It was all I could do to hold the Snickers and Crackle as my Butterfinger went up her tight little Kit Kat and she started to scream "Oh Henry, Oh Henry!" Soon she was fondling my Peter Pan and ZagNut and I knew it wouldn't be long before I blew my Milk Duds clear to Mars that gave her a taste of the old Milky Way. She asked me if I was into M&M, but I said, "Hey Chicklet, no kinky stuff." I said "Look you little Reese's Pieces, don't be a Zero, Be a Lifesaver. Why don't you take my Watchamacallit and slip it up your Bit ~O~ Honey?" (What a piece of Juicy Fruit she was too!) She screamed, "Oh Crackerjack, better than the ThreeMusketeers!" As I rammed my Ding Dong up her Rocky Road and into her Peanut Butter Cup. Well, I was giving it to her Good ~N~ Plenty, when all of a sudden... My Starburst! Yeah, as luck would have it, she started to grow Chunky and complained of a Wrigley in her stomach. Sure enough, 9 months later, out popped...... Baby Ruth! ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 10:43:48 -0800 (PST) From: Rhondda Ashby Subject: *etheridge* Army Archerd: MLE to perform at anti-Taliban function http://www.variety.com/archerd/index.asp Army Archerd Just for Variety - - snip - HOLLYWOOD'S WOMEN ARE GIRDING for an all-important war on gender apartheid in Afghanistan. Mavis (Mrs. Jay) Leno is chair of the event, with the co-chairs and committee including numerous concerned femmes in the biz. And it's anticipated they will all be on hand for a photo op to rival that of the "We Are the World" photo. I have the list to date and is it awesome. In case you don't know the reason: the Taliban controlling Afghanistan have stripped women and girls of all human rights, prohibiting them from attending schools, restricting medical attention and forcing all women to wear the burga, a garment shrouding the body leaving only a small mesh covered opening through which to see. They cannot leave their homes unless accompanied by a close male relative. "We are their only help," Mavis Leno told me. She and Jay made an initial contribution of $100,000 to help bring this horrendous condition to the fore and to initiate further action. "We must raise the wattage of visibility," she explained. "Our initial plan is for the event to bring awareness to women in America and to raise the public's general awareness and to bring pressure on politicians." Set to perform at the event is Melissa Etheridge, and Lionel Richie has written a new song. David Foster is setting more talent, Lorraine Sheinberg is producing a video on life in Afghanistan, then and now. Others set to participate include Gillian Anderson, Kathy Bates, Geena Davis, Laura Dern, Sally Field, Diane Ladd, Christine Lahti, Mary Steenburgen, Lily Tomlin, Alfre Woodard, Rene Zelwegger. IMO, with all of the methods which glenna, david, and jen utilize to make the guidelines widely available, there's really no viable reason why these rules are still a mystery, particularly to listers who have been here months or even years. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Patti - -------------- http://nt.excite.com/news/r/990208/17/entertainment-wynette Tennessee Considers Exhuming Tammy Wynette's Body (Last updated 5:21 PM ET February 8) NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - The Nashville-area medical examiner said Monday he would consider exhuming the body of country music star Tammy Wynette for an autopsy almost a year after her doctor declared her dead from a blood clot. Davidson County Medical Examiner Bruce Levy said Wynette's daughters Georgette, Jackie and Tina, and their lawyer "raised several issues" in requesting the autopsy and that he would make a decision in the next day or two. Georgette said she was "very pleased" at Levy's willingness to meet with them and consider their request the body be exhumed and examined. "We have told Dr. Levy things that were not made clear then when she died," the daughters' attorney Dan Warlick said. "Her doctor coming from Pittsburgh to pronounce her dead; well, that's sort of ... a curious situation." On April 6, 1998, Wynette, 55 -- celebrated as the "First Lady of Country Music" for such hits as "Stand By Your Man" -- was found curled up on the couch of her Nashville home by her husband and manager of 20 years, George Richey. Before calling local authorities, Richey reportedly phoned her Pittsburgh physician Wallis Marsh, who flew out immediately and announced the next day that Wynette had died from a blood clot in her lungs. Wynette had endured a number of health problems over the years. No autopsy was performed after her death. Richey's attorney could not be reached for comment. Levy told reporters that he spoke to Marsh at the time, and considering Wynette's medical history, thought that a blood