirt and sin is 12 yrs older than dirt. By the Creationism standard, it's air, dirt, sin. Air a day older than dirt, dirt at least four days older than sin. At a gala in Los Angeles attended by 1,800 people on April 17, GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, distributed another batch of its 10th annual Media Award winners. (Some awards were given in New York City on March 28; the rest will be passed out in Washington, DC on May 8.) The awards were created to honor individuals and projects in the media and entertainment industries for their fair and accurate representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. Two special awards were presented, plus a videotribute to sitcom-star- cum-talkshow-host Roseanne. GLAAD's Vanguard Award for "a member of the entertainment or media community who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for lesbians and gay men" was presented to Whoopi Goldberg by Sharon Stone (a committed AIDS activist who played a controversial bisexual role in "Basic Instinct"). GLAAD executive director Joan Garry had noted previously that, "Whoopi has taken numerous lesbian roles since the beginning of her amazing career, educating millions about an often invisible part of our community -- African-American women. Whoopi has tackled roles Hollywood is only now starting to embrace." Actually, Goldberg's portrayal of lesbians predates her movie career to her character-driven stand-up comedy. Although Stephen Spielberg downplayed it considerably in the film, Whoopi's Oscar-nominated role in "The Color Purple" is significantly lesbian in the Alice Walker novel; and her Oscar-winning role in "Ghost" included kissing a woman (even though of course it was supposed to be the male ghost borrowing her body who did it). Her more overtly lesbian roles include "Boys on the Side" and the current "Deep End of the Ocean," and she also made a brief but powerful appearance in Christopher Reeve's AIDS telepic "In the Gloaming." Whoopi participated in the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, as well as being a long-time, hard-working activist for AIDS and other charities. Singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge and her partner, filmmaker Julie Cypher, received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award from the hands of Tom Hanks (who of course won the first of his two Best Actor Oscars for portraying a partnered gay man with AIDS in "Philadelphia"), for "openly lesbian or gay individuals in the media for outstanding contribution in combating homophobia." Etheridge and Cypher were the highest-profile same-gender couple in entertainment for years before "Ellen&Anne" became a household word, and since 1996 they've been the community's highest-profile parents (now of two children). The name of the award honors the activism of the late casting director, whose industry achievements included the original casting of "Cheers." Among the myriad other stars in attendance were open gays and lesbians Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche, Bill Brochtrup (who plays a now-regular gay character on "NYPD Blue"), k.d. lang, and Bruce Vilanch (writer and regular on "Hollywood Squares"); a few of the non-gay notables included Debbie Allen, David Crosby, Judith Light, Lucy Liu ("Ally McBeal"), Garry Marshall, Kathy Najimy ("Veronica's Closet"), David Hyde Pierce ("Frasier"), and Doris Roberts ("Everybody Loves Raymond"). Entertainment was provided by GLAAD Outstanding Music Album winner (for the GLAMA Best Debut choice "Rufus Wainwright") open gay Rufus Wainwright; by open lesbian Erin Hamilton, daughter of comic/actress Carol Burnett and recently a hit at the Palm Springs White Party with her single "The Flame"; and by The Murmurs. "Gods and Monsters," to the surprise of no one, was named Outstanding Film - Wide Release, with supporting actress Lynn Redgrave present at the ceremony. Director Bill Condon won a scriptwriting Oscar for his film realization of openly gay novelist Christopher Bram's "Father of Frankenstein," which presented an imagining of the last days of real- life gay director James Whale, winning numerous honors for openly gay star Ian McKellen and a few for Redgrave as well (including Oscar nominations for both). Yet "Gods" had some serious competition from the British biopic "Wilde," as well as the sassy "The Opposite of Sex" and "The Object of My Affection." (Lisa Cholodenko's "High Art" received the Limited Release film award at the New York GLAAD ceremony.) Also surprising no one, the Outstanding TV Comedy Series went to NBC's rookie hit "Will & Grace," the only show on TV with an openly gay male title character (not to mention his flamboyant sidekick). All four of the show's regulars were present: Eric McCormick, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally, and Sean B. Hayes. The competition included another NBC offering, "Suddenly Susan" (two recurring male characters married each other last season), and three ABC offerings: "The Drew Carey Show" (that cross-dressing heterosexual brother), "Spin City" (with its outstanding regular African-American gay character; regular Richard Kind was in attendance) and "Ellen" (yep, the final days of the pioneering series still qualified for consideration). Outstanding Television - Individual Episode (for shows without a regular gay or lesbian character) went to HBO's "Tracey Takes On ... Religion," with star Tracey Ullman present to receive the award. Ullman has long portrayed both lesbian and gay male characters in her work (and the teenaged daughter of one of the first committed couple of gay dads on primetime US broadcast TV back on FOX's "The Tracey Ullman Show"), but in this particular episode Ullman spoofed the abduction of a lesbian to a center trying to turn her straight. Airing in the year of the religious right's so-called "Truth in Love" ad campaign, it was an irresistible choice. The other nominees in the category were NBC's "E.R." edition "Stuck on You," the Sci-Fi Channel's "Welcome to Paradox" edition "Options" and the daring "Eric's Buddy" episode of teenaged confusion on FOX's "That '70's Show," whose star Topher Grace was present at the event. CBS' "Chicago Hope" was selected Outstanding TV Drama Series over NBC's "Homicide" (where one previously heterosexual character has been checking out gay life) and SHOWTIME's "Linc's" (where Linc's daughter in the military has questioned her orientation). "Chicago Hope" star Adam Arkin, whose character was able to develop an untroubled friendship with a younger gay physician who found him attractive, was present. The critically-acclaimed "The Last Session" was selected Outstanding L.A. Theater Production over "Burning Blue," "A Gay Christmas Carol," "Heaven and Home," and "Thorn." _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? But there was another twist to the list at the 10th annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation media awards in L.A. (one of three held around the country): Saturday's bash was the largest GLAAD turnout here yet, with 1,700 supporters celebrating at the Century Plaza Hotel, among them such mainstream media powerhouses as Sharon Stone, Tom Hanks and honoree Whoopi Goldberg. Press from about 110 outlets recorded the event, which raised $800,000. The sheer mass and might of the benefit illustrated how far things have come since GLAAD began recognizing heroes of film, TV and publishing for putting a human face on gay people in the images they project. "It's had a tremendous effect because it's so aboveboard, it's so mainstream," said activist, comedy writer and "Hollywood Square" Bruce Vilanch. "The biggest names in the business come and pay obeisance to the idea of fair portrayals in the media. The press coverage is staggering now. People can't help but notice." And there's safety in numbers. Assemblywoman Sheila James Kuehl (D- Santa Monica) said she was thrilled by the turnout. "It's a lot safer for gay and lesbian people in the industry to show up at an event because it's so much more acceptable to be here." GLAAD honored Goldberg, who's played several lesbian roles in film, and new moms Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher, citing the couple as exemplars of "family values." "Gods and Monsters" was hailed as an outstanding film in wide release; "Rufus Wainwright" was deemed the outstanding music album; and "The Last Session" was named the outstanding L.A. theater production. The TV winners were "Will & Grace," for comedy series; "Chicago Hope," for drama series; and "Tracey Takes On Religion," for individual episode. What's it all for? So that young gay people, like the 24-year-old Wainwright, can afford to be charmingly clueless about GLAAD's mission. "I want to thank GLAAD for doing so much of the work I wasn't aware they did," he said, accepting his award. "I thank you for paving the way for me. I will not do wrong. I'll be the greatest gay person ever." - - snip - Irene Lacher's Out & About column runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on Page 2. She can be reached by e-mail at socalliving@latimes.com. However, this past Saturday at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, the stars and excitement were anything but small for the second installment of the 10th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Guests included Debbie Allen, Tracey Ullman, David Crosby, Richard Kind from Spin City, k.d. lang, Judith Light, Garry Marshall, David Hyde Pierce from Frasier, Kerr Smith from Dawson's Creek, Bruce Vilanch and Rita Wilson. The Murmurs, Erin Hamilton and Rufus Wainwright each performed to the sell-out crowd of 1,700. Wainwright, a 1999 Media Award winner, promised the crowd he'd be the "greatest gay person ever." The entire cast of NBC's hit Will & Grace where thrilled by their show's win for Outstanding Comedy Series. Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally, who kissed passionately to get a laugh on stage during the acceptance speech, told the audience they were just "glad." Star Eric McCormick (photo with GLAAD's Scott Seomin and Joan Garry) thanked "the person who really blazed the trail and made the world safe for all gay leads, Ms. Ellen DeGeneres (photo with Will & Grace gang)." Ellen, who was in the audience, was clearly moved when the crowd gave her a standing ovation. And backstage, Ellen was almost moved to tears when director James Burrow told the media that Will & Grace would not be on the air if it had not been for her work. DeGeneres posed for photos with the whole creative team and cast of the show. Talk show diva Roseanne (photo), who received a video tribute from GLAAD, told the crowd she gives lesbians a lot of the credit for her success because "I find them to be the most unique as well as frightening individuals alive. After myself, of course." She then detailed various sex acts and used numerous expletives, while the not easily shocked crowd roared with laughter. Veronica's Closet star Kathy Najimy "outed" Ellen DeGeneres as a straight woman, noting that "it's time for someone to smash the charade" of DeGeneres' relationship with the gorgeous Anne Heche. Najimy then produced a poster-sized wedding photo of DeGeneres in the arms of her "husband." Said Najimy: "Explain this, Mrs. Ellen McDougal!" This was by far the loudest laugh of the night. She then outed Melissa Etheridge as "a big straight slut while poor unsuspecting Julie (Cypher) sits home with your what sixteenth child, rubbing vitamin E on her stretch marks." Cypher took issue with the stretch marks from the stage after the couple accepted their Stephen F. Kolzak Award from friend Tom Hanks. Lynn Redgrave, who accepted the Outstanding Film Award for Gods and Monsters, was poignant as she spoke of her father, Sir Michael Redgrave. "I am the daughter of a gay man. And in learning that he was a gay man only after I was an adult, and knowing that he lived in an era when he couldn't talk about it -- it made me love him and know him more -- because he had to keep a secret he shouldn't have had to have kept," she said. "So I'm proud to be here as his daughter and with all of you." The final award of the evening had a sexy Sharon Stone, in a Zebra- striped Vera Wang dress, presenting Whoopi Goldberg with her Vanguard Award. The two almost kissed for the press backstage, until Sharon, according to Whoopi, "saw what was in my mouth!" _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I think my fellow MLElisters >may have a few comments for that. Of course we do! ;) Quite frankly, I can understand why MLE was not included as an essential, must-have artist of the 90's. Of the three CDs she released, I would count YIA as the best of the lot. While I like YIA, I don't feel that it's worthy of being considered any better than other female rock artists of the 90s. In fact, I think that the IGs had a better decade than MLE. If I had to pick either YIA or Swamp Ophelia to take to a deserted island (and no, this isn't an offer to start a "deserted island" thread ), I'd most likely pick Swamp Ophelia. The writing is better, the production isn't as over-done, and I think it's just a better CD musically than YIA. I like YIA a lot. Of MLEs commercial releases, I rank it 2nd behind B&C as my favorite. But I just don't think it deserves "essential" status. I have no idea if RS made a similar list for the 80s (I'll bet "someone" in the Bay Area might know, though! ), but if they did, I would definately consider B&C an essential for the female rocker genre for that decade. For some reason, though, I have a very good feeling about her next release. Maybe it's just a touch of excitement to hear new material and see how she's evolved since YLS. I just have a feeling, though, that the next CD will be better than anything else she did in the 90s. jen--who is wearing "grape" nail polish today... ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, use the form at: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/etheridge.html Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 09:42:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Rhondda Ashby Subject: *etheridge* 04/22/99 MEIN update: MLE participating in panel discussion on tolerance MEIN has updated their news page with a newsflash. according to MEIN, MLE will be participating in a live panel discussion of "The Future is Me." the panel discussion, which "will focus on issues facing young women in the modern world," is taking place *today* at 10 am PT (about 15 minutes from now!). the event is sponsored by the Museum of Tolerance. btw, MEIN indicated that to find out further information about this to check out http://www.wiesenthal.com/swcn/daughters.html and http://webevents.broadcast.com/swc/daughters/. however, i received error messages when i tried to access both of these links. i'll keep checking and will post when i have better information. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I am lucky enough to have access to realaudio and the internet at work so I got the full live broadcast. Melissa's hair is growing out slightly, actually she looked pretty darn good. And Melissa could not talk without her hands going. She did some of the traditional struggling for words, her hands going, and I could see her trying very hard to adequately put her thoughts into words. A topic we have discussed before on this list which I will NOT launch into again :o) As to content. Wouldn't you know it, some gentlemen stopped by for real work just as Melissa was giving her little introductory speech. Dang! Had half an ear on her so kept getting lost on the discussion about work. One thing I remember when Melissa was responding to an audience question. She talked of when she was going through the process of adopting her children. In order to adopt, social services (or some such institution) had to visit her home and do an "assessment" of her, her home, etc. Because of California law, even though the folks thought she was a highly qualified "parent" they had to deny her the adoption. They were allowed to enter some caveat about how the denial was reluctantly offered as the person was fully acceptable but the law forbade them allowing the assessment to agree to the adoption. Then a judge was allowed to overturn the assessment so Melissa could go through with the adoption. Thankfully all ended up well, but to have to put people, loving parents, through such a process speaks volumes about our society. Anyway, the moderator also made a point of asking Melissa if she had any female role models from rock 'n roll as she was known for listing Bruce as a model. The moderator brought up Janis Joplin...interesting response from Melissa. Although she likes Janis' music, her lifestyle was something of a mess. Janis was not a role model for Melissa. I hope others can provide more meat to this but I, again, must thank Rhondda for the heads up. It was well worth the 90 minutes as the panel members were all well-spoken women. You see I work for that "social services agency" that does those assessments. I, unfortunately, do not do "those assessments" because my Master's Degree does not qualify under California state law (you must have Masters in Social Work, one in Psychology is not good enough), but I digress. Wednesday at the Dane County Coliseum, Crow stepped back from any remaining vestiges of glamour that might have still been clinging to the edges of her persona. With her hair cut short and dressed simply in jeans and pullover, Crow projected the scruffy indifference to appearances typical of Chrissie Hynde, or her regional neighbor Melissa Etheridge. With their shared love of heartland rock, Etheridge is the '90s star who probably has the most in common with Crow. Crow doesn't have Melissa's raw power, but as she demonstrated again Wednesday, she has a better command of melody, hook and pop song craft. She also has the songwriter's invaluable gift for spinning a tale or painting a picture in a few economical lines. Seventeen hundred guests and 110 media organizations attended. Reporter Rex Wockner wandered between the main hall and the Press Room with his tape recorder to capture these snippets: - - snip - MELISSA ETHERIDGE: "Here we are standing in this lovely room in front of some of the most beautiful people on earth, and we don't quite know what to say because this is a strange kind of an award. It's strange to get an award for just living your life every day, you know? It's, like, OK. But we're here and we - Julie and I - just want to say thank you. I was 17 and I was growing up in the great state of Kansas in the fine town of Leavenworth....I was 17 and I kissed a girl for the first time. And the earth moved and the heavens opened up and I looked around and I felt like I was the most alone person on this earth. Because as far as I knew there were no other girls who had ever kissed any other girl ever. And the thought that I would be isolated and rejected for the rest of my life was a very, very real one. Then one day, I was looking through