Subject: *etheridge* Hear Angels Would Fall in Real Audio
Hi all.
Chuck was nice enough to convert my MP3 of Melissa's first acoustic
performance of Angels Would Fall. He has it as real audio on his
site:
http://drchuck.net/melissa/angels.ram
Keep in mind, it was recorded at the PLJ summer thing and there were
thousands of people there. There is background talking, etc.
But at least those who haven't been able to hear it yet can do so.
I also left a little of the chatting before and after in there.
Happy Listening!
Darlene

Subject: RE: *etheridge* NMEC: A&E's IR message board
I really appreciate the interest -- public and private -- among MElisters in
the caliber of some of those who oppose gays & lesbians in the US. I've
been really touched by the mail I've gotten from folks here expressing shock
and dismay and wanting to know how to do more to protect our basic -- not
special -- human rights as citizens.
As Sue so aptly put it, "...it's not a PRIDE issue, it's
a personal safety issue."
I, too, was blown away when I finally went by A&E's website and *read* what
was there! I personally think some of them were the same person posting
under different aliases, but the volume of different writing styles with the
same sort of message was also pretty amazing. I think that all those of us
in the gay & lesbian community really want is just to live our lives and not
have to worry about our personal safety on any front...whether it's jobs,
family, friends, religious and community activities, or other people we
know. It's not something "special" we're asking for...but something really
fundamental and basic. I want my legislators to know that there ARE people
out there who quiTe firmly believe that being gay is a lone and ample
"reason" to single us out for violence and harrassment.
Interestingly, there was a post from a complete homophobe that I read and
took note, since his argument was really MY argument....I'll paraphrase here
and leave out the extreme vulgarities of his post, but his message was
"Sometimes a person just has to let off steam, and since we can't really go
after racial minorities because we'll end up in court and maybe jail, it's
better to find a gay person and let off your steam since that's not against
the law." I certainly won't repeat his vulgarities here, but it really came
home to me that if it were *against the law* (forget any higher or
'universal' moral standard) to commit acts of violation or violence against
gays and lesbians, then maybe this bozo wouldn't even try. It made me think
about what kind of person he might have been in the 50's or 60's....but
later, the times have changed, and he "knows better" than to 'let off steam'
against a person who is not his own race. It doesn't really matter WHY he
doesn't "go after" other races, the point is that a law was there and he
suddenly does not even think of it as a realistic possibility for *himself*!
It seems to me that laws prohibiting violence against gays & lesbians would
definitely reach a *significant* portion of that "fringe" out there who
function on a purely legal moral plane. It didn't come home to me until I
read that post, but the laws now well-established that make crimes motivated
by racism stand out from other crimes is the only *real* message that a lot
of the "I don't know any better" folks who cling to that attitude of
"entitlement" could relate to. If their *own* liberty were at stake in
acting out their need for power and control over others in order to make
them feel better about themselves, then perhaps they'd think twice...and
thrice...about 'letting off steam' against a gay or lesbian person.
The bottom line for me is that we don't seek "special" rights...but we ARE a
group that is *specifically targeted* to experience violation of basic human
rights in the US. That, in itself, ought to be reason enough for inclusion
in anti-hate-crimes legislation for protection. And I'm elated that so many
want their legislators to see just what's really out there....I hope it
scares the *sh*t* out of 'em when they even *think* about casting their
votes in a way that would "justifty" this fringe.
I'm really happy to help those who've emailed me wanting to know how to do
more and to get more involved. It's a big challenge to change such an
entrenched attitude and way of thinking for so many. And that same attitude
presents itself in so many ways -- as domestic violence, child abuse, sexual
abuse, murder, and even vandalism....it's all the same attitude, "it's my
RIGHT and it doesn't matter how YOU feel about it." The same attitude hits
more than just the gay community, it's everywhere. It's there because some
people haven't ever really touched their real and human emotions, they can't
connect with their own feelings, muchless relate to how others might
feel...what we certainly don't hear is "I had no right." I'm really happy
to help folks in any meager way that I can who are popping up for more
information about how to meet such a daunting challenge :) To those who've
written privately, I've offered the resources that I rely upon, but I'm sure
there are others....your community needs your passion and your willingness
to invest of yourself! :) Again, many thanks for your interest in not being
silent!