clot was "not an unreasonable diagnosis to make. "But questions have been raised since then about the medications she may have been on," Levy said. "You can well imagine that they are concerned about what happened to their mother," Levy said of Wynette's daughters. "They simply want to know how their mother died and they don't think all the facts have come out." Wynette had been sleeping 16 hours a day in her final days, suffering from depression and the effects of narcotic drugs, her daughters have said. Levy said he would have to review the law on exhumation. RLA: are you planning on playing any new songs at the benefit shows (ALS or anti-Taliban) coming up? MLE: Wow...you are informed. [insert sound of rhondda fainting] ALS has requested that I play "I Take You With Me." Might do a new one at the other benefit. RLA: is the tone of your album closer to ME and Brave & Crazy or YIA/YLS? MLE: It's a little like all of them...and like none of them. RLA: and a question that's been daunting the list for years...in the song "An Unusual Kiss", is there anyone in the taxi while your baby draws the shades? MLE: I'll say that there's someone in the taxi. How's that? a couple of notes post chat... * while MLE stated that there was someone in the taxi, please take into account that i didn't put the quantifier, "besides the taxi driver", into my question. LOL...blame it on nerves, i guess. i did ask it subsequently during the ending free-for-all, but she didn't answer. * bailey (who's 2 tomorrow) came in to play with MLE's computer during *MY* chat time. heh heh... * we had an interesting exchange about the spelling of my name. i'm sure you're shocked about that. ;-) * MLE expressed her frustration about the Seagram/Polygram hoopla. she said something like, "Everyone was fired at Polygram, so there's no one to work with. We are waiting for them to get their S**T together...sorry. I'm going a little crazy about it." yes, she typed "shit" just like "S**T". there were some additional morsels about her album, her band, her tour, the recording of "lullaby", the AOL board etc., but again, i don't want to step on anyone else's toes. oh, and she had veggie tacos for dinner - JC cooked them. so, those of you who were also at the chat...enter stage left. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I couldn't believe it! I hastily clicked OK and reopened the MEIN window, but the waste of time more or less blew my chances for a fourth question. Dang! So I just typed "Thanks" to Melissa. Of *all* times for that #*%&$(%& thing to show up on my screen! Dagnabbit! LOL Oh, well, something to tell the grandkids one day.... And I'm sure joyce will tell you, I wasted no time doing just that! LOL I put a couple questions together and made them one which allowed me to ask her 6 or 7 questions total. I think that's more than anyone else got out. Poor Joyce and that dayam AOL timer! LOL You did great thru it all though. There were some good questions asked by all, but I will let you wait for the transcript for those...don't want to steal anyone else's glory afterall. :-) Anyway, as for the questions I asked and Melissa's answer's... Oh yes...and the question and answer's are verbatim. :-) I, of course, said "Hello Melissa" first. LOL Then immediately asked the following questions: Q: Do you know when your next tour will be, and will it start in the U.S. or in Europe? Also is it true your planning a two year tour? A: First there will be some promotional tours all over the world then a full on tour probably starting in US, it might take two years...that depends on the crowds! - ------------------ Q: Although the Joplin film is a bust, do you have plans to pursue other acting possibilities. And if so, what type of movie would you like to be in....Comedy, Drama...? A: Yes I do...comedies would be fun..but anything that they will have me in I will consider. - ------------------ Q: I hear there is a Woodstock ' 99 being planned for the US and Austrailia, will you be at either? A: I haven't heard anything about it. I had fun in 94 I don't see why not! - ------------------- Q: During your tour will you be performing in large stadiums or small intimate venues? A: I will start out small. - ----------------- When Melissa first popped into the room we had 8 minutes (Melissa came in at 4:57 PM, the chat offically started at 5:05 PM) of free time to chat with her. During that time I asked her if Julie was there with her and she replied "No Julie is making veggie tacos...yum!" For future chats here are some good tips to follow...this is how I got so many questions out so fast...btw Joyce, I know I e-mailed you part of this info before the chat. If you'd used it, it might have saved you some time to work around that fringin' AOL timer. I hate that dayam