my father's books - he used to teach high-school psychology and I was looking through his books - and there was this little pamphlet on homosexuality and it had this little pencil drawing of two girls holding hands and my heart lept. I was not alone. Someone had drawn a picture of two girls holding hands, so somewhere someone had seen two girls holding hands. I didn't care what the pamphlet said. I didn't care if it said if we were sick or not or whatever; all I cared about was that image, the feeling of hope. And if the power of one small drawing was so great to me, imagine what the work all of us are doing means to young gays everywhere today. I was thinking about what this award ceremony was like then [when I received an award for a video in 1994] and it was a bit more of a grass- roots kind of thing - kind of, 'Hey, rah-rah, c'mon, we can go' - and I remember there was one actually out actor - it was, I'm sorry, I forget his name, but the guy on Frasier [Dan Butler], he was out. It was like, 'Oh, he's really out and he's, like, on a TV show, whoo'...and it was a big deal....Wow, in like five years, it's so exciting to watch Will & Grace and then celebrate that. k.d. [lang] and I pretty much harangued [Ellen DeGeneres] for a long time, saying, 'Girl, c'mon, you gotta do this,' and everything, and we were on her for a long time, not really knowing what we were saying, not really understanding the scope of it and what it would do to her as a person - just catapult her into sort of this activism full-on. I mean, she was our little funny Ellen who used to make us laugh at parties and such. [Now] she's out there blazing trails for us." - - snip - _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I quite like Breakdown as a title. You know, I kind of like "Breakdown", too. In fact, I think for the same reason I like "Never Enough". They are short, powerful, passionate titles. They cut right to the heart of what the album is. In any case, I definitely think it's better than "Beloved". I think title's should reflect the content of the album, I wonder if this means that most songs are gonna be all doom and gloom?? I hope so!! I like those kinda songs ;) Yes, definitely the album's title should reflect the content. Choosing an album title, as well as the order of songs, is very serious business to most artists. And if that's the case here, I'm looking forward to an album that has her digging into her "dark side" again, which she did make a reference to in that Good Morning America interview. > How about Released... At Last? No, guess you can't annoy the = record >company. What about Takes It To Heart? OK, these are terrible, but = someone >out there must have a better idea. How about Parental Discretion? I liked the one Michelle Malone used a while back when she was pissed and feed up with her label.... it was called "For You Not Them". I thought that was a pretty cool title. So let's see, Melissa could call it "Hey, You Jerks Are Upsetting My Fans With This Crap, Hurry Up So I Can Release This Thing". No, I guess that's too long. She likes short titles, so how about "Hurry Up". For anyone who responds, please do so to me privately and not to the whole list (unless you add some token Melissa Etheridge content ). I have a scene that takes place in Dallas in the novel I am working on. It's been over fifteen years since I visited Dallas, so is it true that the revolving restaurant downtown is at the top of the Hyatt? I can't really remember. And, more importantly, is it still there? ;-) Also....not counting that restaurant, if one were in Dallas and really wanted to impress someone, where would they take them to dinner that's grossly expensive yet also romantic? Finally, if one were visiting Dallas for one day and one day only, what are three things in the city they might be likely to do? (Aside from landing in and leaving from Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport.) "Rites of Passage" or "Shaming of the Sun" would more likely get the nod from me, but we're agreed that the 90's has been a better decade for IG than for MLE. Or, another recent comparison: Sheryl Crow. She's seen great commercial success, and kept making great music, IMO, in spite of the backlash of popular opinion. She's released 3 excellent CDs in the 90's. I'd have trouble picking three excellent *songs* of Melissa's in this decade (especially in comparison to the first 2 albums). There are a lot of good, fun songs, but nothing I'd hold up as an example of fine rock songwriting... maybe "Ain't It Heavy" or "I'm the Only One". Still, the consistency isn't there on any of those albums so that I'd consider them essential as I do the first 2. >I have no idea if RS made a similar list for the 80s (I'll bet >"someone" in