Hi, I am trying to find the lyrics to "The War is Over" from YLS. I am
writing an interpretation of "The War is Over" and EOM for a class that I
have. I need to turn in a copy of the lyrics along with the paper.
Unfortunately this is due tomorrow so the sooner the better.
Thanks

Morning Everyone,
First I am happy to say that I have posted ANGELS WOULD FALL IN IT'S
ENTIRETY on the WPLJ Page. I am hosting thanks to Darlene. :-)
Also I have a question to ask before everyone rushes off to hear the song.
I wanted to ask how many people have checked out the MTV VIDEO of Melissa
that I have put at the "Melissa on Video" page? The reason that I ask is
because it takes about 5 min. to download and there is no way that I know
of to lessen that time. The only good thing that I can say is that once it
downloads you can click refresh and it will repeat right away.
Anyway, some feedback would be great. Do you think I should leave it or
take it off the site due to the download time?
Thanks
Eddie

One thing for sure is that you will want to get the title of the song correct
in your paper. It's "This War Is Over." The CD has the lyrics in the CD
booklet, but here they are as it seems you have misplaced yours:
This War Is Over
Take off my shield
Carry my sword
I won't need it anymore
Find me a sky
Give me my wings
Frozen and broken but free
Tell them I'm all right
I'm coming home
Tell them I'm all right
I am alone
This war is over
I'm coming home
Take off my shame
Bury it low
I won't need it anymore
Find me the sun
Give me it whole
Melt all the chains in my soul
Tell them I'm all right
I'm coming home
Tell them I'm all right
I am alone
This war is over
I'm coming home
Take off my pain
Carry me slow
I won't fight here anymore
Tell them I'm all right
I'm coming home
Tell them I'm all right
I am alone
This war is over
I'm coming home
Good luck with your paper.
Joyce

Not all soul music is of the Aretha variety.
There's also the kind you hear from James
Taylor, Tracy Chapman, Jackson Browne,
Nina Simone, and Lucinda Williams.
That's what John Joseph Nolis offers in
words and music that heal the spirit and
remind us that hope, trust, and love are
possible. This CD features ten tender
songs, half self-written, the others quite
original interpretations of tunes by Tom
Waits, Gretchen Peters, Melissa

Does anyone know this guy?
That's it.

There were several messages on this site which highlighted the point that
these "people" must have someone as a scapegoat. All they do, and this is
true of the world in general, not just America, is take out their own
frustrations, fears, inadequecies, on minorities. Jews, blacks, gays, etc.
We can never hit Utopia for such factions because they will always want
someone to blame. When we think we've hit Utopia then watch out
brown-haired people, green-eyed people, people with birth marks, whatever.
A further point made in one message was, that the bible, or any other
document for that matter, can always be selectively read. We can cherry
pick the bits we like and ignore the ones such as "love thy neighbour"
when we choose. Personally I can't see why anybody would want to believe a
document written thousands of years ago by people (usually - always? men)
who claimed this to be the word of God. Today's equivalents have problems
with Darwin's evolution theory. While most us rightly question such
theories or bits of it - and it's important that we do - it is only a
theory after all. These so-called religious people reject it outright. Yet
they continue to take literally something which was written in an ancient
language which nobody but a handful of academics can understand, and nobody
but a handful of people have translanted. On this list we all know the
problems which arise for our friends for whom english is not the first
language. We only have to read a technical manual to understand the
problems that arise through translation. Someone recently sent me a piece
called "How not to market products". It was a list of companies who had
literally translated marketing phrases to produce things like the
following:
Frank Perdue's chicken slogan, "It takes a strong man to make a tender
chicken" was translated into Spanish as "it takes an aroused man to make a
chicken
affectionate". At least we something about Darwin. At least we know he had
a modicum of intelligence. What do we know about the people who wrote the
bible? What do we know about the people who translated it?