thing! First, make your list of questions in an e-mail in the order you plan on asking them. Then save it to "send later". Right before the chat, open that e-mail as if to edit it and when your turn comes to chat with Melissa highlight/cut/paste each question to the chat room. It saves tons of typing and typing error time. As soon as that question is posted, you'll have time to retrive your next question before Melissa can answer the first one. So you won't be missing anything. But don't wait to long before you post each question since each person is only allowed 2-3 minutes time to chat directly with her. There you have it! Hope this will help the next lucky group of people to be picked. :-) I won't be picked again till at least August, but if this method is still do-able, I'll use it again. So I called the number and waited on hold for about a hundred years. Gotta love AOL . Anyway, the above statement is partially true. Actually there are *two* timer notices that pop up when you're logged on to AOL. The guy from AOL told me that if you are answering email online or just IM'ing with someone, every 10 minutes you'll get one little window that asks if you wish to stay online since you're "not doing anything." You can avoid this happening if you click on any one of the AOL channels and then answer your mail or whatever within that area of AOL. This way, your computer sends to AOL the message that you ARE doing something and you haven't just left your computer. However, there is a second timer that pops up every 46 minutes or whatever--that big sucker in the upper right hand portion of the screen?--that you can do nothing to disable. That's the one that interrupted the MEIN chat for me. Thanks, anyway! At least we can do something about the first timer! :-) Joyce ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 13:09:30 -0500 From: Deb Subject: *etheridge* comments on the chat >From: Rhondda Ashby >RLA: is the tone of your album closer to ME and Brave & Crazy or >YIA/YLS? > >MLE: It's a little like all of them...and like none of them. However, one day it just stopped working for no apparent reason. >> Where ever it was that you found such a program, I suggest that you may want to return to that particular download site and try downloading and running it again. As for the program disabling itself ... it was probably caused by shareware restrictions or a missing driver; in the 2nd case, this is why it's highly recommended that one maintains their system well; i.e. weekly/bi-weekly hard disk scans and defragmentations! {for those of you using Windows 98, there's a system schedualer for appointed scans and defrags. Windows 95 users, sorry no such luck on such self-maintence goodies!}. Also, another fine tip! When installing any program ... GET A FRESH START! This is how: after program is downloaded, 1} close all opened programs {for those not familiar w/the 'how 2 dos'; while depressing both CTRL and ALT hit Delete once, when CLOSE PROGRAM window appears highlight one program title at a time, then END TASK for each of them}. Repeat this process for each program that's listed EXCEPT for 'explorer' and 'systray'! 2} Run program from the directory that you made its download to. 3} After installation is complete, return back to the directory that the download was ran from and delete its install/setup icon. 4} Then of course, follow up by emptying your recycle bin. If one keeps this habit of good house cleaning up .... it's guaranteed that you'll preserve your hard drive and free up bunches of idle space on it. "Women of the world, unite!" is the rallying cry of Mavis Leno and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. To help the women of Afghanistan out of the cruel constraints of their Taliban rulers, Leno, wife of that stand-up fellow, and Bloodworth-Thomason, producer of hit shows including Designing Women, are putting on a March 29 event in L.A. under the Feminist Majority Foundation banner. Bloodworth-Thomason and hubby Harry Thomason will write, produce and direct. Famous women rallying include Anjelica Huston, Gillian Anderson, Julianna Margulies, Cybill Shepherd, Juliette Lewis, Shannen Doherty, Alfre Woodard and Nancy Sinatra. Dorothy Rodham, mother of Hillary Rodham Clinton, was invited by Bloodworth-Thomason, a close Clinton friend. The first lady plans to be out of the country on that date. Leno told me Wednesday: "The whole point is to send a huge message across the world, using the visibility of these people, that this is an intolerable situation, in the same way there was a great outcry about South Africa's apartheid." Women here have responded strongly because the Afghan women "lived completely contemporary lives before this, holding down serious jobs in the professions. Overnight, they were