the Bay Area might know, though! ), but >if they did, I would definately consider B&C an essential for the >female rocker genre for that decade. Definitely... Melissa was a forerunner of the current popularity of "women in rock," but IMO she lost her edge when she dumped Kevin McCormick for Hugh Padgham. Of course, it achieved what it was supposed to -- commercial success. Anyone know what Kevin is up to these days? The title "Breakdown", seems to me like someone who has broken down in the middle of the desert with no help in site and just tipped over the canteen. Perhaps after all she has been through this might be how she feels. On the other hand, it could be like the falling of the Berlin wall and all the stones have fallen in place for this CD. Either way we will have new music. IMHO,I would have called it: A Long Time A Coming !!!!! Which in essence is what happens when you "Breakdown" ! :+) I will be all too glad to finally hear new music and see how she sounds now that she is a parent. Recent photos seem to make her look more mature. Yet somehow I feel she still knows how to play with those eyes. Sultry is the word for that I believe. And a concert this summer would definitely make this bear feel as if the wait in the desert was not so long afterall. Yeah, I hope there's plenty of her dark side lurking around in the new album. I don't know why, but I just like those kinda songs better, they seem to touch me more, they just mean more to me. I mean, my least favourite song of melissa's is "aint it heavy", it has never done anything special for me!! Compare that song to something like "precious pain" or "don't you need" or "ruins" for example, all of these songs are among my MLE favourites, that's just the way it is. So I'm hoping there are similar 'negative' songs on the new album. =20 As just about everyone's said, Breakdown is a much better title than Beloved, which kinda gives me an image of a doting parent.... I'd like to remind everyone that Breakdown was also the title of a 1998 film starring Kurt Russell, so I don't think it's all that original to be honest. I think she could do better. But a title isn't really that important!! Just look at her first album! She could call this one "This is a load of crap" and we'd all still buy it anyway. Melover wrote: >Breakdown could mean so much more than a negative meaning. And even if the album is a bit negative, it doesn't mean it's depressing!!! I never said that. I just find more meaning in the kind of songs I mentioned above, they don't depress me. I'm a bit of a Foreigner and Journey fan too, and I love all of their negative songs best too. Like "that was yesterday", "a love in vain", "running the risk" and I really like "waiting for a girl" altho that's not really negative. I'd like to hear Melissa sing that one, and I'd like to hear her sing "send her my love" by Journey. Which leads me onto a question.... What song written and performed by another artist would you most like to hear sung by Melissa? MLE indicated that her tour would start in the U.S., so i'm guessing her tour will begin sometime in the September ---> November period. if you live close to Toronto, MLE will be performing at the Fashion Cares AIDS benefit on May 8th. the tickets are $75 (general admission). of course, she'll probably only play one song. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? While in a gas station on the NC/SC border this past weekend, I heard someone singing over the radio. The station wasn't clear, so there was a lot of static, but I thought I recognized the voice. I asked my friend who was singing and she said it was MLE. I thought so too, but I didn't recognize the tune. I went to stand closer to the radio, and was certain that it was MLE. I thought that it might be a new single from the new album. Anyway, I listened as best I could through the static and thought the song was pretty good, from what I could hear. Well, to my surprise, at the end of the song, the DJ said, "that was the Ultraphonics (sp?)". I was amazed. The lead singer sounded so much like MLE. Have any of you heard of this group? Anne Heche starred in the chilling last segment of "Walls 1" (Cher co-starred with her and directed this segment). Part 2 will be about "the lesbian experience in America" (Variety, April 23, 1999). Ellen's segment, in which she will star and executive produce, is entitled "Miss Conception," which will be about a lesbian couple's attempts to conceive a child. Sharon Stone will co-star in the segment with Ellen, and Anne will write and direct the segment. the other two segments have not yet been cast. it will start production late next month, but it will not air on HBO until sometime next year. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