relegated to the ninth century. Most women who struggled to make it have an instant vision of that happening to them." What happened is that the Taliban extremists cut off all rights for women. They cannot hold jobs or even leave home without a man. Mavis and Jay Leno recently gave $100,000 to the cause. Melissa Etheridge will perform at the event, Lionel Richie has written a song, and letters will be read from Afghan women, responding to a tape by Mavis smuggled into that country by Voice of America. (For information about the event, call 888-939-6636.) I asked Bloodworth-Thomason about a possible Senate run by the first lady. "She hasn't made up her mind yet, I do know that," said the producer. The Thomasons did Clinton campaign work, and "I'd be ready to campaign for her anywhere," said Bloodworth-Thomason. - - snip - News & Views by Jeannie Williams appears Tuesday through Friday. CBS New York Thursday, February 11,1999 - 09:54 AM ET (CBS) Tens of thousands of Americans suffer from Lou Gehrig's disease. Some suffer without much hope. But CBS This Morning Medical Correspondent Dr. Emily Senay has the story of a family that is not giving up. Lou Gehrig's disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. It's a fatal wasting disease that gradually paralyzes the muscles, and for which there is no cure or effective treatment. It is also a rare disease, so research money is hard to come by. But for one sufferer and her family, none of these have been reasons to give up the fight. Jenifer Estess was an active New York theater and film producer when she was diagnosed with ALS two years ago. "I've seen my body go from a healthy young woman of 35 to needing help with everything that I do," Jenifer says. "When you realize this is a fatal illness, when it really sinks in, you have to grow up really quickly and face your mortality...and it's a devastating process." Her doctors told her there was nothing they could do for her. But for Jenifer and her sisters, Valerie and Meredith, nothing wasn't good enough. Valerie remembers: "There's a moment of reckoning you have to get busy, you have to start working, and so we started working." Together the sisters started Project ALS to raise funds and awareness of the disease. With the help of old friends in the film community, ALS is getting plenty of fresh attention. Actors William Baldwin and Gina Gershon are on board, as is New York City's first lady, Donna Hanover. "It obviously became very real to me, and that's why I'm here because we're trying to raise money," says Gina Gershon. William Baldwin also feels strongly: "When celebrity is utilized in a responsible and constructive fashion it can be highly effective. I think in terms of raising awareness, in terms of raising funds, you can reach a much broader audience." It's an audience that is listening. A Project ALS benefit last June raised $500,000. In addition, the Estess sisters have gathered a group of doctors and scientists on the cutting edge of ALS research. According to Valerie, "We set out to assemble the most dynamic team and greatest minds around ALS and I think we've done that. We found that when it comes to ALS there lacks a sense of urgency. If we can infuse this whole research world with a sense of urgency perhaps we can come up with treatments sooner." Their enthusiasm is catching on. There are already plans to expand the number of drugs being tested against the disease. Right now there is only one drug trial under way in humans for ALS. Dr. Robert Brown, a neurologist, says: "There really aren't that many patients and the big drug companies are reluctant to put millions of dollars into the research because the return in the market is not going to be high." But for Jenifer Estess, even the smallest advance in the treatment or understanding of the disease would be worth her effort. She explains, "I want to change the course of this disease. It's been here for 160 years and I want to say that we made a difference. No matter what happens I want to say that we made a difference." Jenifer and her sisters have devoted all of their time to the project. The difference they make remains to be seen, but they are not doing badly so far. Their goal is to double their $500,000 fundraising effort this year. Kicking off their effort is another star-studded fundraiser in Los Angeles Thrsday night, featuring performances by Melissa Etheridge and Randy Newman, and appearances by a host of stars. ET is a syndicated show, so its airing time and broadcast channels vary throughout the country (check your local listings), but for those who are in the SF Bay Area, ET airs on our NBC affiliate (channel 4) from 7:30-8 pm. however, lady luck smiled upon me, and i *did* catch a shot of MLE singing at the benefit during this morning's "CBS: This Morning" show by pure accident. i don't even watch the show usually since i'm a "Today" show fan, but our CBS affiliate provides better traffic scrawls at the bottom of their screen than NBC does, so when i flipped channels to monitor the traffic at around 7:25 am, i caught a teaser segment about the benefit, which they indicated they would cover during mark mcewen's "Entertainment News" in the subsequent half hour. so, i quickly took a shower and ran back to the TV. correspondent eleanor mondale was covering the benefit, and there were several silent shots of various actors at the event: marisa tomei, william h. macy, gina gershon, greg kinnear, dylan mcdermott (swoon), kristen johnston, and gil bellows. they also showed short interviews with other actors: ben stiller, ken olin, brooke shields, camryn manheim, and helen hunt. finally, they then showed a clip of MLE singing ITYWM, just as she told me during the MEIN chat , and a short interview snippet. first, eleanor mondale introduced MLE and said, "Pop star, Melissa Etheridge, was happy to lend her voice to the cause." (shot of MLE singing ITYWM which slowly changed to an interview segment with her) MLE: "It's a positive song. It's a song about, um, even though you're losing someone, you take a piece of them with you, and you go on into the world with them. I hope, I hope that, you know, it touches hearts." the segment finished with another shot of her singing ITYWM. CBS' mark mcewen said that he was a big fan of the "young melissa etheridge." anyway, i'd like to urge everyone to watch all of today's entertainment news shows that you can squeeze into your busy schedules. some shows are repeated more than once a day so you'll get more than one opportunity to catch them, while others are only shown once. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I checked the Lifetime site today, too, and the above is indeed what it says....I also ran a search on Melissa Etheridge and got no hits. Originally Gary at Ken Erlich Productions (which made Melissa's Intimate Portrait for Lifetime Television) told me on the phone that the show was slated to air in March. I do know the show is all done (they completed it in December), so it could be that Lifetime is pushing the air date up (which suits me just fine ). In any event, once someone sees a post on the Lifetime site about it, or once someone sees a spot for the show that actually names an airdate and time, PLEASE DO POST the info here! I know I want to set my VCR! (Actually, I'll let Lynn set the darn thing since whenever I do, I end up taping something like basketball which is on an entirely different channel than the one I wanted....LOL) Joyce ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 11:46:08 -0800 (PST) From: Rhondda Ashby Subject: *etheridge* (SMLEC) LA Times: The Next Best Thing to a Real Soul Mate http://www.latimes.com/sbin/iawrapper?NS-search-set=/36c87/aaaa0033Jc8794f&NS-doc-offset=0&NS-adv-search=1& Sunday, February 14, 1999 Web Watch The Next Best Thing to a Real Soul Mate By ROY RIVENBURG It's not too late to find the perfect Valentine's date. Just steer your computer to http://www.mrshowbiz.go.com and play the Celebrity Love Match game, which selects the stars you're most compatible with for love, lust or friendship. Type in your astrological sign, then fill out a wish list for the age and attributes you desire in a celebrity mate. Click a button and - -- presto -- the computer Cupid conjures up a list of partners. We wondered if John Hinckley Jr. would match with Jodie Foster, but since we don't know his sign, we instead asked for a hazel-eyed, salt-and-pepper-haired female, age 18 to 30, suitable for a Scorpio male. The computer came up with Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Queen Latifah. When we tried other sets of parameters, the computer coughed up a list of fantasy marriage partners that included Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry and -- we're not sure what to make of this -- Melissa Etheridge and Anne Heche. The possibilities are boundless. But the Web site carries one caveat: "Celebrity Love Match is to be used for entertainment purposes only. No one wants to see you get slapped with a restraining order." Copyright 1999 Los Angeles Times. All Rights Reserved _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Anyway, while I was carrying on with Jackie (yes, rotten me, I know, I know...and believe me, the Universe did get even with me later on), *another* woman made a play for Jackie. Flash forward to about a year ago....around Christmastime I was having a conversation with Jackie. I asked her if she ever saw or heard from Frances. I apologize to the U.S. members, this should not have even happened, my faith in MEIN is as but as much as I have in the Catholic Church ( & I'll answer every private e-mail over that one) the cost over here is £8.99 ( that's about $13) & believe me that's a hell of a good offer, whilst I enter every possible MEIN chat I have to admit in as much as I have a load of MLE related questions the first ( should I be fortunate enough) will be to ask MLE does she know her Euro Branch is a disaster ? Dr. Chuck posted a query about this CD back on 11/29/98: > So I'm poking around some Joan Armatrading sites, and I find that > she's compiling and album called (I think) Lullabies with a > Difference (all the proceeds go to help children with cerebral > palsy). btw, i did a bit of poking around on my own and discovered some additional information about how to order the CD through Paces, which is the charitable organization that benefits from sales of the CD. their price is 9.99 (British pound) + 1.50 (British pound, postage and packing. unfortunately, they can only do orders for those from the UK. however, this URL, http://www.paces.org.uk/html/lullabies.html, provides a great close-up of MLE's misspelled name. that's reason enough to buy the disk, IMO. i found an even *bigger* picture of the CD booklet at a brian may fan site. check out http://www.btinternet.com/~may.be/brian/lullabies/myboycvr.jpg, and you'll notice a blurry blurb about "A Truthful Lullaby." it looks like it says "produced by melissa etheridge and john shanks." hmm... ;-) for those of us in the U.S., harmony ridge music is selling the CD for $24.99 (+ shipping/handling). they accept visa, MC, personal check, and money orders. they also handle orders outside the U.S., but considering the other vendors which satsanga has already provided, i'd say it's cheaper to order through them. go to this URL: http://www.hrmusic.com/artists/jaart.html, and scroll down to the appropriate link to order it online. as an alternative, the Paces website indicates that the disk is available at HMV and Virgin in the UK. i hope that this is true for the U.S. and canada, as well. *rhondda* _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Snapped it up without much question. In case anyone is interested, some of the credits are: produced by Craig Krampf, Kevin McCormick, Melissa Etheridge, and Nicko Bolas; arranged by ME, Craig Krampf, and Kevin M.; other credits say Craig Krampf on drums; any one know anything else about Craig Krampf? I have never seen his name before. Also something else I found interesting...Melissa says, "I would like to give special thanks to Chris Blackwell and Bill Leopold. I find it amazing when I think about it that I'm still here after all these years, despite the lack of commitment by certain parties to fans outside the US. I first heard of MEIN (Australia) in the mid-90s and applied for membership to the address printed on the (Australian) cover of whichever album was released with the info (Never Enough? Margo, are you listening....would you know anything about this?). Anyways, I wrote, faxed and attempted to phone and even called the local distributor at the time, but to no avail. No answer to my request for more info, no nuthin'. At the time, I was a *real fan* (tm) and would have happily forked out hard earned $ for stuff through MEIN. And before you all say, well join MEIN (America), that's fine, except the exchange rate between Australia and the US is not good (about 63 cents to the US dollar on a good day), so merchandise plus postage means that you can pay a ridiculous amount of money for a T-shirt, let alone mouse pad, cap, key ring or any of the other smaller items. And I wanted info, general info about Melissa as well as stuff about promotion of Melissa in Australia, tours, media etc. But there isn't any (promotion), so I suppose why bother to have a fan club in a country you don't care about. (yeah you're right, I AM bitter ....) But since I never got a reply, since no one (record company included) seemed to know what was going on (with MEIN), since we never hear Melissa on the radio because she's not promoted here, since she has only toured here twice (three times if you count supporting the Eagles) in 10 years, since we are at the arse end of the world and get treated like that by record companies, tour promoters, and ultimately the artists themselves, I basically will have some passing interest in Melissa's next album (if and when it gets released here), but that's about it...a passing interest. It's all a bit sad and ironic really, as it was Australia that Melissa first made chart/radio play impact... which helped pave the way for her US and European exposure, success, fame, stardom, royalties and ... fans. Melissa's performances here have given me some fantastic memories, one or two of those performances could have been described as "electrifying", but over the years, the magic fades, as the memories do ..... Other younger, more committed artists have seen the (literal and figurative) value in the Australian market (Ani DiFranco has toured here twice in less than 12 months for example) and call me fickle, but nowadays I am much more likely to spend my money on tickets to live concerts here in Melbourne and Ani's back catalogue than pay exorbitant exchange rates for a lullaby that Melissa recorded on some compilation album that's available in the UK, even if I could track down where to purchase it from. I suppose what I am saying here, to anyone who is interested, is that Melissa's appeal outside the US, well, here in Australia particularly, may have waned to almost sheer indifference (if my reaction is any to judge by). What a pity, when it could have been so different had Melissa not succumbed to the tyranny of distance and put Australia in the too far away and too hard basket. Jenifer Estess, who was stricken with Lou Gehrig's disease less than two years ago, knows because they showed up in force recently for her new charity, Project A.L.S., which sponsored L.A.'s biggest benefit ever to find answers for the crippling, fatal illness. Raleigh Studios was alive with the sound of stars like Kristen Johnson, Ben Stiller, Rob Morrow, Marisa Tomei, William H. Macy, Steven Weber, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear, Janeane Garofalo, Brooke Shields, Courteney Cox, Melissa Etheridge and Randy Newman. They turned out at the behest of the 37-year-old Estess, a former publicist and theater-film producer. "When I became ill and realized there were no treatments, my sisters and I decided we would create a passion around this disease," Estess told us. Larry Winokur, Estess' friend and former employer, says she has inspired Hollywood to rally around a cause that never had many proponents. And Estess knew what she was up against. Before she was stricken, she helped promote the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. as a publicist at Baker, Winokur, Ryder. "Finally there's a touchstone, Jenifer, that young, influential people can gather around," Winokur said. "She knows that before the disease robs her of all her neuromuscular abilities, she's going to pull out the stops and try to leave as her legacy a heightened awareness." Hey y'all! My best friend & oldest sister Eileen is retiring today! I'm so proud of her!!! And I'm elated that she has been so fortunate to be in a situation that makes retirement possible at a mere and terrifically young 51 :) She has been Product Lead for Word at Microsoft for most of her 7+ years there, and she has worked her buns off for them! That hard work and dedication has paid off in stock options over the years, and she's taking her moment now :) Her colleagues have honored her this week with an aMAZing party -- as well as daily acknowledgements, wonderful thoughtful gifts of affection and gratitude, and expressions of their respect and admiration for her incredible work ethic, her will- *sorely* -be-missed- *immense* -knowledge, her respect for others, and her compassion and giving spirit to those around her. Her manager shared with me how *truly* happy everyone is for E -- as he is as well, of course -- but also what "a HUGE loss...just a HUGE loss" the close of her contribution will mean to the company and her team, what a daily inspiration E has been to her coworkers -- a true mentor to so many in so many ways -- and how much she will be truly missed by all. There is another party later today and I'm looking forward to being there as well :) MS has done some unprecedented things for Eileen as she departs....I can really appreciate that they feel such a huge loss, especially after getting to know many of her coworkers over the years. She's so modest about her accomplishments, but IMHO (ok, I'm a bit biased ), she deserves ALL of this and more! :) A new dawn in the life of my closest family member and best friend :) I'm so happy that she was able to join Microsoft when she did, and now after giving them her best and beyond she is able to walk away and begin a new and different phase of living Life (Wow, she doesn't have to *work* anymore!!) I'm so proud of her, just had to share! :) :) :) Patti, quoting a quote E quoted to me in a letter 15 years ago at a time and place in her life where I am today....I shall indeed be fortunate if I ever arrive at a time and place in my life where she is today :) "Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel" -- Wm Shakespeare, Hamlet ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@esosoft.com with: "unsubscribe etheridge" if you are on the bounce format "unsubscribe etheridge-digest" if you are on the digest format Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 14:49:04 EST From: Gwen5gwen@aol.com Subject: *etheridge* Two I's, but not in the back of my head Whoops, I goofed.... ATL is very different from anything Melissa has ever done, her voice is more gentle than even heard in ATWTH not to mention TLG (apologies to those that aren't into acronyms ) Whilst it has a very "commercial" sound to it, (all that means is that I thought if this was a single release I know a lot of Stations that may never pick up her music would play this song.) Without wanting to sound condescending, it's short & sweet, true to the chords depicted in the Advocate, Satsanga was good (& computer-talented enough) to let you hear an MP3 ( whatever the hell that is) I don't know how much you got to hear but I defy any of you that hear it to stifle the urge not to break into The Beatles "Here comes the sun" at the pre chorus chord bridge ............ for those who like stats .....it was recorded at Sunset sound Recorders in Holywood April 17 1998, with Patrick Warren on keyboards, Romi Jaffe on portasound drums & Jim Keltner on drums, Not that I'd ever be one to assume the listening tastes of all on the Lists, I'd probably recommend this cd so much you'd think I'd have shares in it's sale ( which I don't !!) Brittany Murphy, best known as the voice of Luann on King of the Hill and Alicia Silverstone's madeover friend in Clueless, has landed the lead role of the late rocker in Piece of My Heart, report the Hollywood trades. The flick, which will be directed by Gary Fleder (Kiss the Girls), has been in development hell for three years at Lakeshore Entertainment, and at one point Melissa Etheridge was attached to star. (Another Joplin film, with director Nancy Savoca and actress Lili Taylor onboard, is reportedly dead in the water.) Piece will track Joplin from her beginnings in a small Texas town to her ascension as a '60s rock and roll goddess to her death in 1970 of a heroin overdose at the age of 27. Murphy will reportedly sing some, and possibly all, of the Joplin tunes in the $35 million film, which is set to begin shooting in Texas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in late summer. - - snip - _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Good point, Kay....I can remember (wayyyy back when ) being preT-Ty leery of the ATM. Of course, those days are long gone now....along with a *lot* of cash quite 'securely' dispensed though not necessarily wisely spent...but I digress. ;) As an added component of comfort for any webconsumers who might be looking askance at net.purchases, if you're using Netscape (which I do at home), the 'key' symbol in the lower left corner will turn from a 'broken' key to a 'solid' key when connected to a secure site. I use Internet Explorer at work, but I don't recall off hand what its 'secure site' symbol is. I've heard a lot of people these days expressing concern about giving out credit card information on the web, and IMHO it is no more and no less secure than making a credit card purchase over the telephone....after all, you never know who might be listening in on such transactions...and the bottom line is that most credit card companies are quite reasonable and even efficient when erroneous charges appear on customer accounts, and that's what really matters in the end. I do recall one occasion when I went to Vegas with some friends and coming home to find a letter in the mail soon after from my bank stating that there was an 'unusual volume' of activity with my account beyond my 'normal account activity' spanning a 3-day period and they just wanted to bring it to my attention. We had a good laugh...How very thoughtful... ;) Patti ****************************************************************** To unsubscribe, use the form at: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/etheridge.html Official list web site: http://www.esosoft.com/etheridge/ NOTE THE NEW URL -- PLEASE UPDATE ANY LINKS ****************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 22:04:12 EST From: MELOVER31@aol.com Subject: Re: *etheridge* Lullaby Can someone please help me?? According to the "Hollywood Reporter," actress Brittany Murphy (who played Alicia Silverstone's geeky friend Tai in the movie "Clueless") has been cast to play Joplin in "Piece of My Heart" from Lakeshore Entertainment and Paramount Pictures. This film is not the authorized version proposed by Joplin's family. That script, based on Joplin's sister's book "Love, Janis," was slated to star Lili Taylor, but Tri-Star has since put the project in turnaround. Melissa Etheridge and Emily Watson of "Hilary and Jackie" were among others considered to play the singer, who died at age 27 of a heroin overdose. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
